PREGAME: Rd 04 vs Gold Coast

Featured Replies

The Demons are back at the MCG for the second week in a row. They face the Suns off a 15 day break without their prized recruit and former Demon champion Christian Petracca. This will be a massive test for the Demons who will be facing a genuine Premiership contender. Who comes in and who goes out?

CJ out for Rivers probably the only change

It will be this unless there's an injury

What about heath for jiath? Gawn has witts next week & heath can help, leave jvr in the forward line & petty down back.

Time to bring in a Ruckman off the bench ,there was a situation on the AFL section in the pocket I think in 1 st Q Carlton player went up on his own at a throw in .Max cannot ruck on his own all the time for God ,s sake his doing well for his age ,love to see him with another flag and 300 games ,but it ain,t going to happen unless we have proper ruck player coming off the bench .

Out: CJ (injured)
In: AMW

The temptation is there to bring back Rivers and move him to half back to cover CJ, but if plan is to play him in the middle then let him earn his way back via Casey playing in the middle.

From Dannyz' post and King's comments it seems that Riv has been carrying something for a while, not sure he'll be back next week.

Hard to earn your way back via Casey when they have yet another bloody bye.

Though I guess when Tasmania joins we had better get used to byes at inconvenient times

Wouldn’t mind seeing XT be considered as the Jiath replacement as a more like for like option

No need to rush the kid

AMW for CJ reckon….Suns will be without Petracca, Humphrey and probably Rowell so not a bad time to get them

Latrelle seemed to have a problem with his knee and wasn't moving too well, so wouldn't be surprised if he was rested.

Gold coast have 4 players over 200cm so would be an ideal game to give Heath a run. Would make Mac Andrew more accountable.

Obviously CJ is out with either Rivers or AMW as a replacement.

Petty has to play to counter Kings height.

Latrell looked pretty fine post that knock. I actually thought he showed a fair bit of why he went at 12. He’s going to be a very very good footballer imo.

he's not getting a huge amount of football at the moment but his presence around the contest has been very impressibve imo

he's 'buzzy' for want of a better term

similarly, jvr didn't hit the scoreboard again but his presence hitting packs and using his hands to bring others into the game was very good

i'll say...

OUT: cj [calf]
IN: rivers

We're not dropping Petty, not against Gold Coast and not, at the absolute least, until Turner's fit again.

May well just be finding a replacement for CJ - could be Rivers, but not sure what he learns about himself without a run at Casey. Could be AMW, but he may need another week at Casey.

I feel we're a touch too short and Gold Coast may exploit that. Not sure if we're going to change the forward line dynamic to get Heath in (or, later on, Kentfield) nor how we'd do it (might be Cross who makes way).

I still think Heath should be on the bench.

Rest Max in the forward pocket.

The defence needs shoring up.

petty needs to find some form.

It would be good if the passes hit JVR on the chest more frequently.

We can't give the Gold Coast a six or seven goal start.

The feel good win probably saves LPickett this week, possibly also the fact that there’s nobody banging the door down at Casey yet to take his role.

For those calling for Petty to be dropped, we have no-one to replace him with. Even if you'd like to see it, we simply don't have the key position depth to cover him. Further, if you liked Lever's game today, good luck seeing that without Petty there.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
