Steele - 183 Total at an average of 8.7 per game
Viney - 122 Total at an average of 6.8 per game

Over their careers, Steele averages about 1.3 more tackles per game (7.27) v Viney (5.89).

    Quite an indictment for North where despite all their top end midfielders their ruckman is leading this category. Might help explain their lack of progress.

    But also 0.5 clearance and one less contested possession. Easier to rack up more tackles when Oliver and Tracc aren't winning the clearances from the other side too.

    Steele's a good tackler though, but he's going to need a big revitalization and change of health luck to make any impact for us. He was completely shot last year.

    Some say Steele is too much sameness of Viney, but honestly I think having them both in the same side is going to be an asset to us. Think their leadership will inspire others around them as well.

    As much as we want to play a free flowing attacking game when we move it forward, the counterbalance has got to be that we don't loose that hard defensive side when the opposition have the ball as well.

    That list does also go to show what an absolute beast Matt Rowell is as well. Dion Prestia has the nickname "The Human Meatball", but I really think it is one that more rightly belongs to Rowell.

    I am still a bit surprised that we were able to pick up a player of Jack Steele’s calibre so late in the trade period, he looks like he will fit right in and his stats back this up. Two time AA as well, he and JV provide that hard edge and leadership that will Instill confidence and encourage our new group of mids to aspire to.

    Agree. He is the second best tackler in the league according to this list. His defensive pressure alone will make him invaluable, let alone his leadership and experience.

    This best tackler list appears to be based on quantity of tackles. For a better understanding, don’t we need something about quality of tackle? Eg, free kicks won through tackling, or turnovers created through tackling?

    I agree to a point and I'll openly say I'm not as negative as some about the potential role that Steele will play for us. But I would say I think we're in big trouble if Viney is still in our weekly best 23 at the end of this season.

    Wonder if there’s a stat for tackles resulting in free kicks for? Curious on where our team sits there. I’d guess on the lower side.

    I’d agree with this in the past, but Vineys intensity has faded the past few years IMO. Probably a combination of age and having kids. There was a time in the mid-late 2010s where he would’ve been the best tackler in the league.

    • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

      Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
