Has King applied and not been successful for any other senior AFL coaching roles?

He had a health scare when going for the WCE job and pulled out. Was the leader at the time as well

Can anyone share what he's like dealing with the media? I think Goodwins lack of spark with the media made him, and the club, a perceived easy target. It's obviously not the most important qualification, but a strong media performer can definetly keep the Fugazi noise down.

I like that we've gone with an assistant who's served a long apprenticeship

Was tipped for the West Coast job before McQualter got it I think.

I think he pulled out of the West Coast job along with a few others

I have no in depth knowledge of the world of assistant coaches but he seems to hsve good credentials and congrats on the Dees for going with a novice senior coach. Looking forward to seeing what style of play the Dees will have in 2026 👍

PS - I reckon Buckley is Tasmania bound.

How long is the coach honeymoon these days?

The best thing about the tall former ruckman Steven King's appointment is that when he holds the Premiership Cup aloft with Max next year, it won't be all lopsided like it was with Goody.

A nice start from hiim:

“Melbourne has a rich history, and I feel very humbled to be given this opportunity at one of the oldest professional sporting clubs in the world,” King said. “I can’t wait to meet the playing group, my fellow coaches, the staff, and the Demon faithful, and start building towards 2026.”

Feel bad for Kelly, he was a close second. He had told his sister he really felt he nailed it but King was always the problem with more experience.

Had a 2-5 record at the Suns as caretaker.

Gerard Healy has been raving about his credentials for a good 2 years now (and I always tuned out as to the reason why).

Not critical of the decision, but I find it a bit odd that he'll still be coaching Geelong, but good luck to him in his flag endeavours with the Cats. Don't we need a coach hands on deck to sort out list management?

I like the fresh approach. Pretty good track record - Premiership player and apprenticeship at successful clubs

So glad I don’t have to go deep into my soul and ask myself if I love Melbourne or despise Buckey more.

Is King the right guy?

From the mfc articke:

In a decorated on-field career, King played 240 AFL games across a 15-year stint at both Geelong and St Kilda. He captained the Cats for four seasons, achieving the ultimate success in 2007 as part of the premiership team.

He switched to the Saints ahead of the 2008 season, playing in three campaigns for St Kilda before calling time on his playing days in 2010.

Following his retirement, King quickly shifted to coaching, remaining at the Saints for two seasons before heading to Whitten Oval to join the Western Bulldogs.

He tasted further success across a 10-season stretch at the Dogs, part of the coaching panel to deliver the 2016 premiership win and 2021 Grand Final appearance.

King took a senior assistant coaching role at the Gold Coast SUNS in 2022, where he was also appointed caretaker coach for seven matches at the back end of 2023.

He then returned to the club he called home in Geelong, working with the midfield for the past two seasons.

King will continue in this role for the remainder of Geelong’s AFL Finals campaign, officially joining the red and blue at its conclusion.

3 seasons playing at the saints I totally don't remember this at all

Haha wonder what Whitey thinks.

I'm happy we've got someone from Geelong and King has more experience than James Kelly.

Does this mean Jimmy Bartel comes in as faux head of footy in this position above Richo?

Gutsy call from the club

Didn’t bend to the will of Buckley

Recently, senior assistants have made the biggest impact

Bring on 2026!

Bring some Geelong IP Please!

Very disappointed - don’t think King is better than Buckley but time will tell. AFL got what they wanted.

Gonna be awkward when he has to explain to Kalani why he kung fu kicked his dad in the face 20 years ago

Might motivate kalani to kick a few goals or the coach will break out the cobra Kai discipline

Im just glad the club didn't fall for that dweeb James Kelly.

Arrogant little sod.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
