There was a startling difference between the last two games and this game

The intensity was there from both clubs, but the protection wasn't.

Max was back to being constantly being scragged before the arrival of the ball. The forward line was constantly being obstructed going for the ball.

The disgusting maggots in the middle were entirely different to the first qtr of the last two weeks.

We are not Collingwood, Hawthorn or Geelong so not happening sadly. Would be nice to get looked after like those three do.

Cheer up. team! We are leading the competition in one vital area. And we know the MFC considers it vital because the team does it so well. Yes, we are leading the competition in kicking points. We have kicked 154 points this year, more than any other team, and one more than the Filth - and they are on top of the ladder! How good are we????

So 15 minutes into the game you could tell we were ‘OFF’.

Why the F can’t they turn it back ‘ON’. Can’t somebody in the group stand up and say ‘follow me’ when that ‘OFF’ day seems so apparent?

Letting 6 first quarter goals in is not good enough. The white flag seems to come up pretty quick.

Not giving an out… Just a reason. I believe I said we should have won.

I’m just one to look at the big picture and not feed off my emotions.

I’m not one to kick the team, especially when they’re down. It’s not like they don’t want to win or aren’t trying.

Wanting to win and doing what you need to do to win as a professional athlete are two completely different things. Did they want to win? Of course. Did they want to work their arses off to make sure of it? It's pretty obvious they didn't.

Losing I can handle, especially if the other team brings the heat. Last week Sydney brought the heat early and we rolled over them due ot our hard work. This week our pressure rating was 130 something. One of our lowest ever under Goodwin apparently and the last quarter was the worst quarter for pressure under Goodwin (the kayo commentators said). That is inexcusable and shows me the players thought they'd turn up and get the win without having to bust a gut.

Yes, that makes the head-to-head score, Goodwin v Lyon 4 - 2 in Goodwin's favour... Your point?

Not to speak for someone else but I think the overall head to head is irrelevant. Lyon got Goody cold today.

The players weren’t up for it and we didn’t do much/anything to respond to Lyon’s plan.

To look at the result as anything other than a spanking across the board is doing the Saints and their coaches a disservice.

Sounds like we agree with each other. Except your last bit.

For the love of god will someone quote the expected score so we can bank the expected imaginary 4 points and move on

With the expected score being 82.7 v 81.8 in our favour, inside 50’s 57 to 40 and marks inside 50 14 to 10 in our favour, this tells me we are not getting the ball to the right places inside 50.

I think it is more a case of us regularly getting the ball into a very, very congested F50.

No only does it make it much more difficult to get quality possessions/ shots at goal, we get burnt on the counter attack when the opposition win the ball and transition it into an open forward line.

While we’re focused on just getting the ball into F50, the better clubs/coaches are happy to set us up for this eventuality.

Footballs version of “Rope-a-Dope”.

Mate, you don't mess about with loading when you've started 0-5. There is no room for it. You have to beat teams like St Kilda, however much effort it takes, even if it means you're less of a chance vs Collingwood (a game you're 95% going to lose) the next week.

Completely agree.

I’m probably going to do him a disservice here by tagging him and potentially misquoting him (apologies in advance) but IIRC @binman ’s theory for why we were a strong chance to lose today (he was proven right) included that we would be loading and training to be “cherry ripe” for next week, potentially to this week’s disadvantage.

If that’s indeed what we’re doing, it’s madness. At 5-6, with the draw we have, we should be doing everything to win the games we have left against the weaker sides, today being one of those wins. Prioritising fitness for KB or some other period in July or August is useless when you start 0-5.

Who knows if this is what actually happened of course. But record low pressure levels and a stack of players barely touching it compared to their usual output (Langdon had just 13 touches! Clarry 16, Rivers 14, Salem 14, Langford 10) maybe suggests something was up. Maybe.

Bs. We have been losing games like this for 7 years

2nd semi v Carlton in 2023. 9 goals 17b

We never learn but you'll always find an excuse

Correct - but it’s being mentally strong enough to execute basic goal kicking skills under pressure.

Professional footballers can kick goals from 30m out. That they miss over and over again, and do so not just in an outlier performance, but on regular occasions, including two games this year that we’ve lost due to poor goal kicking, is pretty clear evidence of mental fragility.

We simply bottle it far too frequently to put this down to something other than mental weakness.

God I hate “cherry ripe” In that context

The 'learnings' from our off season review were to "stick to the plan and never waiver"

Wonder if that included 0-5. Legs were definitely heavy. Salem looked like he running in quicksand.

Responding by suggesting we offload him. Because he kicked poorly, after kicking five goals last week and winning us the game. He also won us the game against Freo. He’s won us 2 out of 5 games this year off his own boot.

We are crying out for speed and ball use and talent like his. But by all means let’s trade him off because he, like every other Melbourne player, missed gettable shots.

I think Lindsay should be traded too. 0.5 this year. A wasted draft pick.

How many did he kick in rounds 1, 2 and 3?

Has the club released the “all of the behinds” video on the MFC website yet?

Perfect. Imagine it. Can they play the Benny Hill music over the top.

And insert Kozzzzy kicking a left foot snap from 18 metres out and not making the distance.

Good- 30 shots at goal ( aj and kosi not scoring from 25 metres is so amateurish btw). The game plan is generating scoring chances. Turner.

Bad - Lever if he's not intercepting is a bit lost one on one, but we already knew this. Hardly cost us the game tho. More importantly, because we press up, our game plan falls apart a bit (goals out the back) when we either fail to bring the pressure or the opposition are pin point with their kicks. Both happened today, and allowing WM to get so many kicks is just unnecessarily rolling the dice. Sacrifice some structure to take away the one real weapon they have. Dumb coaching if not arrogant imo.

Ugly. I know he's a DL favourite but 16 disposals and team high clangers from Oliver is not great but the dump kicks in q4 should see him dropped. Yes, dropped. If you want learnings and you want to set standards then senior players who are being paid 1mln a year need to have some repercussions for blindly not following team instructions game after game year after year. As soon as he feels rushed for time he blindly hacks. Its not good enough.

One of the reasons is that a reasonable percentage of those weren't simple shots - because of the way the ball was coming in and where we were having to kick from. Quick snaps from 40m are always going to be iffy, as are attempts from marks on the 50m line.

(Though some of those players aren't good kicks either, which is never going to change.)

Not watching the game? Several set shots from marks or free kicks is what I saw.

The one in the last when he had Lindsay on the boundary suited to his left side where he just carelessly bombed away was nothing short of appalling.

I agree with you about the standards and stuff, and i would have him dropped in a heart beat, but you and I know that will never happen.

Just watched Goody’s presser. Those of you who were going to write furious letters to the club will be pleased to know that he’s aware that we find it frustrating when the team doesn’t capitalise on scoring opportunities.

But I already wrote him a harshly worded email with ALL CAPS and demanded we learn to kick.

Night wasted.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
