Great to see we’re dropping 205 games of experience and replacing them with 49—courtesy of three players who wouldn’t crack the 22 at most clubs this week. And two of the three are the wrong ones. If I’m JVR, I’m calling my manager tonight.

Unfortunately, Roo could not catch a cold at the moment. It’s like he’s on the back cover of the Violent Femmes third album – the one with the band members at the hairdressers with their arms in huge fish up to the elbow. Very difficult to catch a ball that way I would think.

Fritter is not much better at the moment. He doesn’t know whether to mark the ball or to crumb. Go left or go right. Kick or hand pass. He also just needs some clear air, hopefully.

Truly moronic changes from a desperate and clueless coach.

Let's drop our only reliable goalkicker but keep Spargo who couldn't hit the scoreboard if his life depended on it.

Again we pick a bloke with no match fitness in Tholstrup, who isn't that good to start with. I assume we'll let May hobble around all afternoon as well.

And what's with picking Turner only in even rounds?

A few suggestions that Fritta should be dropped this week.

Given he wasn't dropped after hitting rock bottom in round 3, and actually playing better footy the last 2 weeks including a sizzling goal from the 50 arc, I'd have his omission chances at approximately 0% this week.

What a silly call from this poster calling Fritsch a 0% chance of getting dropped this week.

Of course he’s going to get dropped after his best game of the year and kicking a goal that electrified the side for a few rare minutes.

Can you name the only ‘reliable’ goal kicker?

You do have to live in the real world though. We don’t have midfielders playing for casey ready to go. X and Langford have come in as rookies and are 22 locks.

Laurie Brown Billings Woey could come in for the sake of a statement but none really deserve a call up. Aside from Laurie arguably.

No one tries harder than Viney. Despite his terrible kicking he deserves a run over the above guys

I didn't say we should dump them though. I said if he wanted to make a statement then those are the players to go. He has dumped Fritsch and JVR for one of two reasons:

  1. Form

  2. We're simply trying something different

If it's the former, it doesn't address the issue of delivery or structure. We are still a tall forward down because even though we brought Turner back, we dumped him for Linsday.

If the latter, then that suggests our issues lie in the forward line.

Either way the same issue persists in that we are basically putting it all on the house that the issue isn't necessarily our gameplan: it's who we have in the forward line. I just don't subscribe to that.

Viney, Rivers and Sparrow should be next on the block.

None one of these players have come even remotely close to putting in a half decent performance this year.

Good changes.

Whilst they mightn’t give us the Win we all hope for, they do give me a feeling of optimism.

The reason is, it’s the first time I can recall Goodwin making a blunt statement at selection.

In doing so he has also simultaneously shown he has some creativity as well as potentially will now no longer play his favourites.

At least that’s a start.

For who?

If this thread is anything to go by, imagine the outrage if Viney/Rivers/Sparrow were dropped for the likes of Woewodin//Laurie/Brown/Culley.

People keep saying Goodwin plays favourites and demand he drops certain players, while simultaneously giving zero thought to who we actually have at Casey to replace them.

It’s not always about who replaces them. Viney doesn’t warrant a game atm, that’s the statement I’d make. Give Culley a run.

When Simon talked about changes during the week I thought he might be about to don clean jocks and socks.

It is likely that he now has having kept them on for two weeks longer than he should have.

Three forwards dropped. About bloody time. The forward 50 has been a mess the whole of the first 5 rounds. Players down on form, lack of rhyme and reason in the way it moves or is structured... make me wonder what the hell they have been doing in the pre-season.

5 rounds in and winless with just one reasonable performance in the first round, 3 abject beatings and, in the last round a bad loss after scoring just 3 goals in 3 quarters of the game. I really need some one to convince me that the coaching team have any idea what the problems are or if they have any clue how to rectify the problems.

I've got no idea but I would at least have tried a few things over the last 3 weeks to see if the changes made any difference.

Select on form and give those out of form a chance to work their way back via Casey. Play players where they have proved themselves capable of playing. Windsor on the wing. Rivers in defence. Petracca in the middle. Fristch close to goal. Chandler and Pickett front and center at the drop of the ball in the forward 50.

Across the ground get back to basics and build from there.

Even when we were playing well Freo had our measure and I don’t see why this game will be any different especially given we are now playing worse.

Freo has speed to burn and we don’t never have and especially now with an aging list.

fair enough.

we still don’t have mids with good skills at casey so we can’t bring in anyone

Our game plan is obviously a mess

Highly likely it’s going to be ugly. The best we can hope for is we flood back and stop them scoring

Wow, this forum has become like drinking battery acid. Difficult to enjoy when so many eat our own.

I for one am glad Goodwin came out and backed his program, players, coaches and game plan. Yes, he might be totally delusional, but I love our coach digging in and showing defiance - even to our own supporters.

As for ins and outs, I have no problem with Tholstrup coming straight back in. The only options are a bunch of Casey players who have shown limited AFL standard. Glad to see Fullarton get a go, a bit surprised Turner comes back in, but again, only Casey players as options. Jefferson's hand possibly yet to heal fully.

I agree with the views about the skills and clearances from our midfield but the next wave of midfielders (Rivers, Kozzie, McVee, Sparrow) are either out of form or yet to return from injury, so I can only hope of improvement from Trac, Clarry, Viney etc...

Goodwin backs his program, the problem is we are 0-5 with a totally DELUSIONAL coach that has overt grandios opinions of his ability that he has a master plan! Sorry his time has come and gone with 1 lousy flag to show for it! Nup not buying!

Feel for the bloke. It must be hard to stay on an AFL list when your surname is Culley

I'm choosing to imagine a glorious victory 👌

This is a danger game for the pretenders in Purple

Has anyone mentioned that Kolt, Windsor, Langford & Lindsay are playing their first match together?

Our future at play and wouldn't it be great if all 4 impact the game

That's the exact reason I want him gone.

He's stubbornness is born out of incompetence not confidence. Blokes clueless and out of touch.

Were going nowhere and clubs are blowing past us at the speed of light.

1 lousy flag? I waited 57 years for it and it was magnificent. I will sing the praises of Goodwin for the rest of my life for the 2021 flag.

Is he coaching well now - no, I believe he is coming out of a particularly poor patch of coaching. I am unsure if Chaplin is a good forward coach, and if our skills are so poor then what has Choco been doing? Lots of coaching stuff is a concern. But for me, much more needs to be laid on our players, especially our senior players.

I also consider that the club has no CEO, no home base, and an interim president so I don't lay all our ills at Goodwin's feet.

But I will watch the Freo game believing we can win, hoping we can win, even if I continue to scream at the TV in outrage and frustration at what we produce.

Whilst yes, tres maverick... it is a circuit breaker. Needed.

Btw ..who is this wondrously reliable goal kicker you speak of ?

Amazing that they drop Fritsch but not Oliver has been out of form twice as long as Fritsch. Oliver IS the problem but they refuse to drop him.

Is there anything funnier than the same people harping on about dropping Fritsch, now singing his praises when he is dropped??

There’s are a lot of schizophrenics on demon land

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.
