Forfeit might be better

i'll be surprised if we manage to restrict the damage to 50 points

I just want at least 2 of Jefferson/Turner/Fullarton/Johnson playing.

JvR should never be a solo fwd and expected to chop out in the ruck.

I really hate to single out a pkayer but JVR is a big problem for our midfield. He refuses or is unable to get separation and lead flat out at the ball carrier (and hsi ball read and bodywork is sub par). He's just not quick enough and his only strength is his pack crashing ability which the game has moved away from. He's taken 6 marks in 5 weeks. He needs to play back or be dropped. At this point its not about confidence, you have to make tough calls and realise he isnt the right piece for this puzzle.

JVR needs to improve but my god he needs support in the forward line. I can't believe we're expecting him to play as our solo key forward and as a second ruck.

Incredibly poor from the coaching staff to not select Johnson/Turner (not that I think it would've made much of a difference to the result tonight...)

Wow, only 6 marks all season for JVR!?

The fact we rolled out one key forward who is also expected to play as a back up ruckman was pretty dumb. Get two of Turner, Fullarton or Jefferson in. Expecting that JVR might have a better game today with our second tall being 188cm was a shocking decision.

Sparrow should be put on notice, 10 disposals in 2 weeks is simply not good enough. Tagging role last week, no excuses this week. Spargo had a shocking first half but had a good second half. He was brought back too soon off that achilles injury and deserves a chance to build on that.

Both games against Fremantle last season we were shredded in clearances. More Pickett, Rivers and Langford, rotate Petracca through and throw Viney on a HFF. I'm beating the same drum but Vines can't keep playing midfield, he's too slow and fumbly. Getting feasted on by quicker, younger and hungrier players. Coaches should consider giving some of our own younger guys such as Lindsay and Windsor a run through there, the latter should be nowhere near the backline.

Not sure many of these changes help us defend the oppositions uncontested ball movement through the middle of the ground, that's clearly a system issue and is not an overnight fix. Here's hoping we're not on the end of another bloodbath at the G next week.

Goodwin stating he's more likely to back the senior players in to turn their form around than make changes to the team.

Since there’ll be about 20 of us at the MCG what sandwiches shall I bring? Who’s in charge of the cheese platter? Easter egg hunt at half time 😂

Chicken, lettuce and mayo please.

If the Easter weather is good I can’t see us getting close to 20k at this.

Having been through the tortuous experience of watching both West Coast and Melbourne live on the same day it’s going take a lot of therapy to get me there.

Given our recent issues against Freo i think this is the week we hit rock bottom. As in our first 80+ loss for the year.

I assume Goodwin will coach for a 12.8.80 to 7.8.50 kind of loss.

Having only van Rooyen as the key forward was never gonna work too much on the kid they expect him to be Carey he's no Carey.

They need 2 key forwards with Fritsch as the 3rd tall, I don't care who they are. Give Fullerton a go we have to see what he's capable of.

B: Petty, May, McVee

HB: Salem, McDonald, Bowey

C: Langdon, Langford, Windsor

HF: Chandler, Johnson, Petracca

F: Fritsch, Fullerton, Spargo

FOLL: Gawn, Oliver, Pickett

IC: Lindsay, Sparrow, Viney, Rivers

SUB: Melksham

In: McVee, Johnson, Fullerton

Out: Sharp, Henderson, van Rooyen

OUT: Sparrow (100 and out, never to be seen again), Hendo
IN: McVee, Jefferson

Out: JVR, Sparrow, Melksham, Henderson

In: Fullerton, McVee, Adams, Brown

Petty to stay forward and Adams is deserving of a promotion. JVR needs to head to the VFL to find some form and Fullerton needs to be rewarded. McVee straight in as long as he can run out a game allowing Rivers permanent midfield time or one of Lindsay or Windsor back to a wing. Brown brings speed and defence to our forward 50 ground balls.

Out:

Sparrow - what can you even say? He's not good at a single thing, and the guys around him aren't good enough to hide that anymore. At least JJ could run. Sparrow has been gifted 100 games. What role does he play? Non-goal kicking/non-tackling/non-marking high half forward?

Sharp - can't do much besides run and kick the odd goal. Why not play him on the wing?

JVR - so out of touch its actually damaging. Let him kick a couple of bags and reset at Casey. An Anzac Eve call up is his carrot.

Henderson to sub - clever player, but not much of an impact from the start.

In:

McVee - finally allows Rivers to move to full time mid

Jefferson - showed something, will hopefully just lead. I'm not optimistic but I'm hopeful.

Fullarton - has to come in off his Casey form. Petty to stay back to combat their insane number of KPFs.

McVee - May - Petty

Salem - McDonald - Bowey

Chandler - Oliver - Langdon

Melksham - Jefferson - Fritsch

Pickett - Fullarton - Spargo

Gawn - Petracca - Rivers

Langford - Lindsay - Windsor - Viney

Henderson

IN: Me. I'll be there. Can't wait to get back to the 'G. We are lucky to play there while we are still playing in the AFL.

There are clearly a number of issues (selection, performance, effort, playing style) going on that indicate the leadership is failing. I would like to see old leadership OUT and new leadership IN. Doesn't have to be a person, can be an approach.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
