I would not be averse to him playing in that role anyway, notwithstanding the current rib issue. A great weapon to have there in the post ANB period and it would give our younger mids starting with Trent Rivers the opportunity to blossom in a new look midfield.

I wouldn't be surprised if he'll prefer to play midfield. Ironically, even though it's more contested, you're less likely to get a defender jumping up into your back or crushing their knee into your head/neck.

Here's to a quick and fast recovery. If there's a silver lining it be done during pre-season and an opportunity to build on his mental fortitude, that I'm sure grew significantly in past 6 months.

Believe it or not, I fractured a rib leaning over one of those big wheelee bins. I had inadvertently dropped my keys into it and was kind of see sawing over it trying to reach down. Rubbish. You obviously haven’t read our track experts posts of Trac’s training so far.

Yes he may be a little apprehensive inwardly te body contact when games start but he has not apparently been avoiding body contact at training.

Suggest you read the training reports or better get your half glass empty body and brain down for your eyes to see when he resumes.

Snd I expect an apology when you do for such incorrect posting.

Garbo by name Garbo by nature and information!!

Yes, off to the sin bin my dear boy/ girl

It’s a contact sport.
I like the fact that we are training and tackling hard.
It was a serious part of our game 3-4 seasons ago

Make the opposition earn every possession in all parts of the ground

Totally 100% agree. Would love to see the boys taking the training track intensity out onto the ground this year.

Want opposition teams and supporters to see a fully motivated team with silky skills that does not take a backward step. A team on a mission.

Christian Petracca’s pre-season took a major hit at Dees training last Friday, but the superstar midfielder appears to have shaken off his latest rib injury as Melbourne hit the track on Monday.

It must take a lot of thought to write a self-contradictory sentence like that.

This is the Code Sports article completed on 13.1.2025 by Josh Barnes.

Christian Petracca has shown no signs of discomfort as he trained just three days after cracking his ribs at Melbourne training.

The superstar midfielder was on light duties but ran laps and took in some power movement drills with ease.

Petracca suffered the blow to his ribs on Friday, almost seven months to the day since a brutal collision when playing against Collingwood that lead to broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and partially punctured lung.

That horrific injury ruled Petracca out of the back-end of the 2024 season but he has had a strong pre-season to date and he posted on social media on Sunday that he was “feeling good physically and mentally”.

Melbourne is yet to put in place a concrete plan to return Petracca to contact but the Norm Smith medallist will be able to keep his fitness up as his ribs recover.

Despite one of their star players copping a physical blow last week, Melbourne didn’t hesitate in getting into contact on Monday, stepping almost immediately into physical centre bounce and defensive set up drills that involved heavy tackling.

The midfielder wasn’t the only Demon away from the main group to start Monday’s session, with skipper Max Gawn, defender Jake Lever and youngster Taj Woewodin making up a triumvirate of players in fluoro caps, designated to non-contact.

Players who impressed.

Kysaiah Pickett – A centre bounce drill was orchestrated to provide clean takeaways but Pickett was impressive in bursting out of the middle of the ground. The Dees love getting the goalkicker around centre stoppages.
Tom Campbell – With Gawn off to the side, Campbell showed his deft ruckwork in the centre. He was helped by a drill designed to showcase his tapwork but the former Roo, Dog and Saint put the ball on the spot for quick onballers.
Shane McAdam – The ex-Crow’s first year at Melbourne was a disappointment and he has been hampered physically to start this pre-season but he showed a flash of his goalkicking ability with a nice dribble goal from deep in a pocket.

Gawn fractured his larynx after suffering a nasty blow to his throat at training in December but his booming voice could be heard on the track when he joined in skill drills. The ruck sweated out running when teammates went into contact mode.

Lever has been recovering from knee and shoulder injuries leading into 2025 but he took on some light tackling when sent to the sidelines.

Injury-prone defender Christian Salem limped off the track at one point, pointing to his lower right leg and seeking attention from the medical staff.

Ball winner Clayton Oliver pushed through a centre bounce drills despite at one point taking off his left boot to reveal extensive strapping around his ankle, foot and toes.

Hopefully it was his first full session today and he can put his injury issues behind him.

There's a vacancy in round 1 with Kozzie out.

Rib Tickler No Laughing Matter: Petracca's Injury Raises Eyebrows

Melbourne, Australia – In a shocking twist for fans of the Melbourne Demons, superstar Christian “CP5” Petracca, the recipient of the prestigious Norm Smith Medal, has reportedly sustained a rib injury during a training session last week.

Initial speculation suggested that Petracca “cracked” a rib during a grappling drill, sparking concern among the club's supporters. However, the claims were quickly challenged by a dedicated fan known only as “Pickett Fence,” who was spotted in a gillie suit, cleverly concealed in a bush for a closer look at the team’s training. “YOU CAN’T CRACK A RIB FROM GRAPPLING. EVER,” he insisted in a statement to our publication.

Ethan Tremblay, a frequent contributor to the popular fan forum “Demonland,” and resident know-it-all, attempted to counter Pickett’s assertion, arguing that rib injuries are, in fact, quite common in grappling situations. “Actually, rib injuries are super common as a result of grappling”.

Undeterred, Pickett responded swiftly, providing clarification that the injury did not even occur during grappling. The debate continued, highlighting the passionate discourse among the Demons’ fanbase.

Adding his own observations to the conversation, local resident Doc Roet stated, “believe it or not, I fractured a rib leaning over one of those big wheelee bins. I had inadvertently dropped my keys into it and was kind of seesawing over it trying to reach down.”

Cranky Franky, a lifelong Demon’s supporter, known for his positive outlook, stated that the, “season was already over” after hearing reports of Petracca’s injury.

As the Demons prepare for the upcoming season, fans will be eager to see how Petracca’s injury impacts the team’s performance, especially after a disappointing finish in 2024. With hopes of returning to the top eight, the club is looking to bounce back stronger than ever.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
