Should be 70k plus if we had kept the consistency of 2021-2023.

I still think that with a rejuvenated list and coaching staff, and playing some exciting style of footy, things can improve fats. Regardless if we play finals or not.

Give me 2018 again.

    to be perfectly honest, anything over 50k is a 'win' for mfc - our standard attendance is 25k or thereabouts; our membership-to-attendee # remains quite strong

    the notion that we are a big or even a mid-sized club is a misnomer; we're clearly not - we're always around about par with the aints, and barely ahead of footscray and north, purely from a membership perspective

    at our most successful, post-premiership, we achieved around 70k members - at our lowest ebb, a bit over a decade ago, we were around half that i seem to recall

    now, admittedly, memberships for all clubs have 'grown' since the mid 00s, but memberships are a 'nice' thing for the club not something that actually effects the day to day of what is happening from an afl-wide or an organisational standpoint; from head office's pov the only thing that matters is that broadcast revenue (from the saudi pif via dazn now) and wagering revenue (from a myriad of gambling agencies) continues to rise

    Yep they just showed the drop away vs what was projected by Pert just after the flag and put up his quote saying we were aiming to become a big club with 75k members and big crowds etc

    We have lost 9,794 members vs 2024 (so far).

    Let's conservatively say each membership brings in roughly $120 on average

    Leaving us roughly $1.17 million down on 2024

    I calc the average cost to be $190 so the drop in revenue is close to $1.875 ml.

    On a slightly brighter not, to offset that, the club might make special membership offers to help. And ANZAC and KB being Home games will also help offset the lost membership revenue.

    It is next year that the $ pain will be felt!

    ...plus the sponsorship dollars when the sponsors realise there are 20% fewer Melbourne members to sell product to.....

    Who would bother going to those marquee games to watch our woeful efforts.

    I've been twice this year & its obvious to me & everyone around me the glaring tactical problems but the Brains Trust seems oblivious.

    what surprises me a little is the assumption that the membership fall is simply a result of the teams lack of on field success .I suspect that a significant group of supporters are completely disilluisioned by the AFL attitude to the Dees.They have had to swallow the AFls handling of tne Brayshaw incident ,the Mac Andrew Drafting ,the Petracca incident and free agency compensation .It is apparent that we do not rate highly at headquarters and we seem always to be behind the 8 ball with the AFL.

    They would have been budgeting 75k-80k you would think so 50k & 70k would be a huge blow (dollar wise)

    If members don’t turn up their $$’s are already in the till, the filth and Tiges $$’s are always welcome and the way that pies are playing they might fill the stadium.

    Sorry Dr. Gonzo what I meant is our membership dollars are already in the clubs bank acct whether we turn up or not. Not sure how the AFL distribute the extra dollars from oppo supporters but I would imagine the more that turn up the better for our bottom line.

    Yeah I think it's more the stadium that pays out based on attendances rather than the AFL but who knows. I remember seeing charts a while back stating how much each club made from different crowd numbers at MCG and Docklands, the MCG dollars went up significantly after 60k (and it didn't distinguish between members/non-members).

    This is severely out of date but look at page 8 in this document from 2011.

    Increasing membership to beyond 75,000+ members will be a goal for new Demons CEO Paul Guerra.

    However, alot of that is interconnected with team performance. Gotta win more games!

    The Home Base at Caulfield Race Course needs to be the number #1 priority for the Melbourne Football Club.

    After that, then it will be about growing membership numbers.

    Nevertheless, the only way to greatly increase membership over the long term is sustained success. Over 20 years of success to create new generations of Melbourne supporters and members. This means winning more Premierships!

    The future of the club depends on the kids who come on board after the premiership.
    Let them grow as demon supporters and turn them into membership buying adults.
    You need to hold their attention and Goodwins ugly uninspiring gameplan has bored them to tears since.
    No kid wants to go watch their team scramble 10 goals and lose.
    We don't start playing some consistent exciting footy soon the club will wither and die a slow death.
    If Goodwin can do it, fantastic.
    If he can't .... Get rid of him ASAP.

    I don't think he can.
    He's had plenty of time to fix issues and hasn't.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • NON-MFC: Round 08

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
