Quite like Jay Clark but I find it fascinating that he is part of a huge chorus of journo's seriously questioning our culture. In the same breath saying that Caleb Daniel would be a good fit at the Dee's. Sort of replacement for Gus.  So which is it? Bad culture that repels players or somewhat of a destination club? If we're so dysfunctional why would Daniel or any players want to come near us? These blokes just make it up as they go along and conveniently forget aforementioned statements and prognostications.

Jay Clark's fine most of the time but he bats about 1 in 100 in trade times, he's completely all over the shop.

That said, why would anyone join Melbourne? Because there's still only 18 clubs in the comp, and only 9 in Melbourne. St Kilda and Essendon appear to be going nowhere fast. Richmond are in full tank mode. The Dogs cap is surely full to the brim, hence why they're trying to offload Daniel in the first place. As bad as things are looking right now it shouldn't be a complete disaster.

Some good points you've made but if Clark and his cohorts are on the money about our 'culture'(God I've grown to hate that word!) why on earth would anyone come near us? Of course we all know that's not true but I found it more than ironical that on the same show that MFC's apparent problems were laid bare, less thelan 5 seconds later all panellists agreeing that Daniel would be a good fit for the Demons. Fair dinkum! The Three Stooges.

Bevo clearly lost faith in Daniel as a half back last year, without elite speed he gives up a lot defensively. Tried him on ball, which resulted in him running and winning the ball well but his lack of punch out of stoppages hurt them. Sanders, Harmes, Gallagher and eventually settled on Ed Richards for that role.

So this year he's been used a bit here and there and played in the 2's, now he's back in the side and playing wing and half forward.

We need half back depth but I don't think Daniel is a clear upgrade on Salem and Bowey.

We need overall depth and having a theoretically versatile player who can play forward, wing, half back would be nice.

It's not a total no but it's certainly not a resounding yes from me.

He's certainly a player we need to cast a keen eye over to see if his 2024 form is exactly up to the standard. We can't do a Hunter or Billings and just expect out fitness and coaching program to elevate players who just don't have it anymore. Glass half full recruiting should be for younger players at bad sides rather than doubting Bevo.

Is he an upgrade or downgrade on bowey ?? No way we could have both in the team

Based on Bowey’s season I’d say an upgrade.

I don’t mind it. Salem’s body struggles with the demands of modern footy. Daniels is a backup for that role if Christian keeps breaking down.

I wouldn't. There is a reason he isn't getting a regular game. His best years were really good, but he is one of the first the fans turn on when things aren't going great and for good reason. He doesn't have the ability to turn a losing game around. Think about how angry are getting on here with Fritsch defensive efforts in the forward line. Now imagine that in the backline.

I would much rather have Bowey over Daniel long term. Definitely not both of them.

He was a quality player at one point, these days not so much. Reminds me too much of Tim Lamb's work with Billings and Hunter.

Despite his 'so-so' season, I'd rather get more games into Bowey who I think would offer more in the long term.

If all else fails. We need to recruit a speedy, skillful draftee that can be blooded on HBF. It’s how Sheezel, Daicos were played too. No has beens.

We should be going for cheap options like Daniel who can fill a role rather than expensive options like Houston anyway...especially given the current situation of potentially struggling to field a Melbourne Demons 5 a-side basketball team in 2025

I'm not sure if the hilarious Ivan Reitman pairing of Muggsy Bogues and Farris-White can cover the departures of Jackson, Maynard, Trac and Watts on their own.

Too small, too old and can't kick far enough. Probably too slow as well.

Gets the ball and disposes generally neatly.

Yes a fighter and gains meterage.

It’s a YES from me. .

Jay Clark just said that he thinks we will go after Caleb Daniel after missing out on Houston for ball use off half back.

Thoughts?

We are scrapping the bottom of the barrel. We need high class quality players and we go after another dinky kick in Daniels?? Jahheezus the place is paarked! No bloody way known!

Daniel was a good player. Had lost his pace. Short and slow.  Good kick but short and slow is not moving forward in today’s game.
NO NO NO from me

Not sure you can play Daniel, Salem and Bowey in the same backline. Unless Salo goes into the midfield again, and I'm not sure his body could cope with that full time

Good replacement for Tomo

Can take the 3rd tall

his form has dipped markedly from his best

i think he'd be a good bit of depth and an opportunity to bring a multi-positional player into the wider squad

however, i think jay is just seeing something at a distance and seeing if he squints it becomes any clearer to his vision

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
