There is really no downside for Pickett, as he gets paid whatever happens. And, if the west is calling out to him in a couple of years, does he put out his hand for another pay rise?

All the risk is with the club who is stuck with a contract for a player who could lose form or interest in the game, or get seriously injured at any time. And let's be honest, in 9 years time he may well reach the 16 week suspension threshold for automatic deregistration from the league.

If we can find some middle ground and give him 5-6 years, that would be perfect.

Daicos will probably get a similar deal from Collingwood. Would they be criticised for that?

If we lose Kossie then I'm not sure we'll be able to convince our players of being a realistic premiership chance in the next few years. This makes players young and old want more money to stay at the club, and I think it also hurts the general motivation and development of the group. We struggled so hard to get off the bottom of the ladder, and it's easy to see how smaller vic clubs like North and the Saints have got themselves stuck in a cycle of overpaying players on potential, and not being able to attract players who can make a meaningful difference. Is $1.4 per year for 9 years too much for what Kossie has achieved, I'd say definitely yes, but for the club I think it's the move we have to make. As a side note Freo can get stuffed and I hope Luke Jackson either blows up their wage bill or goes to another club for a big sack of cash.

He already is experiencing homesickness at times and has been for a while. Bouts of homesickness are something many people live with. The Club has been successful in accommodating Kozzie’s need to regularly visit family (shoutout to Matty Whelan working quietly in the background).

I totally understand the concerns about the long term nature of the contract but I think that’s just the nature of being a smaller club that struggles to bring in star recruits.

When you manage to draft a Kozzy, you do everything you possibly can to keep a Kozzy because it’ll extremely tough to get someone like him into our club in a trade or as a free agent unless we are premiership favourites.

The lack of true permanent HQ, the smaller crowd sizes, the years of media drama all hurt our ability to recruit. Plus, we don’t have the same pull in bringing players home. If someone is from WA or SA and wants to go home, the clubs each have a 50/50 chance. If a player like Harley Reid wants to come back to Vic, we have a base level 10% chance before all our other recruitment challenges even come into play.

People are acting like a 32 year old Kosi will have white hair and be walking out in a wheeled frame in 2034. My guess is he will still be an awesome player at 32. Given he was liking Fremantle's posts and texting Fremantle players a matter of a few months ago locking him away for 9 years is GREAT NEWS!

Hopefully i'll be fine too - koz is an exception to my rule of not getting too upset about a gun dees player leaving.

I don't' have a number on my jumper (was going to get 10, but didn't get around to it - where do you get a number added these days?) but if Koz resigns i'm gonna but the Indigenous jumper his dad designed (which is my second fav) and proudly put 36 on it.

I have no issue with the club offering him the world, he's our one superstar in his absolute prime you just can't afford to lose a player like Koz. We aren't really a destination club for free agents so if we don't keep our home grown talent we will very quickly end up like North...

Imagine if he doesn’t sign. Honestly I don’t care what we pay him. I’m stoked we got him, I’ll be stoked we’re keeping him. Other less useful humans can worry about the money.

To put it into perspective, Max King who’s been injured on and off and shown very little, is signed until 2032 on close to a $1mil a year.

Someone argue with me that Kosi is not a much better player than Max King, who is likely to have more longevity in the game.

If the club didn’t do everything it could to keep kossie and he switched to freo, lit it up for them we would burn the joint down

I’d rather not hand out long contracts either but the market dictates these things. You cannot let a generational talent like kossie walk out the door because you couldn’t agree terms. That would genuinely be small club mentality.
