If this is a salary dump, I'd do the deal if it's similar to the Jack Bowes situation a couple of years ago (see below).

"Geelong was the first club to exploit the newly-introduced salary dumping, taking pick No.7 and Jack Bowes, as well as his $1.6 million contract, off Gold Coast’s hands for just a future third-round pick."

Very different situation. The Suns needed that money off their cap, they were bursting.

Richmond can easily afford to pay Lynch.

The questions are:

- Do they feel they owe Lynch the right to go play for a contender (or at least a not totally full rebuild club)?

- Do they feel Lynch has benefit as a leader or is he just taking up time in the medical room and not connected with the young guys coming through?

- Will they pay 500-800 of the deal to save 700-1M? That’s not an insignificant saving even with their cap not needing it. That’s a huge chunk of front loading on someone like Noah Balta, which then lets you pay top free agent money to anyone coming in down the track.

Yze so far has seemed very benevolent to his older players and keen to turn the page quickly. I don’t think Richmond will just give Lynch up and pay a fat chunk of his salary, but I expect they’d actually pay 500-700 to move him on if they can snag a future 3rd rounder or something and bring in a young tall. The better the pick the more they’d pay.

He's due some luck on the injury front and may end up playing 20 games next year.

If that was the logic we should keep Ben Brown, he’ll play the next 100!

Lynch has a bad knee, but I don’t think it’s BBB level bad. A hammy injury this year might be related but you’d at least have hope it’s just bad luck and the good news is he was back training I believe, they just had no incentive to rush him back.

If it was 2021 and we had the games best midfield and backline I’d be stoked about the plan to get a few games in to him early in the season, put him on ice through winter and fire him up around late July for a finals run. Thoroughly less enthused about that plan now.

If we want to toss around 800k at a tall we would want them to be a forward/ruck support.

I'd take an 'adequate, reliable' forward-ruck over a 'sometimes great, inconsistent, injury plagued' forward-only. In fact, before I took Lynch I'd rather store the coin to go hard at the exceptional 2025 free agency prospects rather than burn it for a non-solution now.

Marginal time preference utility in action!

And you have the whole year to assess and prepare the offer that can satisfy said player. And we'll probably have more cap space as well.

He's high end character and leadership and when fit he can give us something we're desperately lacking, if we get him for virtually nothing outside of money, i don't see why we wouldn't.

I think Tex Walker makes more sense if we go this direction.

The direction of a goofy looking fella with big ears?

We needed a key forward in 22 and 23 and it might have helped this year.  But this year has exposed other weaknesses greater than the tall forward stocks.  I wouldn't say no to someone of his quality but he seems to have too much injury baggage.

The forward line is the least of the problems. JVR, petty, turner, Pickett, fritch, macadam and Jefferson.
The issue is the midfield and delivery into forward 50

You are joking aren’t you? The midfield next year will be Trac, Oliver, Viney, Rivers, McVee, Windsor, Pickett, Tholstrup and pick 5

You’ve got your head in red-and-blue sand if you think we don’t have significant issues in the middle of the ground.

I don't think that would exactly strike fear into opposition sides the way you intended via your post.

it seems there's two schools of thought amongst our demonland brethren...

it's the forward line!

it's the midfield!

i'll be the voice in the room that sais it's actually both...

...and while i'm at it, the backline needs a lot of work cos at the moment i don't trust many of em to hit a target by foot exiting d50!

fortunately, yr only ever two to three changes in personnel away from being a pretty good side again

I’m not sold on Mcvee in the middle. Windsor and tholstrup aren’t even 20 and aren’t proven midfielders. Picket also hasn’t proven that he is a reliable midfielder. If trac or Oliver get injured then you are left with viney:

Which ever way we go with drafting and trading we can't be wasting our early picks on a Dan Houston type.

Our early picks need to be midfielders, the only way I would stray on this would be for a tall key forward named Max King.

24 years old and has plenty of upside.

We are good for key backs with Petty and DT, when the time comes can revert back in the defensive half.

As much as we need cover for Maxy, I personally don't think anyone wants to come and play 2nd fiddle whilst he is on our list.

Fingers crossed Verrall and to a lesser extent Fullarton can step up during the pre season and push there cases for 2025.

You’ve given up on a group based on half a bad season.

Was he actually injured this year or pretending to be so he can have himself fresh for his next club?

No effort made in making a come back at all this year.

That’s not true.

I think

a) the style of football that group was built to play is becoming less effective in the modern game and

b) there are ENORMOUS question marks on whether the two most critical players in that mix will get back to anywhere near their best.

That’s why I’ve given up on them.  They need some help.

8 games in the past two seasons makes him worth blunt steak knives at his age.

Considering we averaged 49 inside 50s per game (often low-quality entries), no forward line is going to have much success regardless of personnel.

Would the Tigers give us their first-rounder to take him off their hands? 32 next year and injury-ravaged. No thanks.

Too much risk for the reward imo

How much would Richmond pay of his salary is also a key factor

If he does somehow come over, does it mean Petty goes down back again for TMac?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.

After a one-year reprieve, the Demons return down the freeway to Kardinia Park — the site of both one of our greatest triumphs and one of our darkest days — as they face the Cats under Friday night lights. This one could get ugly. Who comes in, and who comes out?
