It's Game Day and in just a few hours age-old rivals Melbourne and Collingwood, with a history steeped in blood, sweat and unforgettable clashes, will run out onto the hallowed turf of the MCG, to ignite the stadium one last time in season 2024. Let the memory of this season burn.

Good luck to everyone today. Here's hoping for a good showing and a win.

If not, next season isn't too far away already and I will happily say goodbye to a lot of what this season has brought.

I’ve got a really good feeling we’ll win tonight. Coming off last week’s stirring victory and with no pressure on us, there’s every chance we’ll roll ’em.

I’m gonna say Dees by Halfway (Howes) 22 pts.

I hate myself for thinking this, but long term are we better off losing and getting a higher draft pick? Suns and Saints could go past us on the ladder all going well.

Surely there are a few thinking this. We all want the win, but really all it does is worsen our draft pick. I know we won’t tank, but seems a bit silly to go for a win and risk injuries.

Having said that, will still love to beat the stinking pies, so guess it’s win win 🥇

Is there a dead rubber premiership cup?

Twelve hours to kick-off. Time enough to get in a few chapters of Thinking, Fast and Slow by the recently deceased Nobel prize-winning behavioral scientist Daniel Kahneman and ponder the mental juxtaposition created by the contradictory desire for instant gratification weighed against longer-term goal-setting and its potential promise of greater future rewards as disrupted by a lack of concrete details on the exact timeframe of our own personal demise, which becomes further complicated again for those of us who remain childless or have a lifestyle profile which could be classed as 'high risk' but still boast a full set of teeth, in all providing for an interesting metaphor for the Melbourne Football Club as its players line up for the first bounce in a dead Friday night rubber at the MCG.

Or I could just read the Collingwood forums for a while to kill some time.

Go Dees!

I’m pragmatic and understand the value of a higher draft pick but a win is more important this time around in building belief for this group and giving them a sense of unity before they head into their next pre-season

To those who prefer to lose for better draft position I say, take a look at our history. It's never been a successful strategy for us. whether its pick 6 or pick 10 JT will find a good player.

I want to win to finish the season on a high. and i want to win because I hate the pies. I don't understand the mindset of a supporter that isn't fussed if we win or not. Trying to win is not optional. every time we play these bastards we play to win, dead rubber or not.

I reckon we'll put in a performance for ANB. Been a great servant. We will have a proper dip in his farewell game.

Feeling confident. Dees by 20 points.

On the injury front, I wonder which Demon player(s) the Filth have in mind to maim, cripple, damage in this 'dead rubber' of a game, as it is their last opportunity for 2024 to so afflict their greatest rival.

My daughter saw this in Munich of all places. Who would have thought u would see this in Munich.

They had Petracca, Viney, Oliver and Fritch.

Hopefully it’s a good sign for tonight.

Feel like we should win this one: Collingwood have no key forwards so if we can put enough pressure through the midfield and force them into long bombs our intercept defenders will clean up. On the flip side they have a heap of dangerous small forwards so if the ball is on the deck a lot we will be in trouble. Looking forward to getting along, bit sad it’s over for another season….

Is that the Petracca doll? Definitely out the door judging by his Hogan-like lack of smile. Also looks a bit fat.

Not sure we have again identified the pies super power over us.  Pace.  They run through the midfield and we lack pace.  The addition of Laurie hardly benefits us in this area.  Daicos brothers.  Crisp. Quaynor.  Love to run it through the corridor.  Pies have a one tall-five small forward setup.  Hill, McCreeery, Elliott, Schulz.  We have Tommo, Tmcd, Lever, Hore, Howes.  McVee has to play back.

If we  really want to go hard in this draft, you can always trade your future 1st to get a pick 6 this year.

It’s not only the draft pick

you need to go into a September game everyone fully fit.  Otherwise you are acting as training cones for the other side.

we can now plan for getting all medical stuff out and done . A full  pre season after 8 weeks break.
we need to give our best players breaks throughout the season. Similar to euro soccer sides .   Not best 22 every game. Pick players for certain roles for certain opponents.   Smarter selection.
Hope we win tonight  it’s ss close to a grand final for both sides

Definitely as to the waning gibbous part, but not so sure about an only moderate Max UV index rating.

Surely we learnt from the tanking years: the worst thing you can do is allow a  belief that losing is acceptable.

Agree.

Who remembers the 'Kruezer cup' match? Where both sides (Demons &  Blues) were trying to lose. Blues left Travis Johnston to run riot ...42 possessions from memory. Demons won, so Carlton got pick #1, which was Kruezer.

I’m talking about tanking Ollie, I would not be disappointed if the cards fell our way and we get pick 5.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
