You are the only charlatan here, ignoring most points I made & selectively picking the first Lions game. In the 2nd one he struggled with McInerney.

If you think he's had a great year you are deluded. I didn't even mention round 1 where Grundy pantsed him.

And let's not talk about the goal kicking which is embarrassing for an AFL player.

He is statistically having his best season in many years if we look at fantasy points.

Never let data get in the way of a good yarn hey.

I know CD rating points aren't everyone's cup of tea, but in the game v North Xerri scored 7.9 which is his lowest rated game for the season. Gawn rated 18.5.

Second time v Brisbane Oscar scored a whopping 7.1 to Gawn's 10.3.

Gawn 16.5 v Briggs 14.0and that was Max's first game back from injury, but anyway his season has been so up and down that even in his down games he's still better than the bloke playing on him.

(You are right that Grundy go the better of him in round 0 but we all know the reason for that).

He’s played injured in finals the last 2 years and there’d be doubts on him carrying this injury through real pressure games this year if needed.

His so called brilliant leadership doesn’t sound so crash at the moment either.

I expect he can play at least 2 more and every chance of 3, but unless there’s a huge discount in his 2025 wage I can’t see the upside here.

And time will tell but so far it’s hard to see where the cash will be required.

Gawn’s now got his. So Viney wants his too, when Jack might not up to the level in 26/27.

Maybe this is good, but I don’t see the amazing optimism to cheer for this like the rest of you lemmings.

Dee, I get your logic here but please.

He was contracted for next year anyway. We've tacked on 2 more because he's still the best ruck and captain in the league but more importantly the timing of such a commitment speaks volumes, particularly right now!

I'd also fully expect that, as others have mentioned, the extension allowed some smoothing of his 2025 earnings.

This bloke is Melbourne

Hat but when a resigning makes more sense as a PR move than for list health - rpfc ain’t gonna like it.

But but but we have negative one ruckman on our list beyond Gawn, so how is giving Gawn another 2 years bad for our list health? We are not exactly brimming with ruck talent.

Does anyone seriously think that Gawn wouldn't be able to contribute, even as a backup, in 2 seasons?

Look at some of the absolute NQRs that have rucked in a premiership after the age of 30.
If Gawn drops his output by 50% in 2 years time, he will still be better than half the rucks in the competition.

Besides, it's ridiculous to suggest we signed him as a PR move, he didn't decide last night to take George on a bike ride, then call Tim Lamb and say "George finally learnt the words to the song, let me sign a 2 year extension".

This smacks of a desperate club trying to distract from whats really going on!

Viney had a peak behind the curtain at North and wants out (perhaps seen how real coaches operate!)

Peterraca wants out...

Houston - Doesn't want to come

Buy hey we re-sign Petty...cmon this bloke is basically a minor upgrade on Sam Weideman 2.0

The last year on a veterans contract would almost certainly be a lesser amount. Maybe even a significantly lesser amount

Probably standard practice at any club as it makes sense to do things that way

Long term contracts the same

I.e. front loading contracts so as to not get stuck with a large amount if a players form drops right off (or injury intervenes)

On Max's goalkicking, up until the current round Max has a career tally of 109 goals 102 behinds. In 2024 he has 11 goals 9 behinds. The leading Ruckman/Goalkicker is Jackson, who is way ahead of allcomers. Max is fourth on the list, just a few goals behind English and Marshall.

Honestly even a retired Gawn would be better than anyone we could get as a backup ruck right now.

This post smacks of a desperate troll trying to earn some some troll clout.

Don't get me wrong, you gets points for trying.

But between you and me, you really need to work on your craft.

I mean, fuchsias forever? C'mon, surely you can do better than that.

And a Sam Weideman reference?

So 2019!

Read some of Cranky Franky"s work for some inspiration.

I have faith in you ff - if you work hard in the off season you just might make the senior.

I never like these types of contracts for older players but I still think Gawn has a lot of good footy left. He doesn't rely on his pace or leap and is a great endurance runner. The fact that he still want to play is a good sign.

Everybody seems to have forgotten that we signed Jordy Lewis on a three year deal when he was 105 years old.
Worked out fine except for the 2018 prelim which I can't lay squarely at his feet.

Statistically, very few ruckmen are Max Gawn

Correct. So statistically minded me checked a few ruckmen, and these were just some who came to mind.

  • Aaron Sandilands went on till 36
  • Dean Cox was 33
  • Todd Goldstein is 36 and still playing
  • Simon Madden was 35 ish
  • Justin Madden was 35 ish

@Cranky Franky Why can't Gawn go on for a similar amount of time?, given that this extension doesn't mean he'll be captain for another 3 years, or even that he'll be our main ruck.

Note I am not disagreeing with your comments that you would prefer single year contracts, as I would with most players north of 30yrs. There is no doubt that the timing of Gawns statement, lined up with the Petracca and Viney speculation is designed to show a fair dollop of confidence in the club and it's direction.

The larger game is a 36 year old with 1000 injuries collecting a pay cheque like Ben Brown was this year.

It’s ok to just be patient with veterans and sign them when required.

If the club needed a sugar hit of a Gawn extension we are in big trouble.

We don’t know the specifics of the contract

why couldn’t the club contract so that if Gawn isn’t available a lesser payment is made?

the assumption that we pay the same salary if players play or don’t play - can we assume that?

He's a freak athelete Gawn. Built for endurance and with inspiring leavels of resilience and mental strength.

We should also consider that Max played very little footy between 17 and 22 due to injury. Plenty of gas in the tank, though I'd prefer he only play 16 - 18 games in the H&A season. If we can find him am effective long term understudy he could go on another 5 years.

Every player is only one injury away from retirement whether 21 or 31.

I don’t know why it couldn’t happen next year.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
