@Jaded No More I worked it out DeeSpencer = Tom Morris

But in seriousness, and something that I don't think gets enough recognition. Gawn went and sacrificed his role as Ruck to try and make the Grundy option work out. This is an All Australian, All Time Melbourne great, willing to share his lauded role to make the team better. Remember the GF when Jackson was running hot. Personification of team orientated and selfless, leads by example in clutch moments all the time, not just when it is easy.

Hate to sound like DeeSpencer here, I really hate it, but what are we doing? He had a year to run. He’s 33 at the end of the deal, now 35. I have said it before - Gawn will not wimper into the night in a pocket - he will go out doing a massive injury playing first ruck. He should be on year to year contracts to give us flexibility. And he should hand over the captaincy to Lever or (here we go) Petracca.

Ah well, what’s done is done, but when a resigning makes more sense as a PR move than for list health - rpfc ain’t gonna like it.

This is all completely fair, but we don't know the terms. I'd doubt it's big money, hence more years.

Jesus I don't agree with all things @DeeSpencer but the pile on has been a bit pathetic purely for having a different opinion.

If you doesn't agree, cool, either ignore him or make a counter argument instead of dropping the nuffy response of "go and support another team".

DS is clearly a passionate supporter who clearly doesn't see things through the rosy red and blue lenses like some on here do.

He just calls it as he sees it and I think it's a good to have different sets of opinions even if you don't agree with it because it gives a different perspective on the topic.

Now on the Max signing, the way I look at it is that they're now putting a transition timeline for our next hire apprentice.

We'll clearly target a young ruck either this off season or next and with Kalani White also coming through he'll have at least 2 years with Max as an apprentice. That's great development right there!

I would like to think that if we are to start a transition plan then that means Max will slowly start to phase out to a forward instead of a starting ruck giving the next person more opportunities as a starting ruckman and Max as the secondary chop out.

Max will also finish the year on 224 games.  This means he'll surpass 250 games which is just a remarkable effort considering how slow he started with his AFL! Personally I just didn't think he'd get there at all just with all hid injuries he had earlier on.

All in all a great signing for the footy club! but please let's give him a chop out with the media commitment when [censored] hits the fan. Max shouldn't have to be the face of the club amongst everything negative.

Can you explain why it’s ok for DS to pile on the club for Max’s  extension but you don’t think it’s ok for posters to pile on his ridiculous comments. There has been so much negativity lately and after a fantastic win & brilliant news re our Captain..its good to enjoy some positivity…

gawn's 2024 has been absolutely sensational

there's no reason to think he won't be signing a further 3 year deal in 2026 to take him thru to 2030

he's an athletic freak

as a comparison, patrick dangerfield signed a four year deal when he was 30 to take him through to the end of this season; i would imagine from this point on - turning 35 at the start of next season - he'll sign one year deals

but who knows? he strikes me as the sort of player who could play into his late 30s

His 2024 has been up & down. He struggled against Xerri, McInererey & Briggs.

He insists on playing when injured or unwell sometimes to the detriment of the team and he still can't be relied on to kick goals even 30m out directly in front.

Statistically very few ruckmen are any good after 33.

I don't really agree with this. I love Max and think his original intentions were good, but he couldn't play forward as hoped and Grundy couldn't at all. I think it was Max that was the reason the experiment didn't work and he wanted to be back to being number one. There may be other issues too that have been hinted at on here, but I don't know what they are.

We knew what we were getting with Grundy if he regained fitness, but we thought we had a forward winner in Max. If it worked that way (and if the proposed change to 5 interchange came in) we would gave been on to a winner.

One of the unexpected, but enlightening side effects of this thread is that it has exposed the charlatans.

(not referring to you left foot snap)

You are the only charlatan here, ignoring most points I made & selectively picking the first Lions game. In the 2nd one he struggled with McInerney.

If you think he's had a great year you are deluded. I didn't even mention round 1 where Grundy pantsed him.

And let's not talk about the goal kicking which is embarrassing for an AFL player.

The Max Gawn wing coming to the MCG?

Or would it be the Max Gawn High Performance Centre at Caulfield?

Absolutely bizarre extension.

Leadership is going year by year when you’re 32, not asking for a 3 year deal.

Zero faith in the Melbourne list management team.

Some of your best work there DS - maybe your best.

Question- have you and Cranky Franky ever been in the same room together?

Can we talk about maxy's goal kicking please.

We can start with how maxy is one of the most accurate players for shots from outside 50 in the history of the game.

Deeluded?

Rings a bell. Any relation?

Cranky, can you please show me the data on your last paragraph.

It's not that i think that you just made that 'statistic' up, I'm just thinking i might want to to trot that fact out at some stage and I want to have the stats to back it is.

Love your work by the way.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
