The larger game is a 36 year old with 1000 injuries collecting a pay cheque like Ben Brown was this year.

In the final year of his contract (2027) he plays the entire year as a 35 year old.

I know it's only detail, but detail matters.

Well done Captain Max Gawn and George, thanks for extending your stay at MFC you bring so much confidence and joy to the club, your 250 is now well and truely in sight and who knows what you are capable of. Thanks also to MFC for organising and announcing this great news at such a critical time in this devilish year. Bravo.❤️💙

Not only is your take on this absolute garbage, it's delusional to think a contract extension is negotiated with someone like Max since the Petracca drama started 5 minutes ago, they would have been talking about this for weeks.

I would happily pay max til he's 40 for what he's done for this club, not just lifting the cup, but dragging us from a mediocre nothing club to 3 consecutive top 4 finishes.

Yeah pretty deluded to think the club came to Max yesterday and were like “Max we need some good news, want to sign for 3 more years please?”

I am sure this decision has been discussed between Max and Jess and the club for weeks if not months.

Great stuff, Max is up there with Robbie for mine as a great player, Captain and loyal Clubman. In my opinion Max would retire rather than be a list clogger, as he is a club first guy if he thought he was done before his contract ran out.

As for George singing other clubs’ theme songs. Carlton was bad enough but the Filth theme song…considering calling Child Services 🤣😂

🔴🔵

It's actually bigger than this I think @Deevout. I'm calling it now. Grave abuse of human rights.

I recon Jess is in the driver's seat down there on the Peninsular. She would have been working away on it with Perty in the background. Raising children is costly and we need at least another four children to materialise from this relationship.

George is definitely going to be our new social media manager and going by Louie’s size, I reckon he will be lining up in the ruck as early as 2028.
Now we just need a FF and a FB.

Absolutely bizarre extension.

Leadership is going year by year when you’re 32, not asking for a 3 year deal.

Zero faith in the Melbourne list management team.

Interspersed with some sound football knowledge are your posts like this one. Fresh air and exercise is my tip if you’re feeling this way, works for me.

I love Max and I love the fact he has committed to the club, he will go down as one of the modern greats of our club.

I feel a little uneasy about posting this next bit but I think Tim Lamb has been over generous with the length of the contract just like with Ed. Is Max really not going to sign a two year contract? Anyway just my humble opinion.

gawn's 2024 has been absolutely sensational

there's no reason to think he won't be signing a further 3 year deal in 2026 to take him thru to 2030

he's an athletic freak

as a comparison, patrick dangerfield signed a four year deal when he was 30 to take him through to the end of this season; i would imagine from this point on - turning 35 at the start of next season - he'll sign one year deals

but who knows? he strikes me as the sort of player who could play into his late 30s

To be fair, he did basically turn up to a birthday party and announce the likelihood of getting prostate cancer at that age.

So, you know, booooooooooooooo.

I have no idea what the context of this story is so I'm only judging him purely from a football discussion point of view.

Do you know what. After yesterdays good win & max giving us some good news it finished the weekend off well.

Plus the fact george announced it just made it cuter

I'd estimate that 90% of the barneys that people have on this site are simply down to a lack of nuance in what they're trying to say.

How dare you say that?

He did sign a 2 year contract. He was already contracted for next year. This is a 2 year extension

Criticising his leadership by signing on at a time when commitment to the club has never been more important from our leaders is an absolutely awful take that somehow surpasses your other awful takes.

Is there a debate to be had about signing him for another three seasons, instead of perhaps two? Possibly, yes. But as is so often the case you launch with ridiculous OTT stuff like this and put people off side.

FWIW I’m with @Gator - lesser rucks have recently played to age 35+, and Gawn is not only the GOAT but he is physically gifted. Age shouldn’t constrain him.

What a Leader ❤️💙

I have it on good authority he signed his contract by grabbing a kitchen knife, knicking his finger and scratching his name in blood on the contract!!

A couple of others may do themselves a favour and have agood look at this guy!

Yes true. I should have said not sure we need him signed up for three more years. I will be fascinated to see how long May’s next contract is.

It will just be the 2 of us but welcome aboard

When the media start drinking some coolaid after the week we have had, this is good news.

We have a long term strategy to TRAIN a Maximus 2.  Max will provide a presence purely because of his size. Kozzie will kick a 100 goals. Van REooyen will become Van RUnnin @ CHF . Turner ,mobile forward, Fritta the HFF and Petty CHF

Go Dees !!!

I guess it must have been after his 2016 break-out year that I imagined a scenario where max would disappear and go back to coffees and delivering pizza; a 'what could have been' or an answer to a trivia question for the MFCSS brigade (who was it who blew chunks on ...?).

For context, I had a facebook memory today from 2014: going home from the MCG with my 8 year old (also a 'George) from a game where we kicked 3 goals against the second last placed GWS*.  This was our lot and it felt like it would be our lot for ever, so we hung out for individual performances (Mark of the year, rising star etc.) in lieu of team success.

A lot has changed in the past 8 years, and while there are other players who have played a part in that change (and a couple of very good coaches - a story for another thread!) the Gawn story is significant.  His dedication and drive, but (thinking back to individual honours) his selflessness stands out.  I am a believer in footy being ultimately pointless, except as an arena in which we create a crucible in which to see a person's character.  Time and time again Max has been in the crucible and carried a whole group of players with him - it just so happens these are 'our' players and we should be darn (new to this forum, can I say "darn"?) glad to have followed this team at this time!

Two years, five years, ten years... a once in a lifetime talent and leader is something to celebrate.

*don't look up details - they are dire!

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
