Be hard for a tall at Casey with the severe lack of midfielders they have.  We have no quality ball users in our AFL side could just imagine how hard it would be at VFL playing as a key position player.

So true drdrake now is the time to clear list spots and bring in mids, mids and more mids plus a Ruck.

I've watched a few VFL games & he has shown SFA

Same report that I heard from another on-looker.  eg: 'Looks the goods if trained, closely coached, was braver and had more confidence - any confidence - developing confidence - and took some initiative when it mattered'.

He's going better than Jefferson was at the same stage - and now he's Demonland's new darling.
Needs to be give more than a couple of months to prove himself.

Just here to remind the Demonland list managers who wrote off, amongst others, Judd McVee and oh yeah Christian Norm Smith Petracca off in their first year.

Just FFS give someone more than 8 weeks to prove their worth? How were you performing 8 weeks into your first grown up job? I bet not great.

Mind blowing stupidity on this site sometimes I swear.

Petracca written off early days!? That blows my mind!  Anyone with basic understanding of football would know he was going to be a star, it just was a matter of when.

No he isn't.

I can't recall anyone whether that's media or supporter base writing Petracca off early days.

The moment he made his debut he looked like a player with immense talent.

Same as I always am, terribly.

I can’t be performance managed out if I’ve never performed in the first place.

The midseason draft is a bit of a strange one, as it's not uncommon for players to be delisted only a couple of months after they were taken. Happens right across the league. I would therefore not be surprised either way at the end of the year. I understand the need for patience, but his lack of form at Casey may also mark his cards earlier than some are expecting.

I reckon read somewhere that he was only on a 6 month contract??

Yes you do. He was called fat and lazy and a front runner on Demonland. He always had the talent but in the early days his application wasn’t always the best and many on Demonland said he was not going to make it.
He also got bashed for doing his knee playing basketball.

Yeah, I can't recall media or fanbase writing him off either. That reply is based on @Jaded No More's post, I wasn't on here back then anyway, so I wouldn't know better, haha.

Let's just cool the jets on bashing everyone on DL with slightly critical views to a bloody pulp like we always do for a second..

Personally, I never said I wasn't going to give the kid a chance. On pure face value I was excited having a project tall on the list. I still have hopes for Luker and am willing to give the time but as most 18 y.o talls are he's got a bit of a way to go. I did think it was strange to take one in the mid-season draft when another type could have helped us in our finals charge. Remember that? Remember when we started 5-2 and anyone who didn't believe we were a challenger was then bashed for not being positive about our chances? Well some of us wanted to top up the list for a tilt at things, not a rebuild. But at least you've got a new thing to get angry at people about.

While we're at it can we simmer on this fish out of water talk? He's come from Subi in the WAFL which is comparable in competition to VFL. Let's not pretend that he was plucked out of the Mananatang 3rds and dropped into Casey with culture shock akin to arriving at Bangkok airport.

Seriously, if people here aren't losing their absolute minds over some stupid thing in the news they can't control they're happy to just take fire at anything. Enjoy the footy all!

agree with all this but i'm pretty sure he did his acl on the training track

he broke his foot int he final stages of rehabbing from the knee knack, playing basketball in bare feet on a backyard court

Kentfield is a ‘big boy’ forward who does his best work when he can physically dominate opponents. These types of players usually take a lot of time because, no matter how big you are at 18, you can’t play like that against mature players until your body matures as well. It’s different for a key forward like Cadman etc who can rely on athleticism to get separation from his opponent. He’s much more akin, in style, to Tom Hawkins where he’ll likely have a long term strength advantage over opponents but it will take time until that eventuates. Until then you’re likely to get good effort, small glimpses and inconsistency based on his match up. This is what we saw with Hawkins, who was a dominant junior and much more developed at the same age. Most of these types of players will require more development to be AFL players than athletic key forwards like, say, Jamarra or Cadman.

Judging this type of player based on two months is silly.

He did his knee at training

Look Im sure that Luker is a great kid and doing his very best .But that is not a basis for extending his contract .The club did not proceed with a view that he would be a slow burn otherwise they would have given him an 18 month contract rather than  6 month one .They preserved the option to offer an extension or delist Luker .Thats simply good football management .He ,contrary to what has been stated or at least implied here ,did not have big stats in WA and that trend sadly has continued at Casey. You cant expect a contract extension based on a hope for improvement that is unsupported by any evidence to date.If he is kept on the list that is one less spot available for someone else .

Fair points but there isn’t a problem for finding him a list spot as I expect a number of older players to be taken out of the list at seasons end - if we don’t see a pretty big refresh of this list we are in for an extended period of mediocrity imo

He has not shown much that is true - but he is a very young tall and we all know they take time - he has shown enough imo to warrant at least another season to deliver something

He may show more at training that the FD sees as potential - as usual I trust their judgement to make the right calls on players - having said that my faith has been sorely tested recently with some highly questionable trade decisions

More likely Farris-White gets delisted.

Same, same @The heart beats true. When I moved to part-time work from full time, it just ratified the existing arrangements.

oh and almost drowning!

I have no issue with the current impact of Kentfield. As has been alluded should be a long play. What i dont get is why we thought we had to jump at him in the mid season draft vs grab him with a mid to late pick in the end of season. We should have used the mid season for an emergency ruck (as we found was needed) or mature midfield depth.

I've heard Jason Taylor speak on this previously.

Pretty sure the concept is to get them in early into the program instead of waiting until the November draft.

Problem is, we only signed him to a 6 month contract, so maybe he may not exactly be in their long term sights as some think. Perhaps they are wanting to see whether he shows enough at VFL level.

I agree with you though, certainly missed the boat in bringing in a mature age ruckman.

It’s the players that nominate for either a 6 month or 18 month contract as part of entering the mid-season draft, not the clubs. The length of Kentfield’s contract is irrelevant to the club’s thoughts because Kentfield nominated for the draft with a 6 month contract.

Will be back in WA next year, I reckon. The MSD is a cruel system for the individuals involved, unless they're one out the box. He's the equivalent of a rookie pick who can't get near it in the seconds. They usually get chopped. He may be saved by significant off-field movements this year, the Smith situation (can we cut him?), and sympathy around not having a pre season.
