The game plan should be working but players are going long to a 1v2 or 3 & ignoring free players who could attack free space, this has been happening for the last 3 seasons, so who’s to blame, either Goodwin can’t fix it or our players are thickheads!

A little from column A and a little from column B

Could be that Goodwin can't fix it because our players just can't or won't change their ways

The first half was diabolical with 1 mark from 28 forward 50 entries

And just to rub it in Oliver & Petracca totally waste 2 more forward 50 entries late in the game with panic disposals

We had a real opportunity to win the game today but we handed the game to the Pies by not taking advantage of our opportunities to score (specifically our forward 50 entries)

That's on top of being largely wasteful against the Hawks & Saints ... use the ball properly and/or kick straight and we could have won our last 8 games

I feel we play a lot of games not to lose, as opposed to going on the offensive. That’s on Goody.

Thought similar today.
We're reactive rather than proactive.

I’d agree that player development isn’t exactly a strength of SG.

But thats HIS job!

Players are developing great under Goody. There is always going to be a few who don’t crack it but the amount of talent in the team that has gotten better over the years says it all. Bowey, Turner and Chandler are great examples atm.

Ok, but what of the many that have gone BACKWARDS??

Less of gone backwards

I don’t care what anyone says. Coaches have a huge say when it comes to to player recruitment and drafting anyone that thinks otherwise is delusional.

Melbourne have officially wasted the Best midfield we’ve had since the golden era of the 50s and 60s.

Because we’re too pig headed to recruit and or draft genuine forwards. There’s a reason our Fwd Line is [censored]. Because hardly any of them are natural forwards. Fristch is the only one & he has the composure & intensity of a local footballer.

Buckle in for the next 5-10 to watch other clubs with a brain utilise their asset's by supporting them, with a quality structure around them.

I've been critical of Goodwin, but he did plenty right yesterday to give us a chance of winning that game. Ultimately we weren't good enough to do so.

I will say that I think his management of our younger players has been really poor. Lindsay clearly needs a rest (probably should have been the St Kilda game), and arguably Langford as well. Windsor is horribly underdone and out of sorts, and needs a spell at Casey. Tholstrup has been played underdone, deservedly sent to Casey and then brought back without much justification. We've had Sharp and Jefferson sit out this week as emergencies for no reason, when getting game time was more important.

As others have mentioned earlier, today’s probably not the day to have a go at him. He had some tactical wins and put us in a genuine position to beat this year’s premiers (They’ll win it as they’ll leverage off the MCG home advantage in finals)

However, he’s the “CEO” of all on-field matters and the facts are we keep losing the games that go down to the wire and we keep losing games despite having more scoring shots.

Since the Alice Srings game against GWS in round 16 2023 we are 2-9 in games decided by 6 points or less. That is an absolutely deplorable stat.

Furthermore, in the goal kicking thread I listed a long list of losses since the 2022 Brisbane semi final whereby we’ve absolutely thrown games down the drain by outscoring the oppo but losing the game. Collingwood and Carlton featured heavily in this list and lo and behold, we’ve lost another game to Collingwood where we’ve had more scoring shots but lost. We ofcourse haven’t won a game this year where we’ve had less scoring shots.

It’s essentially coming up to three full seasons whereby these underrated but costly miscues keep on plaguing us as a football club. Unless these things start turning around, Goodwin will coach us to round 24 2026 at the latest, we shake hands and wish each other best.

I need to correct myself and adjust the W/L to 3-9 in 6 point margins or less from round 16 2023 to today.

I forgot to include the Brisbane 1 point win in round 18 2023.

No.

The Collingwood side benefit from a little more class in their top end and a little more nous with their experienced guys but they’re absolutely more well drilled.

They win some, they manage others and they lose few.

If goody was a great coach, this could also be his trademark but it isn’t. His trademark sat around a game plan but it hasn’t evolved or adapted since he came a head coach.

I think it's more clear than ever that a new coach is needed with this team. When you see the list and talent and they way they can play and then lose games constantly over 3 years because we have no ideas going forward, you realise what could've been

Dont waste it now

Me thinks though that Kozzie resigning is the first clue that Goody will stick around

What absolute nonsense.

I've written about this in detail on another thread. The data couldn't be clearer. Of those that played in the '21 premiership - only three 'A-graders' have maintained their level of performance or improved (Max, JV and Kosi). The rest have flat-lined or gone backwards significantly. This is the main reason we sit 14th on the ladder.

We won a premiership by 74pts and ended up on top of the ladder, so no doubt players had career best years, this shouldn’t be the marker of a players upward directory. All the kids that played in that side are all better players now -Kosi, JV, Bowey, Rivers and Sparrow.

You are correct.

People who are happy with Kozzie's deal will need to accept that Goodwin is here for the duration.

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
