The AFL once again have their finger on the pulse with Katy Perry being confirmed for the GF.

Even if you like this sort of thing, she was popular over 10 years ago.  Her latest song has been panned, it's about women empowerment and was produced by a known ("alleged") rapist and predator. He was the guy Kesha brought to court

i never understand why we celebrate australia's greatest home-grown sporting spectacular with an overseas "big" name artist when we have local internationally-acclaimed artists of our own (and keep the money in the country).

something to do with a power complex in the afl hierarchy no doubt

Just give us the Boss playing Born to Run. I don’t care if he’s over 70 years old, he’s still the greatest 😬

I feel sorry for good Australian Bands I dare say Kate Perry has never seen an AFL game.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the AFL HQ executives are old enough that their kids were teens ten years ago.

Cultural cringe has already been used in this thread. It is interesting to see how it has evolved from 'nothing we do could ever compare to the sophistication of Europe' to 'nothing we do could ever compare to the tacky over-the-top flashiness of America'.

Honestly sometimes they give the impression of not knowing Australia exists.

It’s embarrassing that we have to have an international artist when there are so many great Aussie bands/artists. Truly embarrassing.

It’s like an event is devalued unless there’s an American big name headlining. Remember when Meryl Streep played Lindy Chamberlain while Australian actors weren’t even considered for the lead role? I thought those days were over. They should be.

Way to insult our homegrown talent, AFL.

There’s a photo of her on the AFL website holding up the footy. The expression is pretty much ‘wtf is this?’

But you can guarantee a media piece about "how tough and brave" the players are and her mind is blown.

You’re missing the point, though. They should source the talent for the AUSTRALIAN Football League here in Australia. There are overseas acts that I love but I’d be just as p****d off if the AFL paid them for the gig instead of an Australian act.

The way the AFL continually screws over grass-roots footy, it’s not the least bit surprising.

Nothing against Katy Perry, but her prime audience (at a guess) would be pre-teen girls.

Don’t think that quite aligns with those  that will be attending this years GF.

Exactly! They secure a well-known American regardless of the suitability of the music.

I’m not even sure who Katy Perry appeals to. The preteen fans when she was ‘relevant’ are now in their early- to mid-twenties.

One of the biggest fails was in 2015 when the British singer Ellie Goulding headlined. Totally unsuitable genre and sang way too softly. It was so cringe.

Half-time entertainment?

Bring back the long kicking competition and dogs* catching frisbees.

*Australian dogs, of course.

An interesting choice but ....

I actually feel a bit sorry for the AFL about the half time entertainment. For one I really don’t think we need anything, two virtually anyone they get doesn’t matter if their Australian or International will not get universal respect.

As a massive hip hop fan I reckon Kendrick Lamar would have been perfect this year.

Angry Anderson and the Batmobile was one of the greatest moments in sporting and music history. Period.

Yep, the infantilisation of popular culture is a thing. I could write far too much about it, but I’ll spare you all.

Surprisingly she has broad appeal amongst a lot of women

But surely we can do better.y bad I'm thinking Taylor Swift but I'll give that a pass.

Sadly for me it's hunters, Paul Kelly or the like.

According to the obviously AI generated promo video, Katy Perry is the "Telstra pre-game entertainment."

Well they’re not my cup of tea but I’d take them over an international act.

The thing is, it’s not as though they need a drawcard. The grand final is a sellout regardless of pregame and halftime entertainment, so why pay an exorbitant fee to an international act when you can have a local act for considerably less? And one whose music is appropriate to the occasion. The AFL are so out of touch. Perry would be rubbing her hands in glee.

The AFL is a political organisation in the entertainment business.

We have a core set of viewers who'll tune in anyway.

How do we get more viewers who wouldn't normally watch? Let's get a famous American artist who's on the slide who'll be a bit cheaper.

Paul Kelly, Mark Seymour, Mick Thomas, King Stingray, Amyl and the Sniffers, The Chats.

The grand final in Perth under lockdown put on a cracking mix of Australian music. Best pre match entertainment I can remember.

Nope, has to be a yank.

AC/DC anyone ?

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
