Any doctors in the house who can shed some light on whether the two medical events are related, or a completely unfortunate coincidence?

I’m a general surgeon. I don’t think this would be related, just bad luck.

At least we don't have to fear him missing games in 2025 with appendicitis.

Thanks for that

What’s the timeframe for recovery after an appendectomy?

Back in the early 70's  Jenkin the pies ruckman missed one game. Now with keyhole surgery I would not think it would be very long.

Will he be back for the grand final?

I was in hospital for appendectomy for a few days back in the mid 70s.

I find it best to consult the experts in cases like this.  The diagnosis is not encouraging, I'm afraid.

I think the link, if there is one, is that the spleen injury led to a "reset" of his immune system, e.g. he needs all his immunisations again, and maybe that increased the chance of appendicitis?

But obviously I have no actual idea.

The indirect connection is via the aspleendix nerve which may have been inflamed by Trac’s injury.

If it’s not a complicated case would usually go home after an overnight stay. Most of my patients aren’t elite athletes but for someone who is fit could usually play in a week or two. Obviously not a problem for Trac and they might be more cautious with things like antibiotics for longer given his spleen.

Any update on Trac?

Looks like he’s in Noosa on holidays at the moment.

You're right.

As bad as the situation seems we really have to embrace the potential positives to come out of it. One door closes another opens or some cliché line like that. Rivers has been thrown the keys and I for one am excited about an extended run through the middle. No doubt we'll see a lot more experiments in there, we lose a star but it's time to make a new one. Plenty to play for.

And thank you for using the term 'champing', the alternative does my head in.

One door closes another will slam you firmly in the face

Yes I doubt you could sprain you appendics

Hopefully he is recovering.  It was quite an ordeal. I thought he might get back to work with younger guys like Kolt on how to position himself and pass on his footy IQ. Or even in recruitment.  Imagine Trac and JT coming to meet you and your parents as part of the MFC recruitment.

Will be interesting to observe when Trac joina the rehab group. Monday will mark 7 weeks from the injury and the literature suggests 8 weeks from injury to return to play, with rest for the first 6 weeks. He won't be doing any form of training, not even jogging at this stage.

Once he's in the rehab group it should then be a matter of regaining fitness and conditioning. It will be interesting to see if we look to make finals and playing our best footy whether Trac will press his case for finals or whether the club puts him on ice for 2025.

Trac was on Nova this morning and will be back at the club tomorrow on light running duties. He wont be playing this year as he will be on non contact duties until October.

Good timing. I was thinking that we hadn’t had an update and wondered if he was going ok.  Thanks for the update.

Yeah, we need to accept that Trac isn't going to be playing again this season. Even non-contact athletics would be pushing it for making a sufficient recovery to be both effective and safe. Entering a collision sport again within just a few months would be incuring a risk that is simply out of scale with anything we could hope to gain this season vs his football future, and anything football offers in general as far as Trac & family at a human level.

It was reported that Christian was resuming some light running earlier last week. Does anyone know if this actually happened?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
