We are so cooked losing Trac this year.

Aside from Max of all players Trac out his huge.

A year in which Sparrow is still treading water and hasn't stepped up still, Oliver down in form and Viney too. ....Trac out is huge.

I imagine his loss is felt by all and I wonder if we haven't lost a lot of collective motivation with him.

Viney has been fantastic,  I don't know what games you have been watching.

If there is any upside to this whole calamity of a season, it is that we will see each players resilience. Most people know that our team without Trac - even under the best of times - would make it nigh impossible to win a flag. Take Daicos out of Collingwood, Heeney out of Sydney and their chances effectively dive off a cliff as well.

However i want to see how each player responds to this, whether they 'give up' or rise to the occasion.  Given our position we can continue to lose games or actually turn things around. And to do so without Trac, to me, will actually show/tell me something about the ruthlessness and culture of our team.

Nothing can replace what Tracc brings week in, week out. But don’t underestimate the power of youth and exuberance. The kids are chock-full of *belief and confidence, despite our recent outings.

*”Belief and confidence” In the past fortnight I’ve heard both North and Hawthorn representatives cite this as the reason for their change in fortune.

Skills, footy nous, size, height, etc. of course influences a team’s performance. But the inclusion of young, spirited players champing at the bit to get out there is priceless.

Viney is down an average of five disposals per game compared to last year so yes he's down in form.

I'm not saying he's playing badly but he's not playing near the level he was last year. He really stepped up when Oliver was out but hasn't been as good this year.

Maybe he will step up again but he was much better last year.

Viney is having his worst season in years.

Sure he was excellent last week, but he’s otherwise been way down on what he’s capable of.

You're right.

As bad as the situation seems we really have to embrace the potential positives to come out of it. One door closes another opens or some cliché line like that. Rivers has been thrown the keys and I for one am excited about an extended run through the middle. No doubt we'll see a lot more experiments in there, we lose a star but it's time to make a new one. Plenty to play for.

And thank you for using the term 'champing', the alternative does my head in.

Wouldn't be surprised if the spud d** Cox ends up hurting Max, you know he is all about using knees.

I post this cos it exists, for people to get from it whatever they want, on club medical team diagnosing, media witch hunting, bountying, Cox, Collingwood, etc.

To be clear, after witnessing the Gus game and the overwhelming aggressive energy of the Collingwood masses that day, all Collingwoodness is dead to me.

A persistent mantra in my head is the 2000 Qualifying final vs Carlton with the Green/Bruce combo.

"...they need some marking forwards. Green has been the best of them! He's marked it again! Well, really, the only forward for them."

"The pressure's starting to show. Bruce! Bruce! Can he kick a goal! He went quickly - and he kicks the goal! They're in it now!"

"Knocked out of there by Leoncelli, across the goal face - Bruce! An unlikely hero! The rookie! The rookie!"

"A pair of unlikely heroes embrace. Green and Bruce."

Something I noticed when confirming that it was indeed the first season for both Bruce and Green was that in round 13 of 2000 we lost to Carlton by 98 points. So Freo had better watch out this year.

Sounds like a good measure for your sanity, El Diablo.

I am only aware of one colleague at my current employment that follows AFL (the sad reality of living and working in Sydney)...  Unfortunately, he prominently displays a Collingwood jumper on his office door.  I have yet to speak a word to him and have no plans to do so in future - and he appears to have taken the same approach, given my prominently displayed Melbourne scarves!  I instead pester my other colleagues with AFL chat (to their enduring despair haha)

There's another, depressingly impressive, AFL story going on this year that possibly makes your Sydney reality of only one colleague a blessing?

Going AFL media free, and now AFL colleague free, has made this season remarkably peaceful aside from what I willingly expose myself to on this fine site!  I do miss my AFL colleagues from my old workplace, but not enough to reawaken the group chat currently..

TY, I did indeed miss the reference haha

Yet it seems my colleagues surprisingly have missed it too!  It may just be that comically I somehow miss any AFL related conversation? There were a lot of people at my old workplace who would pretend occasionally to be a Swannies fan.  But here I never hear of it!  Lots of talk about golf though.

...which, back on topic, I guess/hope Tracc will be able to get into well before he's ready for footy (can't remember if he's one of the Club's little-ball obsessives...)

I think his foot has been playing up all year. Haven’t hear anything but I suspect that is the case with how often he is been in the rehab group, wearing slippers to training etc.

Answers LOTS of questions. Good stuff.

From the Club, too, and nothing 'cagey' or 'vested' that I can see.

Liked the double positive of Melky's on-field return and Tracc taking his field-side place.

(Also relieved to here him saying 'Bella' instead of the awkward repeated 'my fiancée' in the AFL360 'interview' (I use the term parenthetically advisedly...)

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
