Grundy is an established AA ruck and arguably one of the best rucks in the league. He might even push AA selection this year. Crazy we got rid of him, crazy he ever even played at Casey, and crazy we never played him in finals, ESPECIALLY if our intent was to trade him. We might have gotten more for him. Instead we had Schache suit up 🤡

I hope DL’s have factored in that Reg Grundy may have revealed to the coach that he had an offer too good to turn down from Sydney. In that situation the coach may have opted to see what we had going forward. Not necessarily the best decision, but one that was focused on the horizon rather than the rear vision mirror

Does anyone know whether Petty prefers playing as a forward or in defence?

Lately he is performing like a man who would rather be on a beach in Honolulu than playing AFL football.

Maybe he and Goodwin are on different wavelengths.

I’ve never heard him say which he would prefer and I wouldn’t believe anyone… and I mean anyone… on here that claims to know what any player prefers/thinks/feels about anything.

He has foot injuries which are notoriously difficult to get over completely and I can only infer from his movements this year that he is:

Struggling to get across the ground

Is completely lost in the forward line

Is suffering from being bereft of confidence.

That is being as charitable as I can because my own personal speculation (which could absolutely be wrong) is that he has checked out and wants to go home as well as physically struggling for a few reasons.

If he and Goody were on different wavelengths, then playing a guy out of the position he wants to play, round after round, after he has offered basically nothing, says to me that the coach is choosing players illogically and inexplicably and I am EXTREMELY worried.

I don’t think that’s what’s happening, I reckon he’s got foot injuries (he moves like a freight liner) and he isn’t as invested.

Just my opinion.

Wouldn’t it be sensible to play him back into form right back where he belongs, where the Lever flies, over mountains high.

Or VFL and then back to seniors.

With his selection decisions, Goody's a maverick.

Can’t wait to the Kolt go again. Had a tough debut, like many before him. worked hard at Casey. Deserves another call up

Re Petty:  No-one's saying the situation is ideal, but he keeps getting a game because we have no other options. Why is that so hard to grasp?

He had a serious foot injury which meant that not only did he miss a lot of football/preseason, he's probably working through building confidence in his body again. Perhaps he'd be better off doing that at Casey, but then which big-bodied forward with a bit of aggression comes in? Crickets.

No point, moving him down back either, who does he replace? In spite of everything, Tom Mac has been doing (very) well down there, and you start robbing Peter to pay Paul.

But beyond all that and getting into the favourite Demonland pastime of speculating without any solid information to go on, I wonder if they don't keep playing him because they understand that if we are to have a realistic chance of going deep in finals we have to have an effective big-bodied forward alongside JVR. Petty isn't that guy at the moment, but he's the only person on the list who could be.

I guess Fullarton is worth rolling the dice on, though I'm aware that he hasn't been in great form either. If confidence in his body is the problem, Petty may regain that confidence more quickly in the VFL. Since he's picked though, I hope he takes 15 marks and kicks 5.

Did not realise its a night game. They picked the right year to do it!

When's the last time we played North at night? Brings back memories of the Friday night prelim

I don't get why people are saying who comes in for Petty. It doesn't have to be a tall. Tbh I'd prefer if we went smaller, Petty has been non competitive in most games, and I'm not talking kicks and marks, but he isn't tackling that well, his chasing is poor most of the game.

I would have preferred a smaller in for him. Just try something different instead of smacking your head against the wall.

Chances are Petty would prob benefit from a run in the twos instead of being spanked weekly

Finally someone has given a plausible explanation for Grundy not being selected. Not selecting him for any other reason doesn’t/ didn’t make sense. It’s probably what WCW has been hinting at all along.

The problem is, Petty isn't an AFL forward and never will be. He needs to go back to defence where he excels in reading the play and is very serviceable defender. He also looks so disinterested it isn't funny.

100% agree.

Wonder if they will play TMac forward this week?

Let's stop with the TMac forward stuff. He is cooked as a forward, with many posters here reporting he has admitted to it himself. The only reason his career is alive is due to the move back, and he has been one of the few shining lights this season.

Unless the suggesting is that we actively tank.

Do you think he could get one goal in about 5 games? Then no problem.

Or another idea, lets not play Turner as a defensive forward and give that role to Petty until he builds confidence and form.  Not sure both fit in the forward line with Fritsch and JVR anyway. Oh, and perhaps give Petty a few runs in the ruck instead of JVR to allow him to get involved in the contest. JVR does a bloody good job as a chop out ruck, seems to time his taps very well (top of his leap) but always nervous seeing him contesting the ruck contests at his age, and at 194cm he's undersized (but he does compete very well in there!)

As good as TMac has been, has that been at the cost of Tomlinson and Turner's development in our seniors as defensive key posts. I'm not complaining, but in a couple of years time TMac will likely be retired.

Saw we are mentioned as being interested in Josh Battle recently, so thats potentially another key back if he agrees.

I don't see either as forwards. A defensive forward is a negative move IMO, we have what, 2-3 of them. What we need are real forwards with forward craft, make the opposition chase us, not the other way around.

I see Turner as a Lever replacement, Petty quite possible a May replacement. That's where they are best. Unsure if Petty will even stay at the Dees though.

I'm still not sold on JVR yet like many others. Goes missing for large periods in game. However is still only a kid so I will remain patient. We are asking a lot of him.

Oh cmon you’re comparing Petty to Oliver!!!!

Oliver is a least having a crack & has a few more credits over the years

Get real!

Oliver’s form is terrible, he’s also stuck in his grab and dump kick mode. He’s lost his spacial awareness. Of course I wouldn’t drop him. In just the same way I wouldn’t drop Petty. Petty has past good form whereas his possible replacement in Fullarton has none. He was bought in as a break glass in emergency and that means multiple injuries of key talls for him to get a game.

Personally I hope Petty signs a contract soon and goes back to defence, in time as Mays replacement. The same way I hope Turner becomes Lever’s replacement down the track. Dropping Petty achieves nothing for us.

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
