Disco has been trialled as a forward in a handful of games. He has had one good showing in that role and a few quiet matches.

Both Petty and Disco exploded in a new position against the Tiges, wish we could play them every week. We'd be unstoppable.

I missed what happened to JVR?

This is pretty much a game to ensure we stay in the race for the top four.

We have no 'genuine natural' forwards in any real form bar Fritta (2.5 goals per game in 24) & Kozzy and Kozzy's being used substantially in the mid field to give us some drive out of there of late (1.7 goals per game... nb given his minutes in the middle).

Besides Tracc spending significant minutes forward or getting away from the oppo out the front of CBs and scoring (1.2 goals a game).

Then the occasional (every other match) goal from Viney (0.6), our other 'regular' genuine mids generally don't score goals.

Sparrow 0.3

Clarry 1 goal in 11 matches

You then have...

An under done out-of-form Petty potentially carrying a niggle and who's probably going to also be asked to relieve Max in the middle for 12% or so of CBAs.

He's also struggled to do what he's supposed to do.  Having only scored 2 goals in 9 matches, averaging a whopping 0.2 goals a match so far.

That's on track for one goal every 5 matches at this point.  Name me another team, bar North and/or the Eagles, that would keep playing someone so out of form for this many weeks here?

An under done Smacca who may or may not comtribute.

And Chin, who while i love his scrapping ability and pressure side at ground level, is also a hit and miss prospect in front of the sticks, averaging less than a goal a game so far in 24 (0.9)

Then there's the occasional cameo from Nibbla averaging 0.6 goals per match.  Again that's approx 1 goal every other game.

I know we're a defensive side and usually keep teams to lowish scores but i'm strugglimg to see how we kick a winning score here against decent oppo (Freo being one of those) or better opponents from here, bar some sort of miracle from Petty, Brown or Roo (1.3 goals)  / Melky on their returns.

Turner would probably need to kick at least two or more (if he plays) this week yes?  Possible but again an unreliable score source at this point.

Let's face it, we presently have a very uninspiring forward line in a talent/form 'genuine natural forward' sense where you can actually put your trust in them to score each week.  And potentiality to kick multiple goals on top, bar Fritta & Kozzy.

And no i'm not putting BBB in here as he is just too hit & miss as a week to week proposition at this stage of his career in terms of even making it on the park let alone scoring (1.2 goals on ave so far in 2024).

Our forward woes and ability to put goals on the board (against decent or better oppo) continues to be our Achilles heal 3 years on from 2021.

Thankfully Freo has averaged less points per game than dees…

AFL footy its a level playing field.

Greetings from the Alice, where it has rained for 24 hours, but has now stopped thankfully. No sign of the sun since Tuesday but the forecast says sunny both Sat and Sun.

Anyone know what the team is doing tomorrow? Captain's run? What time? Any info would be gratefully received.

On another note, I am dumbfounded that BBB is in the squad. Last time he played, it was excruciating to watch this once fine footballer on his last legs.

Concerned about this one. Dual ruck combo going to be a real challenge for Max particularly with no JVR. Think we need to put the clamps on Serong. Brayshaw damaging also but we not best advised to tag both. Our midfield has been struggling.

I’m worried how we handle Jackson as extra midfielder/going forward. He isn’t a one grab mark but he gets his own crumb and T-Mac and Thommo aren’t as strong on the ground as they are in the air.

Wasnt it last time he got the 3 votes?

Seems all our ex ruckmen grow another leg when playing against max

Now that JVR is out who is going to replace him in the ruck?

Petty, you know, that guy who replaced him in that role vs WC two weeks ago when he was out with concussion.

Turner selected over BBB.

Frederick back for Freo. They're fielding about as strong a side as they'd hope to unfortunately.

Turner in for Petty as the only change

Jvr not Petty . Our forward line is pretty bleak on paper. Fritta and kosi only proven regular goal kickers.

I had exactly the same thoughts. Darcy and Jackson vs Gawn solo is a big ask, even for the great man.

Now able to answer my own question - captain's run 1.00pm tomorrow at the ground. Will be there with bells on.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
