Come on a real contender doesn't lose this bad against a rebuilding team.

It's not the loss as much as it is the way we lost, which started at selection.

Collingwood and Brisbane lost to Hawthorn last year but I get your point

We're all hurting atm, don't add to it.

You're right. I should avoid commenting on losses until I calm down. Perhaps a good rule is to post no earlier than 24 hours after a loss. After a win - no limit...

oh dear lord, people are starting say we lost it at selection. you couldn’t make this up

Our Stars lost this. Viney Trac Clarry etc. Not the shuffling of the bottom six

The great myth. The list just isn't that good once you get past the stars - especially up forward. If we still had Jesse Hogan (for example) you might have a point, but we don't.

I don't know how much longer we need to lose games with the bottom 6-8 players being ineffectual for this to sink in on Demonland.

Our list isn't good enough to withstand our A-graders being down.

But if we can't stop West Coast, a mid-table side at best (and still probably a bottom 4 side) from scoring 105 points whilst holding us to only 70, something isn't right.

Incredibly insightful

Dont know what to make of that, sees like we need a reset year as some are either past it or not quite ready for this level.

Lamb said the same garbage about Grundy and Hunter. And then we re-sign Schache.

Our list management has been pathetic since we won the flag. Rehashing rejects from other clubs, and lose Bedford and JJ due to lack of game time. And when you look at Casey, there's virtually no depth.

I understand that, and sorry you had to endure the dark years.

But with this list straight sets exits two years in a row is mediocre tbh.

GWS and Carlton have better weapons up forward unfortunately. And I am afraid that maybe even better coaching.

top 4 in 3 years straight is far from mediocre. in fact it’s the most consistent home and away team over 3 years

We lost to a team that has only won 7 games in 3 years

Hang your heads in shame

Goodwin and the selection committee should resign

The selection of Brown was ridiculous.
With Van Rooyen out, they were down not only a Key Forward but also their relieve ruck.

Clearly Brown was not going to fill both roles.

They had the chance to try Fullarton in the role they brought him to the club for, but opted not to.

Arrogant or incompetent or weak decision.

Harley Reid took more steps than the Crows player yesterday. Totally inconsistent umpiring.

Gee that must have lost us the game. Get over it will you!!

I get the frustration! That was as weak a performance I’ve seen from us for years. I kept waiting for the response, and we just looked like we couldn’t be bothered.

Let’s see where we sit in a month. Long way to go for us yet.

Too true. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

I think I said most/all of this in my post.

The point I am making in addition to this is that West Coast aren't as bad as many on here seem to think. If you think they are the 2022-23 West Coast you aren't watching 2024 football. As I said in my post, they are still a bottom 4 side, mid-table at best, but bottom 4 sides beat good sides most years (Hawthorn beat Collingwood and Brisbane last year).

But as you say, it's how we lost - 25 scoring shots and 105 points conceded, beaten in the middle again, and key forwards who can't impact the game.

This. Show me a more dominant finals performance this decade from any other team!
2021 was a brilliant, well deserved flag in a FULL SEASON, played under duress away from home.
There is no goddamn * against that flag!

And we’ve backed it up with 2 top 4 finishes since.

This, and the only * season was 2020.

But of course all those supportes from other clubs trying to disregard our premiership year, are just jealous and wish they had won it themselves.

2021 feels more and more like a lucky flag in an asterisk* year.

We couldn't win a final in 22 or 23 and this team is far worse.

Will be years before we contend again.

Don’t buy into that asterisk rubbish, any team would’ve taken a flag that year and be lauding it over everyone. We were the best team in it that year by far and smashed all comers.

Should’ve won another one in 22 or 23 but now we look cooked. No depth and couldn’t get the key forward we needed.

Hard to fathom we not only lost to such a bad team, but got dominated in every facet of the game. That was as bad a loss as we've ever had under Goodwin. Our midfield is spluttering along. What has happened? Has Mcqualter derailed whatever synergy they used to have? Genuinely confused how one of the most dominant midfields this century has turned to rubbish with largely the same personnel on field.

Feels like maybe they have just hit a wall after 3 years at the very top, Oliver clearly down for obvious reasons, trac looks like he has got to big and lost some agility, viney just getting older and has begun the slow decline. Sparrow hasn’t really taken the next step and I don’t think anb is really a legitimate answer but tries his best and is fine to fill rotations on occasion

yeah i don’t know how we’ve managed without Bedfords 6 goals this year and his regular turnovers

Jordon is a good honest player and if he was still here would probably be plodding away on the wing instead of Billings but making little difference

Ok that sucked. We just didn’t have any legs. Couldn’t keep our shape. They had players out everywhere all game. Out worked and out classed.
Only thing I can think of is we thought this was a gimme and used the 10 day break as a tome to put in a big training load.
If we did it shows lack of respect to our opposition and we got it wrong big time.

Yes, blame it on training loads. [censored].

Look I'm not surprised we lost because this is what Melbourne do, but I'm more shocked by the margin

Its the way we lost 189.  Good teams go down in close matches fighting to the bitter end.  That win was far too easy by a bottom 4 club.

A fair amount of the game is played above the shoulders but you also can't afford to play so many who are nowhere near the level like Brown, Petty & Billings.

There were a few exceptions but in general we were also soft as butter tonight.

That's a hunger, want, fight issue and Goodwin has a real problem here after tonight.  If he thinks you can just hit the track harder and solve these issues he'll need to think again.

Some serious soul searching needed behind closed doors as to who's up for the fight from here.

Goodwin will need to revisit his end of 2020 mantra of the club becoming more ruthless as we are a shadow of 2021 right now.

Oliver’s lack of preseason, Tracc down on midfield form and Viney’s continue ball butchering makes our midfield unthreatening.

the selection committee also has much to answer for. Brown is washed. Billings is terrible. We left out Fullerton and Hunter. If you were ever going to try Fullerton this was the chance.

we now are without Lever next week. Langdon is at a wedding in London, supposedly:

A wedding? For real?

Our present ladder position is an accurate reflection of our season so far …… ie.  part of a pack of teams in a race to fill positions in the bottom half of the final eight.
Can we improve sufficiently to become a top four contender?  I think / hope so, but maybe that’s just blind faith.  It’s a fair way back, so we need to turn the ship around quickly.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
