His best trait is his handballing so maybe. But for such a little guy needs to improve core strength. More like Lachie Neale, Rory Laird, etc.

    He's competing with AMW Woey and now Tholstrup.

    There's no other midfielders at Casey should we lose an AFL mid so one can see the sense in the signing

    Shown glimpses at Casey in some games.  A few very good ones

    Hasn't really hit any heights on a consistent basis there though (so far).

    Showed a few signs (with hands) at senior level against the Swans in the opening round but outside of that didn't do enough in general and was subbed out with 42% game time for Billings.

    5 other senior appearances (including subbed into the Qualifying against the Pies) with little to no impact imv and couldn't retain his spot.

    Other than quick hands in congestion i just don't see any stand out weapons that sees him pushing out someone else (similar) at senior level in the near to medium term.

    That's not to say he won't make it.  Some players just take longer and he might become a special player.

    But why not just play him through to seasons end at Casey with the occasional foray into seniors (if earned).  See how he goes and revisit the contract then.

    Too soon to re-sign for mine.

    Recruiters have been wrong, getting Grundy, then letting him go….is absolutely a huge mistake IMO.

    I must say I haven’t seen much to rave about in his few games, and I doubt he would be a flight risk were the re signing left until he has had more opportunities to show his wares, but clearly those who see him all the time can envisage far more than me.  So, I am glad to leave it to the experts and good luck Bill. We should all get behind him.

    Laurie does have quick hands. I have seen him dish out some very sweet handballs in tight situations. 
    But he still needs to increase his speed around the ground and develop an endurance tank

    Bill has a few tricks in his bag but hasn't put them all on display on the big stage.

    Confidence is something he needs to build at Casey and then carry into the senior team.

    I know players like security but there has to be something positive about putting fringe players on shorter contracts. Gives them a sense of urgency.

    IMHO, Laurie has few weapons or rare qualities such as pace, size or tenacity that would justify such an early and substantial commitment.  His one wood is supposedly poise and being a good ball user, but I've seen very little of that at AFL level and you've got to actually get the ball to use it well.

    We've also got plenty of young mids his type, such as Bowey, McVee, Howes, Woewodin, Brown, Winsor, Chandler, Kossie, Rivers, Spargo, Sparrow and potentially Kolt, that all have better weapons and/or potential.

    If Laurie hasn't show something decent by half way to 3/4 the way through the season, we'd be far better off recruiting another key position type, where we have more of a need to develop depth and less young players at our disposal on our list.

    I respect JT's ability to pick winners, but surely the decision to retain Laurie is less in JT's remit and more in TL's.  I'd rather give JT the oppertunity to find a few raw key position types and stack our investment in that type of player in the next few years.  Similarly, I'd rather we'd gone way harder to keep Toby Bedford, but no use crying over spilt milk I guess I hope Laurrie does become an AFL standard player, because 6 years is a long time to invest in a solid VFL player, who sometimes plays a great game at that level.

    We've made some dumb list management decisions in recent years, but this is by far the worst. 

    Mediocre footballers should not be getting three years of contract security under any circumstances.

    Why the JT and TL protection racket? There have been some clangers. Laurie has not shown near enough to earn this in March. Often average at vfl level.

    Of course, it is not the $ itself, but the cap and the spot that is important.

    Hope I'm proved wrong.

    I rank him alongside Jefferson but at least with Jefferson if us doubters are proved wrong we will have something of real value. There are always lots of Lauries.

    Hasn't shown enough for me but the club obviously thinks he's worth it. And I'm starting to realise they get a lot more right than me and then some. Congratulations BL.

    Echo a lot of the thoughts here, hasn't really shown it at senior level yet and still some question marks about his best position.  Granted he hasn't had a consistent and solid run to show form, not sure he'll be getting that anytime soon. Has improved his engine but still uncertain on his weapons. At worst it is some versatile depth. Let's hope he proves the doubters wrong

    Not a huge fan of this, but I'll assume the FD knows something I don't know about Bill.

    Sounds like the FD really rate Bailey and want to see him continue to grow and improve.

    I'm happy with this as it ensures we have decent depth on the list and it also give Bailey the opportunity to just focus on footy without the worry about coming out of contract. Lets also not forget that he would be on a relatively low wage for an AFL player so wouldn't be taking much out of our salary cap.

    Our recruitment team has been one of the best performed for 10 years now, so anyone trying to call out our misses is taking the p i $ $

    In my opinion he is one of a few players we have that, should take a leaf out of the book that JV reads.  Or just take angry pills.

    sometimes there is just not enough tostesterone.

On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

    • REPORT: Hawthorn

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
