I think he is onto to something here, take the funds out of the clubs salary cap, but of the club that forced him into retirement and potentially long term injury. Now if that is not an incentive for clubs to behave better then nothing is.

It’s a joke because as we know Freo were coming hard at Gus with a long term deal as well. Most quality players in demand these days get long term deals. And none of them are immune from concussion. At any point any player on a long term deal could get knocked out by Maynard and be forced to medically retire. 

A club should not be scared to sign quality players to long term deals because the AFL is senseless enough to force them to pay the deal out under their cap, should a player be forced to medically retire. 
 

I wonder what would happen if heaven forbid a player on a long term deal was in a fatal or very serious car accident and could no longer play.

Yes, and also, if you have concussion a certain amount of times - are clubs then expected to request CT scans before contracts are ratified? A biopsy of the blood-brain barrier? And then do they get 50% of the contract due to the increased risk?

Knees can be tested and gambled on - heads are a couple of Brayden Maynard ‘smothers’ away from retirement…

His Brain 🧠 is very small

So are we likely to get an answer on the salary cap situation any time soon so we can start our list management strategies and potential targets to chase for next offseason? Or will the AFL keep us guessing til the last minute and pull a decision out of their [censored] which is their usual MO?

If it ended up coming out of our salary cap then this class action against the AFL makes a lot of sense. 

For protecting the head the AFL says 'meh'

I think Gus would ultimately make a great mid-field coach to replace Adam Yze. Should this be pursued by the powers-that-be in terms of encouragement, training courses etc

I don't ever recall him mentioning he had ambitions to coach. I know i used to see him a lot around my building working for co-tenant in the financial industry and he does have media appeal too... 'World is his oyster'  is not lost on him i suppose.

This is exactly the point that Robbo is missing in comparing a bung knee to concussion. Gus's decision was effectively made for him by medical experts, and we don't want either the AFL or the footy club concerned to attempt to exert influence on any such decision, given the invisible nature of the injury, based on commercial factors like carrying the impending retirement within a salary cap.
