I'm going to miss you Gus :(

The MFC curse leaves Tutenkahmen for dust. Has any club ever had such a shocking run of bad luck and disasters in 5 months.

The bad news just keeps on coming.

It never stops.

Maybe our plane will crash on the way to wet  Sidee.

All the best for Gus and his fiancee.

May not be the right time to bring this up but, are we getting compensations ala North? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Devastated.

He's also made the right decision.

So sad for Brayshaw.

He will be massively missed by us.

Wish u all the best Gus.

U were one of the best players in our 21 Premiership.

Absolutely shattered.

With this, we have lost one of those spirit of the club sort of players. You always know what you're getting with Gus, wherever he was asked to play. Uncompromised work ethic, super consistent and reliable. And a gentleman to boot. It's so sad his last game was the one that ultimately brought this about, but he leaves an impressive legacy, the 3Q in the GF, and is a premiership hero.

Not going to lie, the offseason drama, now this - we have a strong list and certainly some depth - and this creates an opportunity for somebody to step up - but gee with everything, the boys are either majorly distracted (which I worry about), or they use everything ton inspire/drive them to success and righting the wrongs of the last 2 years and making use of this list before it's gone.

We'll soon see which of the two it is...

Completely gutted though I’m proud of Gus to prioritise his health over the game he loves.

when was his last concussion? like 5 years ago?

if so Maynard has ended his career and cost him millions and put his long term health in jeopardy with zero punishment

im furious

Sue his and AFL's asses off!!

I'm devastated by this news. Gus is fantastic as a player, a clubman and a person. He is an immense loss to the game. 😪

A Melbourne Football Club immortal. Premiership player and lead-wresting 3rd-qtr clutch goal kicker.

I wish him every success and good health in life from here.

Devasted. Just Devasted.

BUT.

This is why we recruited Billings. And it gives us cap relief.

We should throw everything at Tim English.

I know this is frivolous, but does this also mean the end of Gus and Gawny?

Today’s news is just a [censored] sandwich. He’s a heart & soul player.

Performative.

The AFL put on a woeful case and then didn't appeal a ridiculously flawed decision.

The AFL needs to get up to date with all major world sports and implement an order off rule for serious violations. The pseudo legalistic AFL tribunal is an anachronism and time and time again we have seen high profile players from influential clubs get away with murder facilitated by legalistic mumbo jumbo. The system is set up to be scammed. This can be done by umpire consultation on field and off field with supplemented video evidence. The cynic in me believes the AFL only prefer the current system because it generates media attention to keep the game on the sports front pages just about every week.

Best call for his health and that is the most important thing.

People blaming Maynard, Unfortunately this was the last hit, but this has been a concern for a long time.  There were doubts a few years back he would play again, to get back, win a premiership was fantastic for him and the club.  He has been 1 more concussion off this outcome for a while, the hit was bad no question but you can't put this retirement solely on that hit.

I'm sure Gus will be in the media, such a well spoken young man, we hope making this call now will limit any on going effects

Great decision young man!

Articulate, intelligent, funny and very amiable...a long, long career awaits in footy media

Oh! And bloody good footballer too!

Good luck

What a brilliant heart and soul player Gus has been for us. Putting aside the impact this will have on the team on field, off field his presence will be irreplaceable.

I don't think I will ever get over the Maynard incident. It still burns in my stomach, and my interest in football has not been the same since. I hope there is a special place waiting in hell for him.

Washing Gus all the very best. He has a bright and long future ahead and he deserves to live out his life with a healthy body and mind.

Thank you for always putting our club first. It's time you put your health first now.

Gutted but glad Gus has made the call. I couldn’t stand seeing him get concussed again, go well young man and thank you for the great contribution you have made

I was absolutely filthy at the time, times it by 10 now.

Remember the so called "expert" and his/her blatant ignorance of physics? 😡😡

We love you and will deeply miss you Gus.

This off season can go and get forked.

Can’t but think he’s made the right call. Farewell at our first home game I imagine

We remain MFC, not a club who resorts to borderline tactics to win games.

shocking news that we lost a player with great ability, but great news for Angus future health. Hopefully now he can fully recover and go on to another chapter in life. I for one would have hated to see he playing well but always being one knock away from serious health concerns.

well done Angus, premiership player, serious fan favourite, players player and a player who lived up to his early draft pick placing.

Gus, thankyou for the dedication and efforts and well deserved rewards. You deserved far more than this and I can't imagine how gut wrenching that decision must have been.

You leave the field with aplomb. Wish you all the very best for wherever your path takes you.

But....bugger bugger bugger

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
