We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Without being privey to his work out volumes and numbers, he wouldn't be that far off IMO.

The only thing he might be behind in is the agility training side of things throught agility ladders and poles which isn't a great deal off.

At the end of the day it's when Clarry feels ready.

'agility ladders and Poles'? Tell him to give up on conquering Poles - I'm married to one...

While our centre square mids are a lock (clarry being available) - i feel like coming into this season, neither Langdon or Hunter are automatic selections on the wings.

Based on what people reported, it sounds like Windsor and Billings are the primary competitors for these spots, with Windsor showing good signs but inexperience (to be expected) - and Billings impressing, particularly with his disposal.

Is there anyone else observers have seen on the wing that could also be included in the selection mix (i thought Howes was selected as a wing but seems to be trialling at half back).

Given Hunter has been sidelined with a calf, will have given Billings more opportunities.

Interested to hear what people think on who we play on the wing - but it could be the case by the end of the season, if Windsor and Billings stay fit, they might have bumped Langdon or Hunter down to the twos.

Cheers

Re:Fullerton injury,  the training session today went for over 3 hours.  Fullerton appeared to damage it right at the end of it which is shocking luck. Whether it happened abruptly or not we don’t know, but to me that was a bit of mismanagement of his running loads.

I'm sure the club will contact you re Fullerton for your experience on these matter....

Have noted before that May glides seemingly effortless. Amazing for such a big unit.

Surely you’d have to have intimate knowledge of his running loads over weeks/months and his body to make that assessment?

I would be shocked if Langdon/Hunter aren’t our preferred wings by year end.

Partly because Goody is a creature of habit and is shy to make radical change, partly because Langdon and Hunter are the best two wingmen of those 4.

I’m guessing Windsor is earmarked for next season (or the following).

Billings the possible one to be challenging the incumbents but that’d surprise me as well.

I was just trying to report on the one individual training session from today compared to the rest of his preseason (without sugarcoating anything).

I liked this post - it’s a good reminder of how far we have come. Remember when Scully and Trenners were setting the standard in their first pre-season? It’s great that our very high draft picks aren’t the best 2 out there, unlike at the other clubs with top 10 picks 😀

It happened at the end of a 3 hour session. That to me suggests it was fatigue based. I’m no expert so could be totally wrong.

A big thanks to all reporters, special comments and posters a great cross section of DL. Also great that so many supporters turned up to watch the boys on Australia Day PH and of course Demonland for compilation of al reports got to read through them again when we finally arrived home last night, we had a great day out.

I actually agree that it would go against the logic of selection under Goodwin, and that right now Hunter and Langdon are proven performers. However, and while I'm a big fan, Langdon was completely dominated by Sidebottom in the Qualifying Final - so much so Hunter had to be moved onto his wing.

I thought Hunter actually had a good finals series - but was interested to see how low he finished in the B&F.

I just wonder if the club feels that some experimentation is warranted - especially if Langdon and Hunter aren't at their very best.

Either way - having genuine competition for those spots can only be a good thing.

It is interesting that you have espoused the theory of certain peevish coaches that fatique causes injury.  They want more interchanges and/or shorter quarters.  My anecdotal recollection is that ACL injuries happens in no particular quarter.  Anyone out there sitting on a million dollar report?

Goodwin backs in his proven players to a point and puts team synergy above most but he is also known to make a tweak between seasons and make change at a point. The B&F votes of Langdon and Hunter second half of the year show they were not meeting expectations. This year more so than others we are likely to be in a position where players who have done their VFL apprenticeship force their way in and players will need to give way. Billing’s and McAdam are also likely to be given ample oppportunity. Some of this opportunity will be created by the retirement of Hibberd and transition out of some of our depth in Harmes and Jordon. However we could be in a position this year where the form of Turner, Howes, Laurie, Woewodin demands opportunity. I think we learnt our lesson with Bedfords departure that sometimes form needs to outweigh loyalty for your ongoing improvement and list management.

According to the AFL website, it happened at the end of a 1 hour match sim, in a marking contest.

Be still my beating heart.

I went to training last Wednesday, and a highlight was may running with the flight of the ball to brilliantly spoil an ANB mark - but Nibbla kept his feet (and May did not), scooped up the lose ball, ran 10 metres and weighted a beautiful, pinpoint kick to  Spargs (or Laurie?) who strolled into an open goal.

Brilliant kicking and decision making skills, so no change there.

I had the same thought.

Give he played almost every game, and i though was really good in the first half of the season i wonder if that points to him not always carrying out roles goody had given him?

He was a solid rather than spectacular & has lost yard of pace. Sometimes fails to take the first(and obvious) option & tries to be too cute. His underground handballs are a case in point.

Hunter needs to be replaced by a raking kick with pace and neat skills.....Windsor? but can he get there this year? Do you try Bowey, Billings or even Spargo on the wing? Does Rivers go there? Wasn't Howes next in line? This is not to criticise Hunter but we need an upgrade, especially as Langdon has dropped off/been found out/is very beatable. What was once a massive strength of ours feels like we've been comfortably overtaken by others.

I would have any of those players you mention on the wing before Hunter. Agree with you our wing positions are a weakness. I hope Hunter doesn’t play many games and I won’t be surprised if Langdon gets dropped at some point this season. I think we have other players who can be upgrades.

Or Goody is not happy with his disposal like yours truly.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
