Pretty sure they offered McAdam and the 1st round pick we traded away, ?14 (clearly we didn't rate the players likely to be available at that pick which probably ended up about pick 20). Hardly an offer you can't refuse.

crows were just setting the scene for a serious push probably end this year or next.

they dangled the big money to harry but never made a serious (commensurate with salary offered) trade offer to mfc.

now they think they can control the narrative all this year, building up the pressure.  the media obliged as usual.

Petty is a bloody good footballer so it’s a no brainer he’s still on the list. He’s contracted until the end of next season but we probably only have until half way through this season to make a call. If he can get over his injury concerns and gets back to playing some good footy we need to offer him a new contract which supersedes his current one in order to keep him.  If he can’t then he sees out his current one. Considering his age, talent and the fact he’s a key position premiership player (who played well in the finals) it’s madness to suggest we should of offloaded him at the end of last season.

When did he play forward vs Sydney and Richmond? If he did it was a very short spell and could hardly be judged as any time Was nowhere near a spell of more than 10mons if I am guessing. And when during those games.

He played most if not the entire game up forward against Sydney in round 3 and Richmond in round 6.

Some updates on the injury front

Melbourne defender Daniel Turner is set to miss a large portion of the 2024 season after suffering a stress fracture in his leg.

The Demons confirmed on Saturday that the 22-year-old will be sidelined for up to 12 weeks after sustaining the femur injury during the pre-season.

Turner has dealt with hand and facial injuries during his time with the Demons to play just three games over the past two seasons.

Melbourne football boss Alan Richardsonsaid the key defender's latest setback was an unfortunate result.

“Daniel has unfortunately sustained a stress fracture in his femur,” Richardson said in a club update.

“This will see him miss quite a significant block, with his return-to-play timeline being 10 to 12 weeks.

“While this news is really disappointing, we know the type of person and athlete Daniel is, and expect him to attack his rehab with a positive and determined mindset over the coming weeks.”

Fellow key position Demon Harrison Pettywill miss his club's first pre-season meeting with Richmond this weekend due to toe soreness.

The new ailment will keep Petty sidelined for the time being, with the club hopeful the defender-turned-forward can be fit prior to their Opening Round clash with Sydney.

“Harrison has been experiencing some soreness in his toe, which has meant he hasn't been able to build up his training loads as we would've liked,” Richardson added.

“He won't play on Sunday, but we will continue to monitor him in the lead up to our practice match against Carlton.”

New recruit Shane McAdam remains sidelined with a calf issue he recently sustained at training, with the Demons having to rule out the medium-sized forward for Sunday's clash at Casey Fields as well.

Richardson said the club will be patient in their approach with McAdam.

“Shane has some ongoing tightness in his calf, and we have made the decision to take a conservative approach,” Richardson said.

“He is going to be such an important player for us, so we don't want to be risking anything at this stage of the pre-season.”

Melbourne have also noted that Angus Brayshaw (illness), Taj Woewodin(concussion) and Andy Moniz-Wakefield(thigh) won't feature in Sunday's match simulation.

The Demons are already without the likes of Ben Brown (knee) and Tom Fullarton(hamstring) for the start of the 2024 season.

Melbourne host Richmond at Casey Fields on Sunday morning before a second pre-season match with Carlton.

Their first game proper of 2024 will come at the SCG on Thursday, March 7 against the Swans.

I haven't read or heard either of those statements, is this on the demonland forum? Or other bogus media? Just genuinely curious.

I've heard him referred as a premiership player and I suppose in my eyes that makes him a champion of sorts.

He is a reliable key backman who has been moved forward and showed very positive signs in a small sample size. He could, IF he can find some consistency with his fitness be the key forward that could make a huge difference to this side. Far too many 'IF's' for my liking, but definitely no unequivocal statements.

Well I went to that Swans game  and not my understanding Will watch the replay. Thanks

Also  don’t reckon Harry was up forward when Rooi kicked his 3 goals in the last quarter on Anzac Eve.

If he helps us win the flag this year he can go to Adelaide for free

It isn't so much about us getting value, as making sure the Crows continue to suffer forever.

The full list of Demons missing from today’s scratch match

Angus Brayshaw - illness
Ben Brown - knee
Tom Fullarton - hamstring
Lachie Hunter - calf
Shane McAdam - calf
Tom McDonald - calf
Jake Melksham - knee
Andy Moniz-Wakefield - thigh
Harrison Petty - toe
Joel Smith - suspension
Charlie Spargo - Achilles
Daniel Turner - stress fracture femur
Taj Woewodin - concussion

So, with the exception of Joel Smith, I guess that makes up our first proper injury list for 2024.

Having both tmac and Ben brown on the list together is a list management [censored] up.

Brayshaw probably the flu, just petty, McAdam and Spargo regulars in that list. Rest lucky to get a game when fit.

You are just old... Both will play 2 games each if lucky and at least we could have recruited someone we could develop. So what if we pay them out. The point is neither will do much anyhow.

If someone had given me the choice at the end of 2020 to have Brown and Tmac on our list for 4 more years but we would get one flag I would've taken it in a heartbeat.

We are talking 2024. Both should have been nudged to the door at the end of last year.

I’m not sure we can carry Ben Brown. I am hopeful he can make a difference in 2024. He’s an accurate kick and good on the lead.  But his degenerative knee is causing him serious ongoing issues.

Big fan but not sure he should have continued on into 24.

Obviously im not privy to his situation but it would appear his ailment is resulting in a one step forward, 2 steps back result almost every time he hits the track.

And even when he does make it back he seems to be mostly in the rehab group in the last 6 months or so if my memory serves me correctly.

He's been a solid contributor and helped us to break the drought but all the signs are there.

A hard but early decision is the most likely and appropriate outcome for everyone IF he fails to come back strongly from surgery or has even one more significant set back.

Please tell  me how you would have “nudged” both to the door when both are still contracted.

The overall consequence of retaining both on the list was exacerbated by the fact that we then had to effectively give draft picks 28 and 36 to the Suns to get list space.

These picks are in the range that got us Rivers Petty Fritsch Spargo and Howes so they can be important .I accept that we moved from  pick14 to 11 and took Tholstrup , But he was a bolter and there was nothing to indicate he would'nt have been available at 14 .

I found the swap perplexing .

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
