North Melbourne offered up two picks in the teens, Essendon was willing to part with its future first-rounder or picks 9 and 31, Hawthorn was willing to trade its future first and West Coast had its coveted 2024 first dangling. But Adelaide's offer of picks 10, 14 and a future second-rounder trumped the lot.

Tex is turning 34 in 2024 - so assume they'll be knocking on the door again.

I find it extraordinary that we haven't used a top 20 pick on a midfielder for 8 years now. Even more so given the issues around Brayshaw, Oliver and Viney.

What's the plan if we lose a couple of midfielders for prolonged periods next year? Are we going to get Spargo to sit on Laurie's shoulders and see if they can reach Bontempelli's shoulders?

Essendon didn't trump Geelong for Caddy it was other clubs that had offers to Geelong. Essendon's was the best offer.

@poita here are our picks for the last 8 year, those are the years you say we haven't picked a genuine mid in the top 20, and I agree, we haven't.  I've also gone through and looked at which mids were available at our picks who you could suggest would have been better pics than who we took.  I may have missed some but apart from last year, and it's far too early to tell if we missed someone good, I can't see anything to criticize unless you want to argue Serong over Jackson.  

Did you do your research before you made your comment?  If so, who would you rather us take?

Looking at last night, the boys taken by all clubs looked physically ready to play AFL, big shoulders, physically developed young men.

What an advantage the Northern Academies have, you can bring unlimited 12 to 15 year olds in give them elite training and get priority access to them.

I didn’t say Bombers trumped Cats for Caddy, I said Cats bluffed Bombers into giving them pick 31, for the player they weren’t taking anyway, with the pick before the Bombers.

If Essendon didnt give pick 31 another club would have done a deal with the cats. Ess had to give that pick or another club would have done a similar the deal with Gee.  Gee had something they didnt want and took offers for the pick and sold it to Ess. Ess wasnt the only club buying.  there was no bluff

My impression is that assuming Hore and Brown basically means we have just one spot left, and that if Brown is bid on in the main draft then that last spot has to be a rookie listing?

Really like the way Edwards moves, but aside from Kynan Brown we ain't doing anything else.

Fair enough, there might or might not have been a bluff, but Cats needed their pick, or the next one, if Bombers took Caddy, to ensure they got O'Sullivan.

Therefore I don't think Cats were ever trading for any later pick.

It was the next pick or nothing, knowing Bombers wanted Caddy.

That is where the bluff came in imo.

Anyway, I think we both agree that the Cats picked up 31 as a bonus, for still getting the player they obviously wanted, O'Sullivan.

Yes I’d like another extra list spot but feel like it’s fully loaded.  Only young Brown and Hore likely to be added.  
We are carrying Tmcd and BBB more due to contracts held than likely impact at this time. Hope I’m proven wrong.  Look at Petty and JVR as starting key forwards in 2024.  TMCD and BBB are in with Schache & Fullerton,  as plan B key forwards (Jefferson still under development in 2024).

Geelong chose 11 and 31 over the Eagles first (and other swaps surely)

Northern academy rules are different to NGA rules.

It’s rubbish, but the NGA is a joke, the occasional light training run and that’s about it. Northern academies do actually develop players (not that they should result in so many draft benefits).

Gold Coast and GWS don't have access to Father/Son picks like every other club. Given the number of players that these clubs seem to lose due to the "go home" factor, I have no issue with the academy picks.

GC and GWS have access to all sons of fathers north of the border. 😳
