I do hope the Collingwood childrens' farm is still running - - somewhere local for KT to hone his skills.

Maybe a farm out Casey way for him...

There’s soemthing really heartwarming in knowing the Eagles weren’t able to anything else other than use pick 1.

Yes, have a reasonable degree of satisfaction about this as well.  Eagles backed themselves in on Reid, but wonder how much was driven by hubris and how convinced they were that they'd be able to do deals for additional first rounders whilst taking Reid as well.

They've staked a good part of their rebuild on Reid now.  Whether they rightfully stuck to their convictions or were just plain stubborn/arrogant in not maximising the return for pick one, time will tell. I do heavily suspect the latter will be borne out.

The AFL, like God, moves in mysterious ways.

GC have special AFL sanction to take their players in the top 40. If they have the points .

Think all Northern Acadamies ( NSW and QLD) have these AFL loopholes.

Got to worry about the kid not wanting to come down for the presentation. Probably just shy and what not but still.

Ffs it’s been widely reported he wanted to be with family and there was logistical issues with family members travelling over from regional WA. We’re in the beginning of our harvest in WA which also would have played a part, but let’s let MFCSS override several legitimate reasons

I like our two picks. Sometimes as a supporter it is a case of distilling down who you don't like. I have reservations over Sanders (lack of explosive pace), Caddy (in between size for key forward), Curtin (a tall flanker who didn't impress me in Colts GF), O'Sullivan (thrashed by Croft in championships).

Curtin did his hammy in the Colts GF and played out the game, but he ain’t one of us so we welcome Caleb and Koltyn

Yep agree he’s going to be a gun and whilst I don’t think they’re as bad as many think I’m also aware their potential to move up the ladder slightly next season is based on getting good seasons out of McGovern, Yeo, Darling, Barrass and Allen. 3 of those have one good season left in them. I really rate Hewitt and Ginbey is a really good culture maker with Long showing snippets of talent, but they really need to increase the amount of good quality young players coming through

Our list management team have a great track record so I have a general sense of calm about Windsor and Tholstrup. Neither of them light my fire, but the pace and kicking of Windsor do stand out. I can't see either of them getting a senior game in 2024, but Windsor would make a perfect wingman if he can get some size on him.

For many of the tall forward options, it is so hard to tell, but in the highlights shown many of them were not single grab marks. A fair bit of two-touches going on. As for the general pool of draftees, apart from Reid, McKercher is the one who stands out with his pace, power and kicking.

From here it is down to the club's development program (ours is up with the best now, and wow is that a change!) and the individual player taking on the hard work and sacrifice required for elite sport.

We really do have a bundle of talent at Casey now - pressure is on for almost every spot.

I would love to know the background to WC attempts to get the Curtin pick from GWS.

Also I wonder if getting Curtin may temper Crows efforts to get Petty.

They now have Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Tex and Himmelberg with a few talls up back as well.

Cal usually does a write up of all the trades that fell through and who clubs were targeting a couple days after the draft.

He mentioned on his recap video that we had a crack at Roos pick 4 for Duursma and Hawks pick 5 for Watson. Would also be curious to see if we made a significant play for GWSs pick 7 and who we had in mind there.

So glad we are traded away a heap of draft capital to get mid-size forward number 20 for our list. Kolton might become a great player, but positionally it is the absolute lowest priority that we needed to address.

I find it extraordinary that we haven't used a top 20 pick on a midfielder for 8 years now. Even more so given the issues around Brayshaw, Oliver and Viney.

What's the plan if we lose a couple of midfielders for prolonged periods next year? Are we going to get Spargo to sit on Laurie's shoulders and see if they can reach Bontempelli's shoulders?

Cats got 31 for nothing, swapping picks with Bombers, knowing they wanted Caddy, when Cats obviously wanted O’Sulliivan.

Poor intel and card playing by Dodoro, who will no doubt gloat he got his player and won’t mention wasting 31.

Michael Gleeson in 'The Age'  and Jason Taylor have a different view.

Melbourne again traded into the draft and had picks at seven and 13. List manager Jason Taylor said it was serendipitous that the players they regarded as the best available talents at that pick also happened to fit needs they had on their list.

Koltyn Tholstrup is 186cm tall, a powerful forward who can run, while Caleb Windsor is an elite ball-user and very quick.

If you asked what type of players Melbourne needed right now they would be close to being it.

Which mid do you have in mind that we missed out on last night? Charlie Edwards was the only one selected after our pick at 7 all the way through to 29 and he went at 21.

But do we have any vacancies on the list?  I understood we are at capacity.  Stand to be corrected.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we traded out pick 42 which was a live pick. Maybe someone is getting upgraded from our rookie list.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    POSTGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.

    LAST DANCE by The Oracle

Forget the wishful thinking from Magpie fans who think their team can perform yet another miracle and somehow snatch a place in the 2024 finals series when their team takes on the Demons at the MCG on Friday night. It ain’t gunna happen. They can whistle Dixie through their non-existent front teeth but the fact of the matter is that both teams have run their race. The game is a dead rubber — for each of them, this will be the last dance of the season.  And given the history between the two

    RED FACED by Whispering Jack

The wind and the hot unseasonable temperatures together with lights turned on mid game at People First Stadium conspired to leave many Suns players and supporters red faced and gasping for air as the Demons proved a number of points on their way to a nine goal triumph on Saturday afternoon in the Carrara sunshine. Melbourne is the only non-Queensland team to taste victory at this venue in 2024. This surely leaves a number of journalists and media mavens red faced after they rushed to pass
