This is true, but the different ranking of players by clubs means that the benefit of moving up from #14 to #11 is less certain. We might have sold two second round picks to get the same player at #11 as we would have at #14.

Assuming we take 11 to the draft.

yes, but we also may know Sydney and St Kilda are after the same player that we are, it's just impossible to know. All we do know is that we generally do pretty well with this sort of thing so whether it's a further swap or a particular player or class of players, there is probably something else going on other than just upgrading by 3 spots for the sake of it.

In suppose you never want to see how the sausage is made.
I don't really understand the trade but will reserve judgment until the end of the trade period and draft.

Welcome Pick 11.

Chances are we weren't gonna use the second round picks anyway. We only have 3 picks. We have really only given away picks 14 and 27 for pick 11. Not bad gives us a chance to grab Reid.

If we end up with Reid, Fullarton, McAdam, Dogga jnr and Risk Andrew (maybe these two as rookies and upgrading Turner), then they can get there any way they like!

We have given up 14, 27 and 35 for 11

Sparrow at pick 27, Rivers at pick 32, Petty at 37 and ANB at 40 clearly shows we are hopeless with late 2nd early 3rd picks

If we dont grab Reid this deal is an absolute stinker.

Yeah don't know how I feel about this to be honest. Giving up a fair bit to just 3 spots down.

My first thought was that this is step one of a cunning plan.

My second thought was that perhaps,  outside of the top handful,  our recruitment team don't rate this draft crop

I don't like the strategy of burning second round picks to get up the draft order 3 places. I would prefer we trade our second rounders into the future.

Huh?

You don't want us trading 2nd rounders to move up to get a better young player for the future, but you do???

I would say we are selling the farm for pick 1 pick Reid, and pup brown and upgrade mcvee and Turner

I don't know why we even bother with early picks when we do so well in 25 - 40 range

I'm not very good at this but now we have so much cap space is GWS 7 in play as a salary dump for Haynes?  What would we have to give back?

Don't mind it if we're not going to use the picks. Gets the Dees to the absolute pointy end if there's particular kids they like in this draft, while our window is open now.

We'll get a second rounder back via Grundy.

Have 41 as a backstop to match a bid for Kynan Brown (or just grab him with this pick).

Aha @Slartibartfast, now you are becoming immersed in the dark arts of trade-week cobbling.

Has our drafting team lost their nerve?

I'm generally pro-Melbourne when it comes to this kind of stuff but this is truly bizarre. Something has to be cooking.

Let's say we wanted to move up three picks for a player at 11 by paying WAY overs, then we could have done it on draft night.

Makes zero sense otherwise.

On the face of it, 14, 27 and 35 for 11 looks just plain silly.

Trying to rationalise it, some possibilities;

- We've got no real interest in the available draftees from the second round and we're happy to catch sliders with our selections from 40 on.

- We have a very specific interest in one or more players who will be available at 11 but not 14.

- We have a very, very specific interest in something that can get done that needed 11, with a club that had no interest in second round picks.

Not interested in trading for Reid.

Having what could be the next Petracca on the list would be nice, but possibly having our current and future first round picks could set us up with the next Oliver, the next May and a KPF.

Suns were keen to lock away their draft capital early and North or Adelaide would have made compelling offers. We had to pay 'overs' to get it otherwise it would be in one of those clubs hands by the end of today.

Probably overthinking it, but we've grabbed the pick right before the Swans first rounder (12)...wonder if we love a player we know just won't last beyond 11

How incredibly dumb. The obsession this club has with stupid pick swaps is infuriating. Let's not forget that Bailey Laurie and Sam Weideman were both taken with pick swaps, so it's not even as though we get decent players from them.

I don’t think pick 6 and 11 get pick 1. But trading 11 and a future first for pick 7, then packaging 6 and 7 together. Would get pick 1.

We just have to understand that we are only ever going to be interested in drafting 2 players and young brown, with the upgrade of Turner, then we are only interested in 1 player in the draft unless the FD move Melksham to the rookie list, creating a second opening on our list. Reid, Brown, Turner fills our quota at the moment. Goody has just said that Petty ain't going anywhere. Might clear an extra spot if Spargo gets told he will probably only play 2's from now on. Lots to play out, Lamby will get it done.
