Ollie fan 3,672 Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 I think it is completely obvious that his confidence is shot. Posters say his attitude is like he wants to be in Adelaide. I disagree completely. I believe if he kicks a couple of goals in a row we will then see a completely different player. The question is: should he go to Casey to get those goals? 5 Quote

roy11 4,076 Posted April 25, 2024 Posted April 25, 2024 The last 2 games he has wracked up a total of 8 disposals which is a bit of a concern. Last year in an injury interrupted season he kicked a sensational 12.1, whilst its unrealistic to continue along these lines he is currently 1.5 so i am not sure whether it is confidence or in his body. Whilst Petty is more mobile than BBB and I get they want to get minutes into him, BBB troubled the scoreboard more. An interesting conundrum - especially with Disco's performance the other day and Shane getting onto the park. Quote
MrFreeze 2,055 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 A very interesting watch here. Petty's individual performance has not been anything at all up to standard, but at the same time he is very important for structure, and as JVR said in his interview with Stafford, Petty is someone who uplifts the whole team and improves cohesion. He does look down on confidence and i wouldn't be surprised if the trade issues were affecting him as well. An interrupted pre season does not help either - i think we should stick by him and re-assess after our next block of games vs Geelong/Carlton. I have a feeling patience will be rewarded in the near future. 3 Quote

You could visit any random farm in SA and find 3 brothers as fit as Petty, which actually makes sense once you think of it and remember his injury history. I suspect he won't have a long career in the game unless he undergoes a serious turnaround in this area. Quote

It's Quarter Time. Every kick to Petty bar one has been either a grubber of a kick to his opponent. UM, if I was a forward with delivery like that, I'd prefer to play golf - which I'm hopeless at. Then again, my dad told me once, Don't worry about hitting the ball into the scrub - you find a lot of golf balls there. I was going to say the same after watching the replay too. In the first 10 minutes he got to great places 5/6 times for what should have been 5 uncontested marks but each time the delivery was rubbish and he ended with no marks from any 4 Quote

Maybe he knows he is going at the end of the season which reflects the way he is playing just like what happened when Jackson left for Freo. Don't post much but this is interesting, noting how poor Jackson was in his last year compared to his GF year. Totally agree with DOX, looks like he is deliberately downgrading his trade value for the team he wants to play for next year, our only hope is that Port enter the bidding. When Salem and Bowey come back and with TMac playing so well our backline is the envy of the comp. If Petty can stay fit and can build into the season he’s an absolute weapon as a forward. Alongside Turner, JVR, Pickett, Fritsch and McAdam he’s an asset. Down back he’s surplus to our needs. 5 Quote

The question is: should he go to Casey to get those goals? He's clearly a confidence player and always has been. Playing back next to May and Lever allowed him to do his thing without being one of the main men really. He had a difficult return in his first game of 2021 (against Hawthorn was it?), but after that settled in nicely to our defence and by the end of the year was clearly confident and felt at home. Now he's being asked to lead the forwardline with a younger JVR and Disco. I've said it before, but if he stays injury free this year, he will kick a bag at some stage and get his mojo back. At the moment, a player like Petty needs to find that mojo at AFL level, in so many ways the VFL competition is useless. So I'd be strongly against him going back there, but will back the FD if that's what they think, but I doubt they will. The strategy I think will be to have very basic KPIs, getting to as many contests as possible, bringing the ball to ground where he can't mark it, making sure his opponent doesn't intercept on him and eventually the wheel will turn and he'll get his 'bite of the cherry' as they say. He does all this and stays fit and healthy and he can play a huge role for us this year. A match winning one at times. 4 Quote
biggestred 5,311 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 the bloke is clearly down on confidence. there is only one way to build confidence - hard work. and you can see he is working hard. itll come. 2 Quote

Axis of Bob 11,945 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 Didn't do any preseason due to his foot injury. Came into the AFL team off just a couple of half VFL games (where he also struggled) and people are surprised that he is struggling to get involved. Running is a very important part of playing AFL football and Petty hasn't been able to do any due to a long term foot injury. If you can't run then you can't play. 5 Quote
BScotti 178 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 Watching Petty live the other night, he is horribly out of form and confidence. He was missing kick after kick during the warm up. he was completely out of sorts. I presume he is there hoping he will find form until others are ready to step in. To me some ready made replacements are there, in form and ready to go. Surely Fullerton comes in for the role he was traded for. Back up ruck and fwd. natural replacement for Petty who must go back to find form. The fact Petty went into Ruck the other night was just about hm getting hands on the ball. The other is McAdam. Disco's performance created a selection headache but you cant drop him now. Surely McAdam comes in for Laurie. all of a sudden we have a much better look and players in form. Quote
Roost it far 10,137 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 Just watched the replay.....that was tough. There was a moment where Petty had the ball in the second quarter. He'd barely had a possession and he was gassed. His face was bright red and he was sucking in the air. He's working hard, he's had no pre season and very little footy last year. His time off legs would set back anyone. He'll stay in the one's, he'll start clunking a few and eventually he'll hit the scoreboard. If an opposition's best defender is on him he also knows how to defend. He'll become an asset. He'll also get us some tasty draft picks when he heads to Adelaide. 2 Quote

Supermercado 2,806 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 Can we not run him out of town under a hail of debris just yet. He's a bloody good defender and May won't be around for ever. 2 Quote

Good point, but l for one think we have severely overrated him, as a back man he takes the 3rd forward & as a forward he has no presence or pressure. l hope the club aren’t stupid enough to be playing him if his foots not right He shouldn’t be playing injured, so if he’s not play him at Casey to get his fitness, form & most importantly competitiveness back. He’s body language is shot Quote
M_9 2,216 Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 I’m all for Petty going back to Casey until he is fit and kicking goals. However a major consideration if that were to happen is who he plays alongside. One or two of BBB, Schache, Sestan, Jefferson or Fullarton have to move out of the forward 50. We can’t continue to carry a player who is having no impact - one goal in four games forward. Not taking marks, not tackling, not fit enough to chase. Sub against Geelong. Fullarton to start and subbed out if not succeeding. 1 Quote

I doubt he’d be playing on either. If he can’t beat Holmes, Guthrie, Henry or SdK he does not deserve to be in the seniors. Similarly the Blues have a very ordinary back six save for Weitering and Williams. Quote
