The Delisted Free Agent Thread

Recommended Posts

There's normally a thread for the delisted free agents, so thought I should kick this years off and whether there's anything worth looking at that could suit our needs.

https://www.afl.com.au/trade/list-changes

For me, in order of what catches my interests.

1. Lochie O'Brien. - With Hibberd retiring, Deakyn Smith being delisted and Joel Smith being moved forward, we suddenly have a lack of rebounding defenders. Lochie O'Brien could fill this void. Traditionally a wing, but has spent time at half back. A good runner with a decent left foot could be worth a look.

2. Tim O'Brien - Former Hawk turned Bulldog started as a forward who often played 2nd ruck before switching to the Dogs as a defender. We know how many key position players the Dogs have, so could we recruit O'Brien as Max's back up who could also play either end at Casey when not in the seniors, allowing plenty of opportunity for Verrell and Farris-White to develop their ruck skills in the VFL?

3. Brynn Teakl - Ruckman from Port. Played some senior football this year and is a mature body. Could be the understudy to Max we need, though personally I'm not that big a wrap.

Only ones that catch my interest are Nathan Wilson. Not sure if he has injuries but he’s 30 and provides run off HB and a great long accurate which we lack

Also Riley Bonner is a solid defender if we want cover for Hibbo going

Wilson was great before he went to Freo. Not sure what happened to him. Injuries or just Freo?

slim pickings based on the above

tim o'brien will be 30 by the time the next season rolls around; could he be our new mitch brown?

brynn teakle's main skill would appear to be being tall - if we were interested it'd be rookie list for a year, you'd think, just to kick the tyres; at sanfl level he barely averages 10 possessions, 11 hit-outs a game

Windscreens O'Brien went close to joining the KK Club, he used to kill us when he was at the Hawks. I haven't followed what he's done the last few years but based on his marking ability alone earlier in his career he's worth a look for a 1-year deal if the body is sound.

All aboard the Teakle train.

Oscar Adams got the chop from the Saints, young key defender with good physical traits. Wouldn’t mind having him train with the club to see if he has something to prove.

Flynn Perez is a player I’ve generally liked. Good size, good skills. 2 ACLs have hurt his development but there’s some class to him. I assume North think he’s a bit position-less.

Bonner is an ok half back flank but is too much of a one way player for even Port. Not quick or skilled enough to really be a weapon, I’d rather go for a lockdown defender.

Isiah Winder has talent, could do better out of Perth and in a stronger team?

Dees probably won’t go near any DFAs.  We should pickup 4 youngsters through the draft (including Brown) and target 2 mature age recruits through trade/free agency.

Perhaps Dees might have 1-2 train on over the summer in case of a potential list spot availability.  If we lost Harmes (as well as Jordon and Dunstan), I’d have a look at Jack Bytel from the Saints.  He’s a good young player but injury has stopped over past few seasons. When he’s been fit, he’s shown enough to impress. But if Harmesy stays then I wouldn’t look at Bytel.  Another wildcard thought is injury hit youngster Flynn Perez from Kangas.  Showed his talent in 2022 and was a good outside mid runner with good skills in left and right sides. Not sure what happened in 2023 (form? Injury?) maybe an invite to train at best.

Would Jacob Edwards the former number #1 pick in the 2021 Mid-Season AFL Draft be worth giving another chance?

He is a 204cm forward-ruck who was delisted by the Kangaroos.

Obviously, it would be a long-shot....but we could at least add him to the rookie list as a backup ruckman?

Jacob Edwards definitely has football talent.

As can be seen from his highlights video below:

There were massive wraps on him when he was drafted - surprised he hasn’t made an impact. (Also possibly just the afl media getting carried away during the midseason draft).

Heard some Nth fans questioning his effort, otherwise have heard very little.

Trent Bianco axed by Pies. Behind too many similar players.  He had a good under 18s career and looked good for them in 2021 and 2022, but seemed to lack opportunities this year despite his strong VFL form. We probably have plenty of similar types although I do admit he seemed like a one grab player with good skills and ability to kick a goal.  Maybe another possible invite/train on summer option.

Short and slow, can only play on the wing because his lack of pace everywhere else is a killer.

The one I’d look at from the Pies is Trey Ruscoe. He’s a bit of a character but he’s a good size, decent athlete and can win the ball.

I think he’d make a nice back pocket option should we need to cover McVee. Or the undersized third tall role Hibbo played this year.

We’re light on for defensive depth and his VFL form was strong.

Light for midfield depth too,  and we are going to have at least 5-6 spots to fill, so outside the draft these type of players are important to get so we have some AFL standard in the reserves.

Some people need to realise that clubs pick these guys up hoping they actually never play AFL.  Like Dunstan.

I think will Gould from the swans would be a good pick up as a DFA late first/early second round pick in his draft hasn't had much opportunity could be good depth

He has been starved of chances but likely he’ll go to Crows or Power and try to restart his career. I would agree to have interest if we had moved Tomlinson on.  But it’s not a need as we have Adams coming through and potentially will look at a young KPD (O’Sullivan or Murphy) in this draft around 10-12 pick.

Not delisted yet but anyone for Ned Long? Still uncontracted at the Hawks.

Not pacy but a huge body for a young mid and decent VFL form. Good endurance, good agility.

Reckon we could do worse for cheap midfield depth to cover Harmes, JJ and Dunstan.

Out-of-contract Hawk Lachie Bramble has been told to wait for a decision on his future. Bramble is quick.  Sometimes I think we need another fast mover in the outside. Similar to Markov at the Pies.  Very much a line breaker.  Plays a physical style of footy.  He seemed to be overlooked by the Hawks due to Jiath and Scrimshaw playing the half back roles, and younger guys like Macdonald on the wing.

Toby McLean delisted, perfect free midfield back up.  think we really need one even if he never plays an AFL game

has not played more than 12 games a season in four years

his body lets him down time and time again

He finally got his body right this year and was dominating the VFL.

not expecting him to be our best midfielder, but depth. no many better options out there

    PODCAST: Jason Taylor Interview

I'm interviewing the Melbourne Football Club Recruitment Manager Jason Taylor early next week on the Demonland Podcast. I'll be asking him about moving up the draft order, our new recruits (both Draftees and Trades), Daniel Curtin, our recent recruits who have yet to play a senior game, who he thinks will be the next Judd McVee and more. If you have any further questions let me know below and I'll see if I can squeeze them in. I will release the podcast either Monday or Tuesday.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE by Meggs

It was a hot afternoon at IKON where the ferocious Cats came to play, had read the manual on how to beat us and the Demons were unable to match them for the first three quarters.     With physical pressure, they took the game on with relative ease and though our resistance seemed better than the previous two weeks it was still not good enough.     Within the opening minute, Kate Hore marks within range, but her shot was a miss-kick, like a fat iron, and it kinda set a flat tone f

    TURNAROUND by Meggs

Following successive comprehensive defeats by fellow Top Four heavyweights the Demons play down a division this Sunday against the highly promising Cats.     Strangely, no games against the Cats for five seasons and now we play them twice in one season.     With the blueprint on how to defeat the Dees available on the dark web the real question is, will we crumble again under the finals pressure cooker or will we rediscover our #DemonSpirit and execute a turnaround?   Mak

THE SECRET IS OUT by Meggs

We were expecting that after last week’s comprehensive defeat by Brisbane, our coach Mick Stinear would have his charges coming out breathing finals fire. Instead, it was North who had the aggression, the numbers, who blocked our scoring avenues and rendered us impotent, unable to match the Kangas during any phase of the match.   Darren Crocker, the North coach, later highlighted that how to beat Melbourne is no secret following recent losses to Adelaide and Brisbane and now North.

CATCH EM ON THE HOP by Meggs

A sunny Sunday afternoon feast of finals footy awaits at our team’s favourite home ground, Ikon Park.  Great vibes at Princes Park where we remain undefeated from 7 matches and counting. Expect the Dees to come out strongly, sparring and outmuscling the Kangaroos in the middle.  With Paxy back firing and our gun forwards mesmerising, hopefully we catch ‘em on the hop. Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane have filled ten of the twelve Grand Final spots in AFLW history, and this dominance

    COLD AGGRESSION by Meggs

“Cold aggression”, Lions star full forward Dakota Davidson called it. Brisbane outmuscled, outran, and ultimately overwhelmed us. They certainly came to play and exorcised their 2022 grand final grudge defeating the Demons in the rematch by 25 points. Stats count and Brisbane won the key ones. Inside 50s 42 to 24, centre clearances 8 to 6, uncontested possessions 133 to 75 and 51 marks to 27. The Lions’ sustained pressure is the kind we usually bring for other teams.   There

    HOME PRIZE by Meggs

Big stakes this weekend. For the winner, will it be a Dees minor premiership and potential home grand final or will it be a Lion‘s Top Four finish and a double chance?    Huge interest circulates in the how the ladder unfolds over this weekend’s final round of the 2023 home and away season with some 10 teams vying for 8 places.     It’s AFLW Pride Week, a celebration of people from all walks of life coming together, being respected, loved and accepted. WICKED WIND by Meggs

Hang out to your hats. The strong blustery conditions made it extremely difficult for either team to execute footy skills but nonetheless an entertaining match ensured for those brave enough to venture down to Casey Fields on Saturday. Impressive Irish player Aine Tighe was a late withdrawal for Freo. Maddie Gay was also a late change, and she was replaced with 19 year-old Georgia Gall, the 6-foot ex Melbourne Stars BBL cricketer who has been impressing the coaches in scrimmage games.
