I hate to say this, I really do, but I think Davey may have cost us the game today...

It was just after our last goal. We were up by 1 point. The ball gets thrown onto the boot of a Melbourne player in the centre (think it was Macca) and heads towards centre-half foward. Davey was stand flat-footed and was staring towards the bench, and by the time he realised the ball was coming, his opponent had moved off, grabbed the ball, booted it foward, Jones gave away the free kick, and they kicked the last goal of the game for the win.

Now, he was one of, if not the, best player for Melbourne today. Myself and all 4 of my mates saw it and started cursing ourselves. Did anyone else? It happened very quickly, but for that split second Davey had lost concentration and it cost us, because the Doggies player got the ball without contest. Davey was literally standing still when he realised it was coming foward. It looked really bad. But I hate to say because he was sensational today. But that lapse in concentration may have cost us...

EDIT: Have a look at the reply. Should be on soon.

are u serious???

cani ahve some of those drugs your on please??

what about Bruce 40 out no one around him.....and instead of going for goal he pops up a hospital kick to our forwards 20 m away???

He was spent, and should have been resting. He ran his guts out and needed to come off. That is why he was staring at the bench, his face told the story.

If flash hadn't have played, we would have been spanked. He was GOLD today.

He didn't cost us the match...he kept us in it all day long.

That was the part. That goal there. I've gotten the timeline wrong, but you see Davey just move off too late. The ball was kicked straight too him, and he was just standing there. A lapse in concentration caused the turn-over and the goal.

Rubbish.

Neita's horrific form and stupid 50m penalty, Jones' sloppy tackle that was paid in the back, players missing easy shots on goal yet again... that cost us the game.

Davey was brilliant today, and his run off the half-back line was the main reason we could compete with the Dogs.

Spot on Jaded.

To single out one piece of play as 'costing us the game', despite it being a very close game, is rubbish.

Davey was magical today-- tackles, run and carry, great disposal and even overhead marks. He was just everywhere. The amount of running up and down the ground he did, its little wonder he was looking to the bench. IMO, the best game of his career to date.

spot on! rubbish one piece of play costs a team a match. much the same as johnson's awesome goal winning them the game, it was a top goal as it kills me to say. davey ran that hard he desrved to have a sleep let alone a moment off of concerntration. when you're a goal up and your captain punches someone in the face, giving away a goal that's painful, but i won't blame neitz, i love him and i reckon he's injured.

so proud of the bois, played way hard, tougher around the clinches. why we played their game plan i won't understand, we gave them a run on by playing that free flow. we killed them in close yet decided to allow them open, free flowing play. don't get it

so proud, so frustrated, so drunk

COME ON YOUR SPURS

Cameron Bruce was disgraceful not kicking for goal in the last couple of minutes and Brad Miller needs to mark, turn and kick and stop pissing about handballing back into danger.....

Aaron Davey's game today was probably the best ive seen of his career so far and Sylvia was awesome in the second half.

We cost ourselves the 4 points today but with a better bloke at the helm of the control panels this wouldnt happen.

yep i could name a dozen things that cost us goals,

ward running along the boundary bounces a few times kicks it over our players head to the dogs, they run it throught he centre....goal

neitz free.... goal

ok it was a mistake but there were lots, dunn not kicking the ball well when charging towards goals and shanking the kick

Neitz had of to

last 10 secs of the game yze used his right foot to the edge of the square and neitz wasnt even looking where the ball was

he called it U GET IT

so i reckon he stuffed it up

Davey was BOG, you can't really blame a game on one single player. If you want to blame someone, blame the whole team, cause this is a team sport. If we had done more we wouldn't have been in that position and could have won.

good point, kills me but neitz shouldve done what every dorward should do, be in front!

The 2 tackles by McDonald and Jones were crucial for mine in. Junior has been a good servant, and Jones could become a club great but poor execution of tackle technique from both in giving away blatant frees for in the back when they would have got frees if they had rolled the players.

Davey played a darn good game for mine. Now if only we had Alwyn in the forward line when Aaron goes into the midfield and defence.

Spot on, Demoniac. I was going to say the same thing. I think one of the biggest "clangers " a player can make is to fall on an opponent's back when it's a surprise tackle.... he doesn't know you're there. All you have to do is fall slightly sideways so you don't end up on his back, and then you, the tackler, get the free. Mind you, I thought Footscray got away with two or three of those sloppy tackles.

As for Neitz giving away that crucial centre break resulting in a goal!!!!!! Really!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder what Godders is doing that upsets ball-players like Goodes and West so much. Just a few short elbows I think. You'd think they'd be used to it!

If he didnt play that well most of the game we wouldnt have even come close and u would be complaining about him. His 2 goals, lotsof possessions and tackles made us that close to the game.

Absolutely, completely agree. Davey played the all-round game today. Appeared in the forward line to crumb when needed, and took marks on the last line of defence when needed. To single him out for the loss is absolute madness.

I actually thought one bloke killed us and cost us the game. He wore number 11 and was in a yellow top.

I saw this by Bruce....ridiculous, he should have had a shot on goal.

The umpires jibbed us badly. Two weeks in a row which have cost us 4 points each....we would have been above Carlton and Freo by now.

McLaren is a disgrace....they need to realise that there are TWO teams out there....robbed again, 2 weeks in a row.

i really dont think the umps care if we win or lose, we had our chances last week snd this week , we just lacked a bit of composure when the game was there to be won. neita gave no leadership and we turned the ball over too many times in general play

When did footy stop being a team sport?

To single out an individual player as costing us the game is utterly ridiculous. And this is ignoring the fact that Davey was truly excellent today.

Mistakes will happen, we don't want them to but they always will. It is how you deal with them that counts.

And it is not the single one by a single player that cost us anything, it is the cumulative.

What I saw today was a team that worked their guts out collectively (yes, even those that weren't on song) and just got pipped at the post.

Heartbreaking? Disappointing? Gut Wrenching? Yes, but no one players fault in particular.

It is still a team sport.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
