Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Have we officially found our full forward?

saying to the morning sun...

If I came across a refreshing beer after a particularly brutal encounter with the morning sun (or probably a rejuvenating vial of laudanum in Donne's case) and said, 'gee, don't you look refreshing', I would be saying that to myself, of the beer (I've been in Southern Europe lately so know exactly what I'm talking about). Speaking to a ale is just plain silly, as it has limited self-consciousness, as is speaking to someone else after 15 or so pints for the reverse reason, despite my habit of doing so Demonland.

Now suppose I encountered and ingested some strong field mushrooms, and said, 'gee, aren't you little brutal cups of golden morning sunshine', that may however be another matter. But narrator-protagonists in text don't 'speak' to anyone or thing, despite the most common attribution device of 'he/she/so-and-so said'. In this case, the anti-Romantic poet John Donne, likely suffering from a hangover of some sorts and lamenting the morning sun, at best speaks to an implied readership, of that dastardly morning sun.

If you would like further instruction on implied readers and even implied authors, or textual semiotics, I have an account of Fiver. It's free to sign up. Although I feel like I might have undermined my credibility by forgetting to note the most 'ironic' point of this sub-discussion on pedantry; it's taking place in a thread about a player named Petty lol.

I wouldn't say we have found our FF but it's a start.

The pros are that Petty has trained with the fwd line at times through pre season and during the year.

He is a strong contest player and good grab.  Balta is a very good and strong defender and Petty killed him.

The cons are that we have seen it once for a full game, his other good performances up forward were in minimum time or against very average opposition.

Nest option right now and I hope it works, but have to have a plan B too

Petty did reasonably well as a forward in 2019 too...

After Ray (?) Carr and Darren Cuthbertson I am always reluctant to proclaim a new full forward until there are more goals on the board. But he is promising and this is the time of the year for a new champion forward to announce himself.

However, how refreshing it was to see Petty and JVR take marks in the forward line without having to compete with Gawn or Grundy (I know he was not playing). Its hard enough against the oppos without having to compete with your own team mates.

When Fritta comes back he will probably cause Melksham to be on the I.C bench. J.Smith may end up getting dropped. Tomlinson or T.Mac will end up with Petty's defensive role. J.Smith needs to do a lot more especially when playing North. Much more disposals and score a few goals.

6 goals from 10 games isn't great.  Which is my point.  Hope he proves me wrong.  I also don't think this is his future either, but it's what we need atm

Haven't heard of rotations?

Why 6 goals from 10 games that's not Petty's record? He kicked 6 last week in one game and other games in 2023 has not been played on the forward line as a priority in all games.

It's what he does from now on that matters when he is played as a forward.

If he is successful and looking at how he played last week he looked every inch a forward so that may well be his new found career position with the ability to  do cameos if needed in defence in the future.

Go Harry kick another half dozen again today against North.

Can’t believe I am saying this, but Melk has added an “it” factor. He is experienced and has footy smarts, can take a grab and kick goals on both feet from anywhere and at distance. His biggest problem is staying in the game. Whether this is his last year, or he gets another, remains to be seen.

Petty can’t be expected to kick 6 each week, but with JVR we have a couple of strong marking key forwards, who can contribute.

Fritta we know and when we add Kozzie, Chandler and yes ANB, we have an ok forward line.

Wirh Clarry back, Tracc will see a bit more of the F50 and that again improves the forward line and adds unpredictability, making it harder for the opposition.

We have Jefferson to come, hopefully next year and imo, we still need to draft another key forward to develop, so we have 3 on the list. I am assuming BBB will retire and Tom might as well, or play out the last year of his contract, maybe more for Casey than in the AFL.

Petty as our pillar key forward, now that he has had a breakout game, looks likely for the short term future at least.

Melksham is desperate. Desperation at this time of the year is very good. As is pressure for spots.

Clarry is back next week. That means JJ and Harmes will need to play the game of their lives today because only one stays in next week.

I think you need to look at what I replied to to get context rather than go on your rant  before hand.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
