A bit too cute at selections IMO.

Tomlinson flat out did not deserve to be dropped on any measure. Integrity of selection queries right there. If anything he should’ve been dropped when McKay beat him the week before.

Will be even more curious if Petty goes forward and we’re back to our previous issue of 1 key defender short which doesn’t allows May and Lever to flourish.

There’s no way Petty will play forward. I think it’s as simple as they like the Smith forward setup, and Petty is in our best back 6 (while Tomlinson isn’t) and now that he’s back, he’ll play there.

Who cares about his AA chances if getting him right increase his chances of getting another premiership medal tho right?

Of course. It’s just a shame as he’s a walk up AA midfielder every day of the week but he might miss out now because of games missed.

Squad mentality, I guess.

Tommo stiff but assume its for lack of a matchup and he will get more games (and will have been assured as such)

Interested to see how Smith - Petty swing machine might operate

A few pionts.....

1 I smell a HUGE RAT re Oliver missing, Goody on one hand several weeks ago declaring that he would play after 21 days of rehab  before his hospital episode, only for Richardson to say... he still rehabing his hamstring today?? Nup not buying this, somethings going on! More Red Herrings than a Norway delicatessen here!

2 Tomlinson gets the Axe after a great game vs filth for a really underdone Petty, I dont like it at all!

3 Bowey was almost BOG before his concussion and should have been an auto inclusion, if I was Chandler and Kossy, BOTH Better perform tommorrow if they want to play next week!

STRANGE SELECTIONS AND NON ONES

I was late to this news but I am strongly opposed to dropping Tomlinson for Petty. It just feels wrong. Tomlinson’s game against Collingwood was too good to warrant Petty being an automatic inclusion. The harsh result should have, as unfortunate as it may be, been imposed on Petty, not Tomlinson.

Jordon for Spargo the correct call in Oliver’s ongoing absence.

Tonlinson is very stiff, but Petty >>> Tomlinson.  Petty, fit, has to come straight in - either Smith or Tomlinson had to go out and either would have been very unlucky.

It would suck to be Tomlinson though in this situation.

1. Coaching panel decides our backline needs to be smaller to combat the changing (faster) ball movement of sides like Collingwood
2. Petty moves forward to allow (1)
3. Dees lose structure behind the ball without a third tall
4. Petty shows promise up forward before injury
5. Coaches bring Tomlinson in to address (3); bring in Smith to address (4)
6. Tomlinson proves the coaches are correct about (3) so they drop him and bring in the guy they removed in point (2)

My opinion from day dot has been keep the three amigos in the backline together - glad the coaches have caught up. It's a long season so as long as we get there in the end, but it feels like shuffling deckchairs a bit.

Puzzling to see Tomlinson dropped after a standout performance against quality opposition. Unless the plan is to move Petty back into defence, it doesn't make sense. Either way, it sends a signal to Tomlinson that if he wants regular AFL football he will have to find a new home next season. I reckon he's entitled to feel miffed for such a harsh call. Spargo, on the other hand, has been surviving on the edge for some time.

Just a question - who did Tommo actually play on against the pies? A combo of resting ruck and the incredibly lazy ash Johnson?

Whilst he was very good, who he played on needs to be taken into account. It's hardly like he shut down a top forward and the week before, he was well beaten by McKay.

If lever is to play 3rd intercepting, the 2nd key back needs to be trusted to beat or neutralise the games better forwards - the likes of Hipwood, J Cameron, etc. We know Petty can shut these players down

Tommo was to some degree lucky that Collingwood don't have that player in their current line up. Geelong have quite a few...

Perhaps it has something to do with how players have responded to (or been able to complete) increased workloads during this period?  Bowey would not have been able to do anything so might be on a program as we speak, same for Oliver.  Maybe Tommo hasn’t pulled up as he might have needed to to get in the squad, but Petty has had the time to put in the Kms, and is therefore a better option to cover Cameron????

He knew that last year and offered himself around... no takers

Much the same as Tom Mac in 2020.

It's a tough game... just ask Luke Dunstan and to a lesser extentJosh Schache

Reckon Joel Smith will continue to improve and show us all that he might just be an important part of our forward line in the games towards September.

We focussed on BBB, Tmac, Petty and Gawndy for the first half of the season, and Smith is hardly a gorilla forward, but last week he presented well, got up the ground and was a good target.

Hope he finally takes his chance and locks down a regular spot.

Go get em, Smithy!

I hope so. Tomlinson enabled May and Lever to return to premierdhip form.

If goody goes back to no 3rd tall and petty plays forward then he's being too cute by half.

Here's hoping he remembers what helped deliver him a flag. Otherwise Scott will out coach him - again

Let’s not over play Tomlinsons game, he had a good game but it was hardly extraordinary.  The Pies have 1 key forward in Mihocek, which May played on.

Let’s calm the farm a bit with Tomlinson, he had a good game against the Pies, but he’s insurance for injury to May Lever & Petty.

If Petty’s fit he’s a lot better player than Thommo

Brown being an emergency is the biggest curiosity for me, he hasn’t played in the seniors in months and has been out of all footy for 2 weeks with his knee and now he is named as an emergency 🤔

I reckon petty will play forward, as will Smith, taking spargo's role

Gus plays back, with Spargo, who looks like he needs a spell as sub.

If super wet, sub spargo in for petty.

Scott will out coach him , that's a given.

Who wins is another matter

Don't like this one bit.

Goes against everything they preach about in terms of continuing to reward good form whether that's at AFL level or VFL.

This has a hint of Goody once again sticking to his favourites..

That would be silly.

It's no coincidence that's the last two games we've kept opposition to a relatively low score purely because we've had the 3 tall defenders which has released May and Lever.

I would be extremely if they did in fact start Petty forward and leave both May and Lever as our only tall defenders.

If we’ve dropped Tomlinson and then Petty plays forward then the selection committee are as dumb as dog****.

It’s been proven time and time again that we need the three tall defenders for our structure to work. We’ve played our best football over the last three years that way and struggled when it’s just been May and Lever. Petty has to play back. Petty was having a poor year both up forward and in defense and should’ve been dropped prior to injury. On form this year, Tomlinson has been better and had a ripper against the Pies. Bringing in an underdone player who was in poor form and dropping a fit player who was in form is poor selection. Petty is better, but not right now.

Would’ve liked to see Bowey in again too. He was killing it before the concussion. Hopefully he showed good form in the VFL and gets promoted again. Although form apparently doesn’t matter to our selection committee…

I was thinking the same about Bowey but not sure who makes way.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
