I actually think last night was a good rehearsal for next week.

Carlton love playing fast flowing footy, to get it into their forward line quickly and give their KPF’s the best chance. Sure it was dour, but it was effective.

It was a dress rehearsal in trying to control tempo and limit opposition momentum, something that the filth take full advantage of when in their favour. A good hitout for next week methinks.

 

Couple of things............... despite the best efforts of a majority of umpires we still won the game.

Razor next week please.

I’m excited about McVee’s midfield potential but he’s a skinny kid still trying to learn one position. You’d disrupt his game trying to get midfield rotations in to him and I doubt his body is ready for midfield contests.

Rivers (more than one stint a game) and Salem are surely ahead in the pecking order.

It was a hard watch Red and poor disposal is poor football particularly when not under much pressure. Carltons 2nd half pressure rating was 160 which is extremely low.

As good as that record highlighted is, we scored only once every 8 of those F50 intercepts. The league average is one every 3. Our forward entries are awful and have been for 18 months. We need to sort this quickly, it just won't win games against good teams.

I'm happy with the win and there were some good signs of form from several players but I walked away from The G completely underwhelmed.

I did enjoy that we looked to switch play several times last night, something I haven't seen most this season.

I see some discussion about 'loading' arose because someone quoted BT saying players looked like they were running through treacle (or something equally sticky).  I wouldn't take any notice of BT's mutterings, let alone get into the loading debate on the back of them.

Re Kozzie - I'm no expert on where he should position himself when he is not making silly efforts to take mark of the year.  But it seems to me he stands too close to the pack which greatly restricts where he can get to quickly.

Any thoughts on why Gawn was one of the players just outside the protected zone when Mckay was taking a kick for goal from the boundary?  He is too slow to get to him when he played on, so why wasn't he on the goal line in case of a low kick instead? Is it thought his longer body is more likely to affect the kick than a fast smaller player?  Or was it just a stuff-up?

Kozzie needs to cut out the late tackles that mean a downfield free kick do more percentage plays and rove packs not seek mark of the year

Agree. As good as Kozzie is, he could be so much better if he cut out the late hits and clumsy high jump attempts. He was very quiet after quarter time 

The more I reflect on the game this morning, some more minor victories emerge. Our effective tackling was back (there were still some horrible missed tackles but we were much better), our full ground defence was strong, our 2 way running was evident, and our stupid handballing was limited. Hopefully these things are in place for KB.

But even if we get our F50 entries and basic forward play in better shape, the kicking by Brayshaw, Rivers, Langdon, Salem, Viney etc.. is a real concern. Unpressured turnovers equals opposition shots on goal in today's footy and we gave the Blues far too many freebies.

Darcy Moore will be cracking up at the thought of rebounding from our long bomb forward line. My money's on him breaking the record for intercept marks

I know highlights and goal packages have a purpose to show, well, highlights, but we looked very good in patches last night.

The hysteria around our performance is weird. I really don't know what people expect. Carlton defended as they do and we defended better. We had the ball in had far more and never looked like losing. It was clinical and a great dress rehearsal for next week.

We saw a better defence last night and Salem was sublime in stages - near his GF performance.  We now tinker with our defence at our peril.   May  Lever, Hibberd Salem Bowey McVee Rivers (when needed). need to consolidate - then Petty back shortly with Tomlinson till then..

McVee is a fascinating find for us.

I said to my Blues Tragic friend at the game that you'll see Kozzie unsuccessfully attempt mark of the year, and successfully attempt goal of the year.   Delivered again. 

Thought it was a good win. Kept our nose infront all night. Responded well after the Blue's got a run on.

The quick runs from the a slinging backline were great.

 A better handball game than last week. A couple of series were right on the edge, and ended up breaking the line and leading to effective inside 50 marks.

We looked a quicker team.

After the scrutiny Carlton faced by the media, I thought they may have made it a closer game.

They were desperate at times, and we handled their pressure.

We managed the tempo better than other recent games (still a work in progress) and played the switch several times as well. Didn't give junk time goals, though the last 4 minutes of game looked a bit unsteady when we were trying to ice it.

They fumbled a fair bit in the first half, then we started playing to their level. Happy we lifted in the last quarter.

Max marking the ball, really helps us.

Maybe, but the speed and skill at which Coll rebound will make May, Lever and Tommo poo their pants. Those guys tend to fumble, spill easy marks and lay clumsy tackles when under immense pressure. May is hopeless below his knees, Lever a butter fingers for marks when worried and Tommo works in slo mo. Great against a crappy side, not so much against top 4 sides
