Binman, while I'm sure being a MICA paramedic is stressful in that they are dealing with life and death situations on a regular basis I think being a senior coach would be a more stressful job overall.

While being a paramedic would deal with more stressful situations and real risk of issues such as PTSD, they have a high degree of job security and their work is done when their shift ends. Senior coaches have the constant stress of managing more than 50 people to deliver success in a high performance industry (noting emergency is high performance as well) and have little to no job security. Both roles are difficult and subject to burnout but there is no financial or other support available for senior coaches once they finish.

The Suns stories are starting already.

It would be realistic to guess he is already signed for next year.

I think we are going to be sprayed with BS about how he lost his drive, when in reality it’s probably a new gig at huge money, with a very good emerging list, that has many more advantages than most clubs, ( academies/picks) to get even better. Not to mention a warmer climate and nicer lifestyle.

Chook I agree that the jobs that you have listed can be quite stressful as they involve working with trauma and social disadvantage, however, I don't think they would normally have the same level of stress as a senior AFL coach for the reasons I outlined earlier.

I am sorry but have to disagree. Life and death decisions are involved and until you have to make them it is hard to understand the impact they have. That’s all I have to say - I don’t want it to become a debate and I’m not trying to disrespect Dimma.

Smart move. The whole “We back our veteran coach for the next bottom out rebuild” never eventuates.

Anything with life at stake trumps all. 

Has a team ever made finals after the coach has been fired or quit. I don't think they are good enough but I can see the Tigers winning their next four games.

Doesn't the Pope have twice the responsibility of most given that he has to worry for people both now and in the afterlife?

It's a good question @La Dee-vina Comedia. I suspect Francis addresses the here and now and lets the afterlife take care of itself. Just an additional thought.

Not sure that Hardwick is out of pocket either ... gets paid out for this year you'd imagine and then gets to walk into another job next season at $1Million per season

Remembering that a sacked coach only gets paid out 6 months severance

So he effectively gets at least 4 months paid leave (about $350k) and walks into more millions down the track

Yep, very stressful job - particularly if you factor in the rocket science, brain surgery, constantly having to reaffirm his Catholicism and his inexplicable need to regularly [censored] in the woods.

Why would someone resigning get paid for the year? I’d imagine he has a heap of leave entitlements that it doesn’t matter but I’m not sure Richmond should pay a full 4 months that he won’t work.

The big question is will Richmond seek trade compensation if/when he signs a new deal before his Richmond contract expires. I think they could and they should.
