deanox 10,070 Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 There are currently 18 players in the comp that come from Tassie. For context there are 32 NSW/ACT players. But 22 of those are listed with GWS or Sydney. Also 32 Queenslanders in the comp with 20 listed as GCS or Brisbane. Hopefully with a bit of investment in Tasmanian footy, there can be an increase in that number of players. 2 Quote
Turner 1,516 Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 I actually really like the suggestion... its fair and makes sense and its not garanteeing players go one way or the other but also for players like hugh greenwood or liam jones who may not ever play 100 games at one club but could play 100 games of league footy their kids being eligible for tasmania seems like a fair negotiation 1 Quote

Does Garland even have kids? I wonder if the F/S rule for Tassie will mean that the kids coming through will have a choice, rather than being 'forced' to only go to Tassie? I can't imagine, if given the choice, that Robbo or Green's boys will pick Tassie, given both their families are in Melbourne and both their dads are heavily involved at the club. That could change very quickly with Brad and Robbo over 4 years and it's their sons making the decision after all anyway. Quote

I don't believe the chill of Tasmania will affect his decision, he'd move to Brisbane or GC if that were the case The father son/daughter rule might sting us. Russell Robertson, David Neitz, Brad Green, Col Garland and Jeremy Howe all played 100 games for MFC and are from Tassie Unless my memory is shot Neita was from Edithvale-Aspendale…you know, just beyond Mordialloc. Don’t know much more about the other players but I reckon we’d have first dibs opposed to a new club. Quote
Colm 2,204 Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 I think people here might be looking at at the effect the Tassie team might have on the talent pool and our list are looking at it wrong. With JT and Lamb heading our recruitment we should be looking at how we can use this to our advantage. The new club will have a bounty of picks they are will to part with. Over the past lot of years our recruitment team has come out in top of a vast majority of trades we have been involved with. On top of that we enter the this years draft with the strongest hand we have had in years. Yes it will be a tricky time to manage our list going forward but with JT and Lamb making the calls I think we are better placed than anybody else to manage it very well. 2 Quote
DubDee 26,679 Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 what a silly list. the players they will target aren’t on an AFL list yet. They reckon they’ll target a 33yo Jack Macrae? if he is even still playing Quote

Tasmania may say the lack of numbers is due to the state being overlooked and taken for granted by the AFL so long. Hopefully with the introduction of a team, things will start to change. I for one am not as pessimistic about Tasmania's ability to retain players. Adelaide and Port Adelaide do a pretty good job at retaining players on their lists who come from outside of Adelaide. If you can convince someone in their 20's to stay in Adelaide, then you can convince someone in their 20's to stay in Hobart IMO. Just need to make sure the place has a good culture and has the right people in charge. Quote
