I would have thought Tmac got one more shot at it but I'm not the selector.

    ???  rubbish game???  Cameron, who I saw as his opponent, had a pretty average game by his standards.  So, how did you come to that conclusion ?

    This was certainly a worry in the latter half of last year, when we weren’t fully fit and had some important players carrying injuries. 

    It’s going to be different on Sunday. If they double team BBB then we’ll have someone loose and if the ball is brought to ground, then … BANG!

    I have a feeling the T-Mac "omission" is actually an injury or rest.  The last quarter of the game last week he had a noticeable limp.

    I am worried about the work load JVR is going to have in his first game.  and also how big Grundy's tank is atm, i have no worries that Grundy can't dominate his opponent but can he go for 80 - 85% of the game?

    Very intrigued with how this plays out, and hopefully out coaching staff have a good plan.

    Was ok in 2021 Gawn Brown and Tmac.  And Gawn no longer for 5/6 matches. Fritta agsin needs to stand up and clearly JVR will play the second ruck role playing say 25 to 33 % of time on the ball and forward or bench otherwise. 

    Tmac must be the Sub.  Also some mids must play blinders and others flankers contribute more than last week, ie no passengers when we panicked and our game plan became non existent. Can't do the lights out trick to change momentum at the G so full on running and movement the order of the day. 

    Ignoring the reason for the outs, the thing I like is we have/are rewarding 3 players in JVR, Hibberd and Jordon who were excellent in the VFL last week and deserving of promotion. They will also be hellbent on taking their chance and cementing a spot in the 22. Best of luck to each of them.

    Thank god honestly.  Picking an out of form/unfit Tom has already helped derail previous seasons.   Picking "fit" players in a brutal game > someone that can't really jump or run but is tall and sometimes competes.

    If we learnt anything from last year it should be not playing  injured or out of form players til it is way too late.

    different in 2021 as Gawn was primarily a ruck. LJ primarily fwd. 

    i don’t think Gawn fwd, T Mac and Brown is a good option for us. 

    can someone who knows footy better than me explain why we’d ask a first gamer in JVR to play ruck and not Brown? just structural so brown is the focal point always?

    but harsh on a 193cm kid?

    Agree but who says we are? I think they’ll share.

    a lot of posters speaking about it as if fact…

    i thought i was missing something. Maybe Petty can take some ruck duties down that end

    we’ve selected 5 half backs. can we assume Brayshaw plays some midfield? Rivers on a wing?

    we also need some fwd line support with no Kozz. i’ll like to see what Bowie could do on a HF flank but i wonder if we have any plans. maybe Viney more time fwd


    Boys are having a run at Goschs. May is out there. Out of the emergencies, T Mac and Melksham are also there. 

    On the other side of the field a few Casey boys training with Kozzie and Schache.

    Either Melk or McDonald are subs.

    Because Brown is to rucking what i am to marathon running. 

    JVR spent afair bit of tme in the ruck in the second half of last year's VFL season and was the back up ruck in orund one of this year's season.

    Plenty of pratice rucking against men.

    I'd be more worried for the oppoents he is going to launch into.

    TMac gives us fair bit of postional flexibility given he can go back or forward.

    has to be melk surely. under normal circumstances for a sub - playing a Q only he fits the role well. 

    T Mac is struggling for fitness or form and would be better for the run at Casey


    In the last 15 mins the team has been working on a turnover drill. Team with the ball would link up a few times with handballs to the wing, coach would yell turnover and the defending team would now rebound with a switch to the corridor then inside 50 to a leading player.

    May is moving unrestricted to me.

    Toomorrow  Mr Grundy (Reg to his friends) will have to make a statement justifying his selection by the DEES pivotal gamein my opinion. I'm hoping he takes control

    In many ways that game plan was reaction to ours - it became obvious the only way to beat us was to playt fast so our defence couldn't get set.

    The way to beat their game game plan is huge pressure on every disposal, but in particular kicks. Press up to deny space, corall, chase from behind, harrass. Add clogging up the corridor as much as possible.

    The Swans' game plan fell apart under the Cats pressur einb the GF. The Pies did well to almost beat the Cats in the prelim - but ultimately lost it becuase their kicks to the corridor in the last quarter came unstuck. 

    My tip is that scoring will go down now as the early season fast bvall movment trend will diappate because if teams can't go with teams like the Pies, swans and the dees  - and by that i mean literally leg speed but also conditioning -  they will gte dimantled. And coaches dont like that.

    So i expect to see more game like last night where teams look to take th speed out of the game and make it a kick to kick, stoppage based slugfest and clog up the corridor as much as possible.  

    I suspect that trend wil start tonight because the Pies will cut the Tigers up if they just go head to head fast footy. The slippery conditions wil help the tigers turn the gamne into a scrap.

    As for our game, the key will be how much pressure we can apply.

    Pressure, pressure, pressure. 

     

     

    Absolutely cannot play anything like last week or will get smashed 

     

    Need to get the pressure rating back to 2021 instead of whatever the pathetic rating would have been last week.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
