That was because players back then never brushed their teeth before a game so breathing on BBB brought anger of the smell of bad breathe to the Umpires . It's a new AFL rule now that players have to clean their toothy pegs before a game.  Rule: 1423.6 para 535

Crunch time: a critical moment or period (as near the end of a game) when decisive action is needed.

How is this even remotely possible for JVR, who's not played a senior game, maybe carrying an injury, and has a contract until the end of 2025?

Huh? So if either has a quiet game R1 or doesn't play R1 that's it for them???

I would have chalked Laurie in for a debut last year but there's something just a little off from the limited stuff I've seen this pre season.

A H&A match is NEVER a practice match, no matter the reason.

Besides, the AFL 86d one of the practice matches on account of the extra round this season, meaning there’s currently only one (official). The Clubs organised unofficial practice matches amongst themselves, therefore not a lot has changed.

I'm curious how it can be 'A' final opportunity. I might be poking holes here, but it's either the final chance or its not.  If not, it's an opportunity, not a final one. 🤪

Edit:  Oops pressed submit too early, I actually had a view here that JVR has plenty of time, and I don't see any reason to rush him if TMac, BBB and Fritsch are all fit and healthy, although he's a different player and could fit in there.  I don't know about Bailey Laurie, because I don't know who he replaces.... can't see too many opportunities to replace anyone in the team.... I'd like to see him get a full season in the VFL before putting him to the sword.

I agree, but I'd like to think they've earned the chance. McVee and JVR seem the most likely, although I think Chandler will be given the chance, even though he's not new blood as such.

Why A full season ? 

No other player has to wait that long to be selected. The art of selection and promotion of players is to give them an opportunity to gain form and show consistency and earn promotion if and when the situation demands it. 

You don't penalise your players saying that you haven't deserved promotion in a particular year if they have done a good period of form and are up to standard.

You are only saying this about Bailey because he hasn't shown to date the required length of form and development  to earn promotion. If he can put together a block of 6/8 games at AFL standard at Casey he should be considered for promotion. 

If you delay the young players the lure of AFL you disrupt the whole program of your list and will lose players as a result.

I think Goody needs to reward more often this season Chandler and some others if this situation arises.  We have to produce SIX new players in 2023 who are new and AFL standard inc. our trade players and if we do not then our chances are not great to improve and win the Flag.

2021 is now 2 years on and selection must be more robust and rewarding no doubt how much we love  every 23 of our heroes who broke the drought in such magnificent fashion that year. 

In other words now is the right time to consider and reward Chandler and McVee if the SC and Coach deem so as I believe each have earns that right with their effort  over the pre season and Chandler last season.

Hunter Brody and Schache or Dunstan could be 2 of 4 trade players although that is up to opinion with the last two mentioned. So 4 recruits from our trade are what we need to keep evolving and improving. That means promoting on effort and form from below if pressure is to be maintained on all senior players. 

I await the season with great hope and confidence we will do the right thing for all on our list and look forward to the Dees in contention with a fit and talented group to challenge.

Im with you. I was very excited to see something from JVR - but was left a little disappointed. Didn't have high expectations either - just a few clean grabs and a snag would have done it (in seniors game). I just saw one assist and a few follow up tackles. He's just a 2nd year at that, so ill cut him some slack, but dont get what all the hype has been about him during pre-season. 

Laurie is bordering on a failure. He needs something special this year to turn his career around or face being delisted/traded.

He isn't out of contract till next year but does need to show something at Casey this year.

Laurie doesn’t look like an athlete, but both he and Bowey were drafted for allegedly being the best decision makers/kicks in their draft - despite not being physically what you’d expect of an AFL player.

I’ve seen glimpses of the decision making and neat kicking from Laurie at VFL level. I think he’s competing with guys like Spargo and Sparrow who have it over him for fitness. I think they will give Laurie time to improve his fitness but if he can’t get to the required level then he will be in trouble.

He does some great things when he's got the pill. He just doesn't impact games a whole lot. There was a game at Casey last year where he picked up 30 touches in the middle. At the time I thought...yes, this is why we recruited him! His ball use was amazing and he seemed way above VFL level. I have only seen glimpses of that since. I dunno, he strikes me as bottom-heavy in physique if that's a thing.

That's my take too.

I think laurie's biggest challenge at the dees is locking down a position.

He has too many players ahead of him to crack a senior game as an inside mid. Dunstan can't even get a game as an inside mid.

Half back is a bit better, but mcvee has jumped ahead of him it would appear, and of course bowey and Salem are both locks.

Small forward? Not sure he is quick enough.

In our game plan, there are a number of roles that must be really hard to thrive in. 

I'm thinking of the half forward roles spargs and nibbler play.

And, for want of a better word, the utility role that JJ, sparrow and harmes play (ie bit of time in the middle, push forward, push back, some time at half forward to.

At this stage, and really it is still relatively early days for him, I can only see Laurie getting a game playing either the half forward role or the utility role.

And for either role he will need a seriously good tank.

There's still time - leys see how he goes this year. But he might end up having to go to another club to get regular senior games.

Cool your jets a little. JVR is hyped because we've seen glimpses at Casey of a big forward with heart, aggression and desire. He's not going to be Buddy Franklin. 

It was one practise game where he was inserted half way through. Big guys take time. Just have some patience.
