Just as an aside, do you know your avatar’s nick name?

Down here in Hobart he's known as Bull.

The fun of this thread aside, does history show that a, say, number 4 pick is really better than a number 6? I would have thought that there’s so much luck and talent development involved that it wouldn’t make much difference.

Pick 6 appears to be cursed

If we get get pick 6, I hope we also get pick 66.

Then it will picks 6 66.

The number of the beast.

With a stutter.

If we were to nab pick 7 from Gold Coast, we'd go to the draft with pick 4 and 7.

That’d really spruce the list up nicely heh Big Fella, big fella, big fella, big fella!!

Curse aside, it's a really interesting question.

As drafting and recruitment gets better over time, there should be less speculation further down the draft board.

But obviously luc, environment and development would play a big part in any drafting.

I think what it really comes down to is how much of a lock the selected player is.

At pick 1, there is often a standout, or maybe 2-3 in the convo.

At pick 50 there might be 20 players in the conversation.

So the likelihood of getting a good player may depend on when it starts opening up in any given year.

In some years there are a clear top 3, then the next 4 might be not as clear cut. In the case 4 v 6 is going to be much more influenced by drafting nouse and development.

If there is a clear top 4 though, then 4 v 6 is going is much more likely to be about skill/quality of the draftee.

So, if we get Jason Talylor on the Demonland podcast again this year, it would be interesting to know how he's enjoying the death ride!!

In all seriousness though, I do wounder how it's actually influenced our recruitment planning.  I'm guessing that knowing well have at worst a pick somewhere in the Range 4 - 8 will give the team some great options to seriously think about going forward.

As it stands

Out: Jackson, 44 (via bedford), 67

In: Jefferson, 4, 23

One of the main things this table shows me JTR is Jackson asides, how long it's been since the MFC has had a top 10 pick.  For the sustained sucess of the team, it's so important we get more in and thus what a gift from God this season Freo are having is for us in the circumstances.

So if we assume that we're getting pick 4, 5 or 6, are there half a dozen young prospects in and around that area of the draft that the draft watchers could put forward here?

I'm in that group that doesn't follow the fortunes of the prospects

We could of course use the pick as part of a bundle or work our way up to pick 2 or 3 or even using the pick for an established player

But young prospects?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
