A number of previously fancied players missed out entirely on being drafted this year. Draft analyst Ed Pascoe tweeted before the rookie draft that some of these included the likes of Sam Gilbey, Mitch Szybkowski, Adam D'Aloia, Kobe Ryan, Hudson O'Keefe and Luke Teal. None of these players were rookied. Pascoe noted that Sam Gilbey in particular has some “undeniable talent” despite having had a very unlucky year with injury.

I wonder whether some of these players might be included by the Demons as train on players for pre-season supplemental selection?

Surprised Liam Stocker didn’t get rookied.

Maybe something more to it than just footy IQ?

Oskar Baker was the talk that he was wanted by the WB.

There are some clubs with at least one rookie spot who will look at the players left and maybe recruit some of these.

Gilbeys recovering from a broken leg.

Maybe Saints wanted to see him training.

He will probably be added as supplemental player.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Szybkowski play for Casey as a local

Reckon the Dolphins will provide stiff competition for his services.

Also would imagine F-EB will be at Casey next year.

I guess it would be a hard ask bring a bloke with a fractured tibia all the way across the continent to test out whether he can play footy.

The Herald Sun’s on line page says this about him - “… he’s been on the radar for a while now and recruiters are aware of his class, composure and decision making across halfback – or through the midfield, where he’s played in spurts.”

It seems to me that this description covers one of the areas of our needs that we didn’t deal with in the recent trading and drafting.

Lachie Hunter says HI!!!

Really surprised this kid didn’t get drafted.  He looked good in national championships for Vic Country. He’s from Maffra and like to see him given a chance at Casey.  Youngsters with pace to break lines are a good asset for any team.  Dees will need to look for more midfield pace in the next draft imv.

I thought we had Salem, Bowey, Rivers, Brayshaw and a couple of Casey kids…..

The Pre-season Supplemental Selection is for a rookie and your last list position. Isn’t it better to get the best quality player for your list where your future wants are. Another versatile defender who could move into the midfield would be terrific.

The Hun has a list of nine players who were unlucky to miss selection:-

Mitch Szybkowski (Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country)

Sam Gilbey (Claremont WA)

Jed Hagan (East Fremantle/WA)

Ethan Phillips (Port Melbourne VFL)

Luke Teal (Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro)

Adam D’Aloia (Eagles/SA)

Nick Sadler (Sturt)

Oliver Northam (Geelong Falcons/Vic Country)

Harry Cole (Claremont/WA)

Always liked the ideas of Rivers in the midfield, big bodied & explosive

Would allow us to fit in a true line breaking half back too

Not really sure that we’ll be playing Hunter at half back next year but it’s nice to hear from him 😀

Hunter gets his spot on the Wing in the team I want playing.

Personally would like Rivers permanently at Half back, has courage and size where this year I would like Chandler and Bowey interchanging at Half Forward, utilising their kicking into the 50 as that was one huge weakness we need to address. Plenty of spots up for grabs this year.

Well it did mention midfield and that seems more urgent with forward  connection than half back of which we have Bowey and Salem and Ticers who all had poorer seasons in 2022 than 2021 largely due to injury returning too soon and ongoing fitness and Bowser eho should have come back in in Rounds 20 on when he rediscovered his form.

Sam Gilbey is worth a go. Classy half back flanker who can intercept and has a good kick (often takes the kick outs). Very much in the Salem mould and stands at 187cms, so decent height. Would need to add a few kgs to the frame though.

Had glandular fever this year and likely would've been drafted in the early second round if not for glandular and a broken leg. He could make it as an AFL half back flanker.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
