Our early season fixture certainly won't be helping our membership growth - 5 out of the first 10 games are interstate (I know everyone gets the gather round).

However, that is the same as the Lions, Freo, GC and Eagles, while the Crows, Power and Giants have only played interstate 4 times only the Swans have played interstate more than us! But compare that to all the other Victorian teams who've all played 3 each, we've been dealt an interesting early draw!

Its the opposite of what we usually get - often we get a glut of MCG games in the first half of the year followed by half a dozen road trips in the 2nd half of the year. 

After we play Port next week we have 10 Vic games (8 MCG, 1 Docklands, 1 Geelong) and 3 interstate games (1 NT, 1 Tas, 1 Syd) for the remainder of the year. I know what I'd rather have and I gather the FD would agree.

Win the flag this year and we could get 70k next year due to it being a flag year. 

We need multiple flags to attract a new gen of supporters and that'll be what pushes us into that next tier of club. 

For measure, the Saints have been in the doldrums recently but due to the spike in performance this year, I'm pretty sure they are at about 60,000 now too which is a smidge behind us. Whilst it looked like we were getting away from them in recent years, it shows that members fluctuate more than people think depending on where your club is at. Our rise is not a true reflection of growth, but rather a bunch of supporters jumping back on board post some dark years. 

All clubs have a slow growth of members due to the game growing which has been no different with us, as well as the normal bump that comes post flag. The real and lasting spike will be seen years after multiple flags. That's the challenge for us. 

 

No it's not as simple as that. Many other clubs have become powerhouses without sustained success.

In 2017 Richmond hadn’t won a premiership and hardly made finals in almost 40 years but their membership was over 70,000. The following year, after a premiership, they cracked 100,000, hardly sustained success.

Collingwood won one premiership between 1959 and 2009 but have been a powerhouse with a large supporter.

Carlton have almost 100,000 members but have been the poorest club in the league since 2000.

It's not just sustained success that builds a club, it's something more than that. And we certainly can't blame MCC members, most that I know have dual memberships and every Melbourne based club has a similar issue.

Eminently if we keep winning the next month leading up the Pies as the 3rd game at the G in a row. Inclusive of that is a day game that families can get to and buy memberships in person - yea that is still a thing for some reason.

I will be there to cheer on our flag winners on both teams…

Hopefully the team has set a goal for Port-Freo-Carl in the lead into Kings B’day. Everyone on the list will be striving for selection for the big day.

You have missed a vital point in the above Richmond and the pies had long periods where they won many games without winning the flag. While we were winning a handful of games a season they were wining 80-90 % of their games.

If you are contemplating buying membership at present why would buy one to get into the KB game it is already sold out.

It's not sold out, GA is now reserved seats only.

I’d love to see the KB game be a 1v2 encounter. Hopefully we keep winning up to the game. Might be the biggest attendance in a  H&A game in my 50 plus years of following the Dees. Could be 95k which is virtually a GF crowd.

At the end of last year 59,700 individual members led to the 66,484 number quoted by the Club and the AFL.

Only 42,250 members were over 18.

So over 29% of our members are juniors.

The 29% bodes well for our next generation of supporters as in 25 years many of these will multiply.

One thing for sure is its a good time to be a Melbourne supporter, we go into every game believing we are a good chance to win, play a good brand of football, generally get the result and are always in premiership contention.

Be interesting to compare that % to other clubs. If that’s at the higher end, we’re looking well placed for future growth.
