It is paywall

37. Melbourne – Sam Gilbey (Claremont/WA)

Defender, 187cm, 73kg

Jordan says: The Demons got their young forward earlier and now, given the star power and balance of its list, they can afford to take a slight risk. A risk because he is recovering from a broken leg, not because of his talent. Battled injury and Covid earlier in the year, too, but Gilbey has more class and composure than plenty of others in the draft. Reads the play so well in defence but, given the time he gives himself with ball in hand, has shown glimpses of the tall midfielder he could become.

A huge NO to anyone from W.A!!

32. Carlton – Kaleb Smith (East Fremantle)

31. St Kilda – Isaac Keeler (North Adelaide/SA)

30. Collingwood – Harry Barnett (West Adelaide/SA)

29. West Coast – Darcy Jones (Swan Districts/WA)

28. Collingwood – Coby Burgiel (Gippsland Power/Vic Country)

27. Hawthorn – Olli Hotton (Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro)

26. North Melbourne – Max Gruzewski (Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro)

25. Western Bulldogs – Jacob Konstanty (Gippsland Power/Vic Country)

24. Adelaide – Max Michalanney (Norwood/SA)

23. Essendon - Alwyn Davey (Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro)

22. West Coast – Lewis Hayes (Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro)

21. GWS – Charlie Clarke (Sandringham Dragons/Vic Metro)

This is the surprising one:

20. GWS – Elijah Hewett (Swan Districts/WA)

Gruzewski will be at GWS with one of their late teen picks.

Yeah absolutely

I mean Jetta, Rivers, Woey, Alan Johnson, Darren Bennett, Seecamp, Nicholson, Armstrong and numerous others all wanted to leave.

Might as well trade out JVR asap

Hewitt plz. Brayden George if he is gone by our pick.

@IvanBartul13 HS phantom is the second phantom that has Sydney taking your man Josh Weddle the pick after ours. You think we are a chance to pick him up in front of them?

i trained with weddle last night, hes quick and has good size but he needs to get stronger through his arms and probably legs to become more explosive, we were in runners on a soggy track due to cricket season and it was a genuine slip and slide but he didn't seem to be hitting the deck as often as others were, didnt get to see any of his arial/contested work or much of his tight contested stuff but his general kicking skill and composure with ball in hand was clear

Who are you going to get drafted by Turner?

Elijah Hewett plays like a Melbourne player as well

What does this mean anyway?

After a point against, he kicks out to the left to the pack and when going forward, he bombs it in to the left pocket boundary.

No small amount of Andy Brayshaw in this kid

Also comes from Hampton Rovers which is the Brayshaws' club.

Am a fan of the way Hewitt goes about his footy. He plays with confidence

... and a bit of swagger. I like that!

And then afterwards he likes to dine at a certain French Restaurant in Prahran.

Impressive determination to push through the pain barrier of decapitation. Kids made of tough stuff. Well, except his neck I guess.

I did feel the 183cm height measurement was generous

Have a feeling we will be surprised by who we take

Hopefully someone slips through

Just watched the highlights of Hewett and looks like a ready made recruit who has all the tools to become a good player in the near future, pace, good sense of awareness, size and has depth in his kicking.

The only thing I hate is he played in Collingwood colours in the West.

Also played in Brissy colours for Scotch College, Suns colours for community club Caversham and Tigers colours for WA, either way wouldn’t mind seeing him in the red and blue

There’s some character concerns stuff floating around, would you say that’s usually WA teams dropping a prospect back? Or is there something there?

I don’t know of anything and don’t think any AFL side falls for such character flaw rumours in order for local sides to have a player fall back.

The Jack Darling claims are a myth, he dropped back because he was poor in his draft year and struggled to deal with more experienced opponents.

He really didn’t interview well, for some clubs, at the combine. And I’m probably understating it.

The "for some clubs" part is interesting...

The ones not based in his home state perhaps?

So the top 6 seems mostly settled.

Let's assume Jefferson to the Eagles is legit.

To me, that means Ed Allan has already been picked, let's put him to Geelong for the sake of the argument (could easily be St Kilda or Dogs):

So we've got:

7. Hawthorn: ?
8. Geel: Allan
9. WC: Ginbey
10-12: St Kilda, Carl, WB ???
13: WC: Jefferson

So 4 picks and the following 5 guys: Clark, Tsatas, McKenzie, Hollands, Busslinger.

We might have some extra homework to do if one of those guys are available. JT would've done the work on McKenzie and Hollands and be pretty happy I reckon. Probably wouldn't need to do anything on Clark, you'd just take him.

Eagles need key forwards over key backs but it would be a surprise if they pass a local tall at ground zero of a rebuild. Saints, Dogs or Blues might've pounced on Busslinger anyway.

Tsatas would be interesting, a very non Melbourne player. Trade out of the pick for a team willing to pay up, then trade back in at 19 for Barnett or George? I can see that.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
