I thought I’d have a go at changing things up with a few positional changes for next season that might give us lift and hopefully be strong contenders again by using player’s strengths .

Brayshaw was all Australian squad at half back and Petty is the competitive beast we need at full forward.

Salem on the other wing to utilize his elite kicking to the forwards.

Turner May Bowey

Brayshaw Lever J.Smith

Langdon Oliver Salem

Gawn JVR    Bedford

Pickett Petty Fritsch

Grundy Viney Petracca

I/c - Chandler TMac Jordon Spargo

thought this was going to be a weridee thread

Ouch.  Turner will play next year but not likely in round 1

Ouch. Salem on the wing. Stays at half back

Ouch. Gawn as a half forward flank.

why is the All Australian ruckman demoted from his best position.  🤮🤮🤮

Turner is the ideal replacement for Petty if he goes forward, he looked great in the VFL grand final and after another preseason will be ready.

The resting  Ruck plays forward anyway so maybe alternate with Grundy in the forward pocket.

Salrms skills will be much needed on the wing to deliver pin point passes to the forwards and Brayshaw can play his role down back. ( maybe they could alternate)

I like the intent @DeeZee

Actually Salem was probably the worst offender in 2022 for delivery to the forwards. Really disappointed that he kicked high cloud-bursting forward entries with no pinpoint accuracy or intent. He’s one player we need fit and firing and hitting targets.

I like the idea of throwing some magnets around, although this seems a little top heavy for me.

Turner, Smith, May & Lever in particular.

I'd play Bowey on the wing over Salem, my feeling is Salem is a little lacking for leg speed.

I'm just really hopeful that JVR has a ripping pre-season and we can stop wondering about whether he should be picked.

Also think Grundy will be instrumental around clearances, he can shift bodies at will and Trac and Clarry should have a field day getting out of stoppages.

I like that idea, Bowey could make a great winger. ( Maybe Salem replaces Smith down back )

He is the biggest watch for me next year.. never ever looked like the player he has been.. needs to get as fit as he ever has been.

Curious... Is getting "as fit as he ever has been", the same as being less injured, and less 'coming back' from injury?

Salem, Premiership Half-Back. A man barely alive. (Ladies &) Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's best HBF. Salem will be that man. Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster."

Just needs a six million dollar knee cap

I understand what you mean but im saying regardless of injury he needs a big pre season, one of our most important players and has to bounce back from the interruptions he had his season. It wasn't sinister.

We desperately need Salem back to his best to free up Brayshaw on the ball.

Then the improvements needs to come from the bottom 6.

With Hunt gone (presumably), we need Bowie back and improved and Laurie to come on and show us the goods as to why we rated him a first rounder. I saw one game of his early this year and was very impressed but needs more consistency. Hoping a big preseason for these two will get them going for a big year.

Laurie has far better ball use than ANB, just needs to get the miles in his legs to complete the k’s that nibbler does.

Furthermore, JVR in from Rd 1.

Jordan and Sparrow hopefully have another level as well.

Confidence and accuracy in the front half was missing in 22. This is an old school approach to gaining improvement but it has been an issue for a while.

Perhaps move Salem or Bowey forward might help address this aspect. Is van Rooyen an accurate kick?

TMac, BB and Fitsch are good set shots though can be wayward in running play.

It would be nice if Petracca, Oliver and ANB can improve their goal kicking. Their mentality must influence their accuracy in front of goals as their field kicking is much better.

Spargo's kicking must be in the elite category even though he is not a long kick.

Pickett's kicking is mainly good too. Just want Spargo and Pickett to get it more times in a game...

Salem Fitness is crucial over the Preseason. He never got out of 2nd gear in ‘22.
Grundy/Gawn will be fascinating

The Club is seriously into Cadman, last I heard

But the biggest interest for me next year is how Bedford/Kossie are used in tandem

We need Bedford to be playing Senior Football. Very important Preseason for him

Here’s my guess based on what we know so far:

Petty May Hibberd

Salem Lever Bowey

Langdon Oliver Jordon

JVR  TMac Sparrow

Pickett Grundy Fritsch

Gawn Viney Petracca

I/c - Harmes Brayshaw Smith Chandler

Edit: saw the news of Bedford being traded.

As long as they don't play the 2 key forwards set up, it rarely worked. Gawn can play forward but they need him with 2 of van Rooyen, McDonald or B.Brown only going with one of them cost us the final against Brisbane.

B: Lever, May, Bowey

HB: Brayshaw, Petty, Salem

C: Langdon, Petracca, Jordon

HF: Pickett, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F: Fritsch, McDonald, Gawn

FOLL: Grundy, Oliver, Viney

IC: Harmes, Sparrow, Chandler, J.Smith

SUB: Spargo

Bowey weighs in at about 70kgs

It doesn't matter what skills he's got, that's small forward territory not long term down back fantasy.

Maybe he can wax with Spargo

With Bedford most likely gone then ANB or Sparrow takes his spot

Hoping JVR and disco are regulars next year.

This guy started talking to me about football last night and asked who I went for and told him, said he saw Gawn out running on the tan and had a little chat to him when he was walking. Asked  about Tracs leg, maxy apparently said yeah he was pretty shot and so were many others underdone but they’re all determined to get fixed and ready. He’s hungry than ever to do it all next year and that they really burned watching this years Gf. The fella said you can see it in Maxys eyes he wants another flag bad. Fingers crossed

I think we will all find that backs Salem Rivers Lever Bowey and J. Smith  will all have better 2023 than 2022 due to injury and form.

Forward wise Petty must be given a chance with Tmac and JVR as the talls and cameos ftom Gawnand Grundy.
Now that Toby is out Chandler deserves a chance as does any of the promising youngsters if they project themselves well in the Pre Season.

We need to play on and take the game on more.  If our forward line improves we will be a big chance again  for the Flag.

Rivers! Argh! I knew I forgot someone, I’d have him in for Smith.

People that write off BBBB and Tmac for Petty and JVR are dreaming. JVR will hopefully play, and Petty has all the tools, but one of BBBB and Tmac will almost certainly spearhead our attack again next year.

Gus to Wing / HF where he played about 85% of his time in our 2021 premiership year, had his best season (in terms of what he brought to the team / game style and W/Ls) and was the most damaging IMV.

Only played approx 15% of time across HB and even less time in the defensive 50 area in 2021 (ie; as a deep defender...most time spent in defense was shallow).

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
