Purcell and West 47 touches between them playing in the middle.  Only in their 2nd seasons with us.

With KP chipping in with 24 of her own, the mids just look awsome.

BOG would have to be Libby Birch, who held everything together against the top line forward line in the competition.  Hope Goldy gets back soon, because Libby can't do it all on her own.  Gillard looks fantastic and can kick long as well.

Very quiet games from Bannan and Zanker, so plenty of upside to be found there.

Maddie G was good help for Libby tonight.

Considering the game is around half the Length of mens AFL that is pretty impressive!

~68 minutes tonight

Hope Goldy

One of my 2 favourites, unfortunately we won't get to see Eliza Mac playing this year but good to see her with the group singing the song at the end.

...Goldy is very important coming out of defence with her pace and physicality, apparently out for 3, so 2 more to go.

...and '@DeeSpencer', I reckon Blaith will be a beauty when she gets her chance.

Great win by the girls. I thaught our composure was the biggest factor in the win.

Well played by the girls, some great contest and pressure and much improved by hand. When Tayla nailed that goal off one step from 40 I told my wife ‘I wish I could kick like that!’

West has improved heaps since last year too

I was thinking the same thing.

Her kicking was coming of a really low base, but has improved heaps.

She had good hands last season, but looks to have taken her handballs to another level, helped by how strong she is.

100%. Adelaide brought finals like pressure, especially in the first half and we absorbed it and kept getting our hands on the ball first.  Amazing first up game really.

I’m very glad we got through seemingly unscathed as the ground condition was pretty bad.

Looking at the pix of the surface before the game I thought it was an accident waiting to happen.

Thoughts and prayers to Channel 7 Adelaide, who tried mightly but failed to punt their team home.

That game was brutal. Adelaide are a tough side but we had their measure for much of the night. Eliza West has the build of Brian Wilson and plays a lot like him too. Liv Purcell and her were terrific in the middle.

Great to see Tayla used more aggressively up the ground, and getting more involved in ground-ball stuff too. ‘New’ midfield grunt looking good, should free up the better skilled players on the outside - Hanks, Mithen. This is the year?!

I think that was the best win in our history. And we’ve had some great wins. To beat the reigning premiers on their patch and to beat them at their own game is just phenomenal. I’m delighted with that performance.

It was painful wasn’t it! There were periods in the game where they were so busy praising Adelaide they missed calling Melbourne marks, goals and transition. The final highlights package also featured 4 Adelaide goals and only one MFC goal even though we won the game! Get stuffed Adelaide!

And the sad ‘uurghs’ of disappointment from one of the commentators when Zanker marked at the top of the square in the last was broadcast neutrality at its finest.

Totally agree. Apparently we have won more games than any other side and I’d rank that pretty close to the top of them all.

I haven’t seen the Bombers play this well for years!

As long as they don’t pose a threat to our girls. 👊🏼❤️💙

Tegan Cunningham playing in defence for the hawks. I thought she had retired for good. she was a real warrior for us

Sophie Locke - debuting for the Hawks, and their first goal kicker - was more emotional than expected during the week when told she’d be playing tonight. Reason being: her mum, who was a great supporter of hers in her quest to play in the AFLW, sadly passed away only two weeks ago after a long battle with cancer. For that reason, I hope the Hawks win this match. Oh and because I hate Essendon with an unholy passion… men, women, doesn’t matter, [censored] hate ‘em all

Late to the party...but HELL YEAH HOW'S THAT FOR A ROUND 1 WIN!

Thoughts:

- Great team effort. Every single player super focused and aware of what was needed. A resilient mental game.

- Lucky on that goal review, but NEVER FORGET that obvious goal that Hanks was absolutely robbed of out at Casey Fields.

- Persistence in the stoppages was off the charts given the high level of pressure. Simply refused to concede clearances several times. Gritty stuff.

- Pretty sure I saw Blaithin Mackin taking a really active part in the strategy chat during one of the breaks. Love that.

- Great game by Birch but please put away the "tough" afters. There's a time to fly the flag and that wasn't it.

- Win was all the more impressive given little contribution from Bannan and Zanker, two major X-factors and the absence of another in Goldie.

- Debutants were fairly seamlessly integrated, no mean feat given the circumstances.

Looking forward to seeing lots of Dees fans at the double header on Friday.

Don't forget the pre-game gushing over how good it will be when Adelaide play Port.

I was disappointed they played random music over the loud speakers, drowning out our team singing the song on the field.  Disrespectful, for mine.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
