So proud of our girls right now!

Cracking game and worth more than just the 4 points. ❤️💙

What a great win. I am super impressed with how far the skills have come on, especially handballs which was easily the weakest link in the girls game. To say it has improved out of sight is not hyperbole.

That was a great win and a fantastic start to the season. To beat the yardstick first up... well.. yeah im pumped.

Best start to the season possible, beating the reigning premiers in their home state, love it

We’re had some great wins over the journey but that’s one of the best. Superb performance

Rock solid defensively, magnificent contest work. And had the guts and belief to take the game on.

West was outstanding. This time last year she could barely kick the ball. Massive improvement

A 3 goal win away to the Crows. Unreal. They’ve been our buggy team

Everyone contributed. I’m super proud

Go Dees

Tahlia Gilard is a find

The engine room, mids and the contest was great.

By far the best team across the night! Every time Adelaide has some ascendancy we brought it back on our terms and eventually crushed their spirit. Could easily have been a 5+ plus win, bust couldn’t ask for a better start to the season! Well done Dees!

Okay so that last quarter gets a WOW! from me. Composure + Pressure. Paxie had a complete blinder. Go us.

Some wins mean a lot more than others. That was one of them. ❤️💙

Well done girls. Cheering loud for you tonight despite razor blades in my throat.

Tayla looking more dangerous through the middle. Midfielders brutal inside.

Crows clearly have some great individuals but couldn’t really get any cohesion in ball movement

Chaplin looks a nice depth defender. Strong body and neat skills.

Sammy Johnson is interesting, cracks in and works hard. Big mid, runs the wing, 2nd ever game and new club at 30! Good on her

Ivey seems a good worker, keen to see more. CHF always tricky at a new club

Cant wait to see Goldy back and hopefully Blaith too. The more we run the better we play

Looks like there's going to be two dominant Melbourne teams this September

Outstanding season opener, away from home and against the reigning champs.  Loved the tackling pressure, handball to advantage and composure of our defence. Fantastic stuff!

I have thought that Adelaide were too big, too strong and too talented for us. They are the benchmark. No more. To beat them Rnd 1 on their own deck must give the group so much belief for this season. Handy percentage to start the year too - 159%!

Ditto, just a brilliant win!

You beauty! Awesome win. Purcell and West enormous in the guts, Maddy Gay huge at HB, Birch, Gillard and Lampard excellent. Kate Hore could’ve kicked 4, goalkicking this week. Great game, ground it out against our nemesis away, without Daisy, Bannan or Zanker dominating! Huge win with upside! Perfect!
Looking forward to seeing them play live before our big swans game next week!

How good was purcell?

Very! Lived up to the hype when she came across from Geelong. West has improved heaps since last year too

Looked like Sammy Johnson was having a nice moment with her boyfriend/husband on the boundary line after she worked her way back to AFLW. Love that stuff.

God, this team has people you just love. Mithen is just a neat, everywhere player - reminds me of Nathan Brown circa 2000s.

Maddie Gay is immense and Libby Birch was just breathing fire back there. West, Purcell and Hanks are just hard at the footy with great balance.

And Tayla H doesn’t even celebrate when she kicks one from 40 off one step. Like Mark Waugh through covers - it’s a surprise if it doesn’t happen so why bother celebrating…

Oh, and Kate, please, consistent run in with momentum and don’t lean back when you kick it… you’ve got everything else!

@DeeSpencer

did I see you say Paxy was awful last year on the ball? She won a BnF and has been AA 5 out of her 6 years in the game. She is one of our only big bodies and is certainly needed on the ball at times even though she is getting past her prime

Purcell and West 47 touches between them playing in the middle.  Only in their 2nd seasons with us.

With KP chipping in with 24 of her own, the mids just look awsome.

BOG would have to be Libby Birch, who held everything together against the top line forward line in the competition.  Hope Goldy gets back soon, because Libby can't do it all on her own.  Gillard looks fantastic and can kick long as well.

Very quiet games from Bannan and Zanker, so plenty of upside to be found there.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
