Most important addition in last 24m and already showing having 2nd genuine wingman and one more elite i50 kick will do EONS for the fwd line And taking pressure off Langdon — 2 genuine wingers also means now JJ and Sparrow rotate through midfield to improve our rotation and ensure more explosiveness and horses for courses approach so the duality of this cannot be measured tangibly until about round 8-12 but if he is fit and plays the impact will be immense.

2 elite running, one good one great disp wingers whom BOTH are dangerous fwd and both run both ways is extremely exciting and offers as much as having TMac back, JVR playing & having Kossie play more of a blitzkrieg mid (5-6 CB att) and he and Fritta running back into 50 whilst others lead out  — so many good things happening now we just need some luck

It's the time of year to be positive of course, but let's not forget that Hunter's last two seasons were pretty ordinary. So much so that most dogs supporters were happy to see him go. Some sort of improvement will be welcomed but let's not go over the top!

Hence the preface re fitness 🤦‍♂️

This is a needs based acquisition, and Hunter has wanted out for 3 years. Already looks like a new man down at training and mark my words if he’s healthy you’re going to be feeling giddy despite your perniciousness!!!

Lachie is seeing this preseason as a convalescence of sorts & his i50 disposal is top 10 in the game. If you can’t see that this is a need then.. well I don’t really know how to proceed. But to reaffirm my viewpoint, not for the sake of verisimilitude but for the opinion that (again — IF for/healthy as the aforementioned post stated) he adds real value & possesses much that we lack in some of the more nuanced skills. Not saying he’s guaranteed to make the greatest impact but as far as potentially plugging gaps go, he’s our most astute recruit since May!!!

2 points.

Ive marked your words in the past, not hitching my wagon to your star any more.

"If he's healthy" is the nub of the issue, some believe his best is 2 years back.

Indeed, like Teenage Fanclub - they’re on the record as hating verisimilitude.

Interesting hearing him talk about his love for the tactical side of the game and then mentioning the the way Melbourne go about it which he wasn't use to. I'm really starting to look forward to him and Langdon as a weapon. Teams last year put a lot of work into negating EL, I can see oppo coaches being faced with a dilemma if Hunter returns to his best on the other wing.

The training reports and now the interviews with Lachie and him now saying that he is starting to feel at home at the club and that he loves the tactical game. I am finding myself a little more drawn to him as a Melbourne player  !!!!!!

Question for those that understand the role/s of modern wingers and terminology such as fat side wing / defensive wing etc.

My understanding was that:

1. We took the ball from defence (eg a kick in) on the defensive side (Brayshaw / Jordon side).  We were setup so that we may not move the ball quickly but it would be harder for teams to win the ball and generate repeat attacks (as predictable as it became).

2. Langdon always played on the far side wing due to his elite endurance.  This allowed for additional midfield rotations but meant that we didn't take into account the preferred kicking foot of him or the other winger/s.

If Hunter is in the team and able to perform close to his ability / potential, does that mean it won't be so clear cut in terms of the attacking side?  Will neither of them be a defensive winger?  Will Langdon still always be on the far side wing?

Great post however I would like you to re post it in the Game plans, tactics and all that jazz thread. I think your questions might get lost if left here. Similarly, I've been thinking about posting there regarding the "Tactical Sub" and who or what type of players might be of the most benefit. This might also come into the wingers conversation.

I hope we swap the wingers so they play with their preferred foot on the boundary side. Langdon kicked out on the full a lot last season on his left foot.

Which? You mean the ones re May when everyone was pouring on year 1? Lever? Or perhaps when I said Langdon would be our key to taking next step?

hahaha I’m sure there’s been a few wrong opinions but that’s why they’re opinions old mate…

but when having a crack — be specific at least you dolt! Rude to boot.😇

Great post.

And we saw in the Saints and Tigers praccy matches how significant, for many of the reasons you note above, hunter's recruitment will be.

I wonder if Hunter gets the MCC wing or will he and Ed change it up?

Definitely looking forward to his MFC debut and what he can contribute to the side.

I'm hoping for a mix: Original Model, with Ed owning the outer wing and Lachie to get the benefit of lots of 'Oh, well played, Number 12!' from the Members', but also New Model, changing it up to show the coach has adapted to be more proactive.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
