Are Dunstan, Munro, Baldi and Mitch White effectively Sauntner-ing our young mids?

Bedford, Chandler, Laurie even Woewodin are all good enough to get significant midfield minutes.

They’d get 25 disposals rather than 15ish. That’s 60% more chances to work on their disposal and decision making.

Fair enough to use the big bodies when we’re playing a top side, but against Preston’s collection of Northern footy league level players I don’t think we’re getting the right development here.

van Rooyen is a two-grabber.  He also dropped an easy chest mark from a perfect pass.  Dropping chest marks is my pet hate.  Infuriating.

He's a smart player with plenty of ability, but he's also a fair way off AFL level for mine.  That said, they named him as an emergency, so he may not be far off getting a taste.

Good point

Last week I mentioned that we are not challenging the younger players enough but there was strong disagreement by some

Even a half in a new position every second or third week would do no harm.

Winning the VFL flag is nice but it's not the real game

Marking anything out at Casey today is near on impossible with the breeze.

JVR’s clunked plenty of clean marks this year, and his contesting against an experienced afl defender in Cordy last week was good.

But for now Brown or even Weid are more likely to halve contests against good afl defenders due to their size and strength.

And Melk is in the other key forward role because he has a seasoned afl tank and 200 games of experience. His positioning and ability to find some uncontested disposals is just superior to a young fella.

But in both of those important aspects JVR is building. He’s not far away

If the emergencies from last night are playing at Casey today then surely Weeds could've played as well.

Against Footscray in slippery conditions he couldn't hold his marks.  At the other end Sam Darcy was one-grabbing contested marks in the same greasy conditions.

I like JVR and anybody is better than Weideman, but I don't consider him to be presently a strong mark, nor do I think he'll compete well one-on-one against AFL bodies.

He is however a very smart player at ground level and very athletic.

He's the only 194+cm key forward on our list with a leap.

Our key position forward stocks are presently so woeful I'm not against van Rooyen debuting soon.

Bedford in the act this quarter

That goal in the pocket by Bedford must have been about four or five defensive efforts in a row by him. Just pure guts and persistence when the game was already in the bag.

Great goal

Not sure how to judge VFL form but boy oh boy our future looks bright with some of the young kids coming though.

It was the top team belting the bottom team but there was plenty to be pleased about for Demon fans.

Some good selection headaches for next week.

Great performance by JVR but the occasion of next week might be too big to debut him just yet.

I don't get this argument that playing against the Pies in front of a big crowd is not the time to debut JVR. We are bringing him in with the full intention that he will be part of our finals campaign. Some players thrive in the big occasions, some don't. JVR would only have to perform 20% better than Weid last night and it makes our team better. The one thing that JVR shows is that he is a competitor.

For goodness’ sake! This is the twos! And against the bottom team!

Whenever we have tried Bedford or Chandler or even Dunstan in the firsts they have struggled. I hope as much as anyone that JVR will become a good player but at the moment, he is a boy and playing him against men would be a disaster.

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
